Not sure of the names from Belfry, but Brianna Fraley from EC, Leeza Mullins from Dorton, Macayla Potter and Lindsey Isner from Pikeville will be some players to watch for. Johns Creek probably has a couple of good players as well.

Well....in letcher county....all of the martha jane potter starting girls basketball line-up are all getting held back....all but 2 players....Sierra Kiser will proceed her way in to lcc athletic program while all other starters will be getting held back.....all except for Carlenia Gose who was held back this past year.....so this makes the martha jane potter lady cardinals a tough team to beat next season
Johns Creek's point guard is returning. Cameron Blackburn. She was the starting point guard last year, and will be agian next year. She's got awesome ball handeling skills. She'll be a 7th grader next year also.
*I think that Belfry will have a good group of girls this year they have 2 starters returing and alot of new girls commin*
CoUrTnEy WrIgHt... look out for this child from DORTON... she's quick as lightnin and will only b a sixth grader... IMO... she'll be a SAINT by the time she's an eigth grader... she doesn't have many teammates to work with but will accomplish at the greatest point guard at dorton in a while... she'll have 2 step up since the so-called "point guard" from last year is gone...

Assuming this to be the case, how can it be in the OVERALL
best interests of eighth graders to hold them back like this?
Basically, I would personally discount any success that
MJP has in eighth grade basketball this upcoming season
because it's a freshman team playing. My observations of kids being held back at the middle school level have not been all that positive. I think that middle school sports needs a
KHSAA type governing organization...and that AAU ball really
needs some oversight of some kind.
I WOULD NEVER HOLD MY CHILD BACK JUST TO PLAY BALL. I don't understand why anyone would want to.
ok...I thought if you were held back on your on terms...you couldn't play sports that year?
correct me if i'm wrong...
The MJP team is being held back. It happens all the time throughout the state. It is relatively new to Letcher Co. Administrators in that system fought it for years and fell pray to the athletic prodution line called consolidation.

Only in Pike County because 3 areas got tired of getting beat...............
How old is the Wright girl from Dorton?I have heard some good things on her!
Who cares, I wish the parents would hold THEIR children back, and tell SOME on the Pike BOE it stick their policy where the sun don't shine......
sour grapes sounds like to me!

Courtney is 12. She will be in the 6th grade this coming year. She has really good court awareness and plays excellent defense.
thanks, good luck to the ladycats this year! Also, what type of team will the ladycats have? Will they have any size orspeed? They seem to be pretty good each year.
The Private Wrote:How old is the Wright girl from Dorton?I have heard some good things on her!

she'll be 12 on July 11... she's good...
the cats should be a fast paced team nxt year considering they have little size besides taylor johnson...
On the being held back part...I guess it's good in it's own ways...but I still don't think it's right....
Elkhorn will be the team 2 beat
Cause they have a good big girl down low a great P.G
Leah Vanhoose-Paintsville. Scored over 40 points in a middle school tournament game, and now getting a double double at the high school level. she'll be a memorable player for years to come
Jacklyn. #11 from Belfry.

she can handle the ball fast and shoot
Martin Co. Cardinals have some GREAT 7th graders coming up. They won the Mountain Middle School Conference.
They have the Porter girl along with Newsome, Jude and Burkett. I believe these girls will be freshman when Booth is a Jr.
Courtney from dorton is awsome she will be great dorton should go all the way next season!!!!!!!!!!

If the kids were in the 8th grade last year, and get held back, they are not eligible for a second 8th grade year of sports.
Leah VanHoose from Paintsville.
Lindsey Isner will be a solid high school player.

They can play middle school if their school board allows it. This is determined by each individual school board.

They can not play at the high school level if they hold themselves back. Also, their high shcool eligibility has begun with they are promoted to ninth grade and they would not be able to play their senior year.

Bylaw 4. Enrollment

Sec. 1) Maximum Number of Semesters
a) Students promoted from grade eight (8) to grade nine (9) shall
have four (4) consecutive calendar years of eligibility from the
date of first such promotion by the school provided the student
is eligible according to this and all other Association bylaws.
Such eligibility shall conclude with the completion of the spring
sports season following the fourth year.
b) The Commissioner or Board of Control through the Due Process
Procedure, may grant additional eligibility in the case where is
has been documented by the attending physician, Principal and
Superintendent that severe illness or injury has prevented the
student from receiving necessary education services and the
right to an education has therefore been impacted rather than
simply the loss of athletic privilege. Such grant of eligibility may
only be made in the cases in which the student-athlete would
remain eligible by all other Association bylaws. Nothing about
this provision shall include additional eligibility strictly for loss
of participation due to sports related injuries.
c) No student having been enrolled in the fourth (4th) grade
or in any grade through twelfth (12th) shall be eligible for
interscholastic athletics at the high school level (grades 9
through 12) for more than a total of one (1) year in each grade
and applicable eligibility shall begin in the first year enrolled
in that grade. Students repeating a grade for any reason are
ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics at the high
school level (grades 9 through 12) during the second year in
that grade. The penalty for violation of this rule shall be the loss
of one of the four years of eligibility after being promoted from
grade nine (9). Policies regarding the participation of repeating
students at the levels of play below high school interscholastic
athletics shall be determined by the school council pursuant to
KRS 160.345 (2) (i).

Case BL-4-3- May students have more than four years
(eight (8) semesters) of eligibility in order to participate
in interscholastic competition after being promoted
from grade eight(8)?
No, a student is eligible only for the first four consecutive years
(eight (8) semesters) after initial promotion from grade eight (8),
even if they do not participate in athletics during one or more
of those years.

Case BL-4-5 – May a student who is repeating a grade
(below grade nine) play interscholastic sports for the
middle school / junior high school?
That determination is left to the discretion of the local school
based decision-making body for the school in accordance with
adopted SBDM policies. It has been determined and reaffirmed
by the Department of Education that the Association’s
jurisdiction is presently limited to the member high schools
of the Association and not the related middle or junior high
schools. However, those students who are repeating a grade
at any level are prevented in all situations from representing a
KHSAA member school in a scrimmage or contest at any level
(grades 9-12) during the year being repeated whether or not
that student played interscholastic sports at any level during the
first year in the grade.

Case BL-4-18- Do parents have options relative to holding
a student back in grade eight?
No, Kentucky Department of Education regulations place the
responsibility for promotion or retention of a student on school
personnel and not parents. Once “promoted” from the eighth
grade, a student’s four consecutive calendar year (8 semesters)
athletic eligibility period begins.
Verification as to the retention/promotino decision is the
responsibility of school personnel and may include such
things as STI records or other written documentation. Such
documentation should always be available for review until the
student graduates.
Big Grin Hey Courtney is awsome and I didn't no that she was only in 5th grade
