Jose Mourinho is likely to be very happy that the final international break until March is out of the way and he can now concentrate on setting Chelsea up for a successful season which they have already laid solid foundations for. The Portuguese manager would also have been satisfied with the way Iberian neighbours Spain dealt with both Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, who were allowed to withdraw from the national squad, although there are no signs that the disagreement with Spanish national manager Vicente Del Bosque is going to end. There won't be much concern about that for the next few months as Chelsea can focus completely on club matters as we get closer to the hectic festive period that the players dislike, but the fans love. With a 4 point lead at the top of the Premier League, Chelsea players are probably more excited about being able to take a stranglehold of the chase for the title, beginning by improving their 5-0-0 record at Stamford Bridge where the Blues have scored 13 goals and conceded 3.

The rows between clubs and countries during international breaks extended to one between the Republic of Ireland and Everton this week as Roy Keane implied Everton encourage their Irish players to avoid playing for the national side. While Roberto Martinez is expected to respond to those claims later in the week, the immediate concern for Everton will be to continue moving up the Premier League table after a disappointing start to the season. The side went into the international break in lowly 10th place in the Premier League table, although the goal of breaking into the top four and a Champions League place is well within the grasp of Everton. It looks like being an open race for those positions, but that does mean winning games like this at Goodison Park where Everton have an unsatisfactory 1-2-2 record, scoring 10 goals but conceding 11. Everton are unbeaten in their last 6 games in all competitions since their unfortunate 2-1 loss at Manchester United, but half of those games have ended in draws. How many West Ham United fans still want to see Sam Allardyce removed as manager? It looked almost certain that Allardyce would leave the club in the summer for not playing the 'West Ham way', while he was a favourite in the 'Sack Race' going into the season, but the former Bolton Wanderers manager has been winning plaudits this season. After being told by the owners to improve the attacking aspect of West Ham United performances, the arrival of Teddy Sheringham as a Coach has certainly helped Sam Allardyce in producing those. The positive performances have also produced positive results and West Ham United surprisingly sit in 4th place in the Premier League with 18 points under their belt. The Hammers have a 2-2-1 away record this season, scoring 11 goals and conceding 8. West Ham United are unbeaten in their last 5 games, but they have drawn back to back Premier League games against Stoke City and Aston Villa. They have recovered from their sole loss on their travels at Manchester United by beating Burnley 1-3 at Turf Moor before West Ham fought back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the Brittania Stadium.

Sunderland’s results on the road have been somewhat of a mixed bag with defeats at QPR and Southampton whilst holding West Brom and Burnley to draws along with the win at Crystal Palace.

However, that win at Old Trafford has been their only away win of the season and after that they have gone W0 D2 L2 away from home. Their best bet to score will no doubt be Wilfried Bony.

Walters may not be the most prolific of strikers but he has had a fairly good career at Stoke and has become one of their top players. The Irishman has made seven appearances in the forward position for Stoke so far this season and has scored two goals. He has managed to create six chances for his team mates and one of these resulted in an assist for him. One area where Walters is usually quite strong is in his duels. This season, he has won three of the four tackles he has attempted and successfully taken on opponents six times from nine attempts. However, most likely due to his height, he has only won 21 of his 48 aerial duels and this brings his overall duel success percentage down to 50%. He can be a threat for Stoke and Burnley’s weak defence will have to look out for him.

Choosing a key player for Burnley is never easy but Ings, despite his form, is one of their better players and the one who has the potential to upset Stoke on Saturday. He has made eight appearances for Burnley this season and has scored one goal for the club. According to Squawka.com, he has only managed to get 28% of his 18 shots on target and despite creating seven chances for his team mates, he has yet to create an assist. He does have a 75% passing accuracy but in contrast with Walters, Ings has only been successful in 32% of his overall duels. Ings’ problems up front have to be put in context with Burnley’s attacking problems. If he can improve his form starting with Stoke this Saturday, then there is no reason the rest of the team can’t do the same.

Arsenal vs Manchester United

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 5 home games in all competitions, but they have drawn 3 of those games, and only ended a run of 3 consecutive home League draws when they scored late goals to beat Burnley 3-0.

Louis Van Gaal has changed his mind about being judged in three months which he asked for when coming in as Manchester United manager and now requests he needs three years to turn the fortunes of the club. Like Arsene Wenger, Van Gaal didn't strengthen a defence that lost experienced faces in the summer and it has been problems in that area of the pitch that have prevented Manchester United from putting together a consistent run of results. At the start of the weekend, Manchester United are 8th in the Premier League table and they are 2 points behind West Ham United in the top four, which remains the only reasonable target for Van Gaal this season. Getting back into the Champions League is imperative for a club of this size, but that means improving on a 0-3-2 away record which has seen Manchester United score 6 goals, but concede 9. Manchester United have only lost 1 of their last 6 games, but they needed to end a run of 3 games without a win by beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Old Trafford prior to the two week break. Away from home has been a real problem for Manchester United as they have now failed to win any of their last 9 on their travels in all competitions and have lost half of their 6 away games this season.

However, it may not be easy cause a couple of very important players may miss this game. Giovani dos Santos is out, captain Bruno Soriano is very doubtful. Musacchio, Perez and Jokic are long-term injuries.

They are by far the most inefficient team in the entire league, which is quite odd given the individual quality of this team. In the last round they drew with Almeria 0-0, although they had a player more on the pitch for almost the complete second half. On top of it, midfielder Rochina has injured and he will skip this match, while stopper Murillo is questionable.

Cordoba is not ready to participate among the best clubs in the country and maybe they will get relegated really quick back to Segunda, while in the same time Villarreal will again be fighting for the top places and a position at least in the Europa League next season. Cordoba was one of the really nice surprises in Segunda last season, as no one expected them to be among the clubs that will be fighting for the promotion, so what to talk about the fact that they had managed to win the playoffs, beating the favorite Las Palmas and getting a place in the Primera Division for this season, which was without any question a huge success for the club. But in the summer they did not had the needed money to invest in good players and to be on a good level for the new season, as the difference between Segunda and Primera is huge and you just cannot compete with the same players you played with a season ago in the lower league. And the results proves that the class of the club and the players does not look good enough to be participating in the top flight in Spain, as Cordoba remains the only club who is yet to win a single match in the league after the first twelve rounds, having drew a whole seven times so far (0-7-5), but with those just seven points collected, they are at the rock bottom of the table and I cannot see them getting out of this position anytime soon, at least with this display.

Valencia is around the top of the standings which was quite expected because of the strength of this team, but somehow it seems that are not as good as they used to be at the beginning of the season which is backed up with the results. Heavy defeat by Deportivo could be classified as a bad day, but shortly afterwards they for the first time missed to win at home and drew with Bilbao 0-0, and then in the last round they were defeated in the derby by Levante by 2-1. It is too bad that they hadn’t won that match, because they would be even closer to Barcelona which would additionally motivate them.They shouldn’t allow to receive the second goal just a minute after they equalised the result, which in fact cost them the defeat. The first striker Alcacer didn’t play, which was certainly a major handicap, but Parejo had returned and he even scored a goal after he came off the bench in the second half. Alcacer should be ready now, although it is not certain whether he will start the match or not. Parejo should therefore also be a starter, while the rest of the team should stay the same.

The crisis is a past tense in Barcelona, and this team is now again in a victorious series. They had a brief critical period when they were defeated by Real, which Celta used that and took points from the Nou Camp. They missed many chances in that match and we cannot say that they played poorly, but then they started again to win and are currently in a series of four victories. Two away victories come from the Champions League where they defeated Ajax and Apoel, who were objectively much weaker teams. In La Lige they had barely defeated Almeria at home, but then have overrun Seville in the last round by 5-1.Messi had marked that match with three goals and a new record in La Lige, and then in Cyprus on Tuesday have scored three new ones against Apoel, which made him the top scorer in the history of the Champions League. So, Messi is again in a great shape and when it is so then Barcelona also play well. Suarez is better and better so there is no winter in the attack. It is occasionally squeaking in defence, although are still a team with the least received goals in the league. The great news is that Iniesta has recovered who will join the team in Valencia.

Leicester were beaten 3-2 at QPR on Saturday and they dropped down to the bottom of the table for the first time this season. It’s now eight league games without a win and six of those matches ended in defeat alongside draws at home to fellow strugglers Burnley and Sunderland. The two goals they scored at Loftus Road at the weekend ended a run of five without finding the net but you have to go back to the early stages of the season to find the positives. Leicester took eight points from their first five matches including a 5-3 home win over Manchester United and draws at home to Everton (2-2) and Arsenal (1-1). Another former Inter player is the key man for the Foxes. Esteban Cambiasso will be vital if Leicester are to succeed in the battle for the midfield with Liverpool. The signing of the Argentine was a huge coup for Leicester because of his huge reputation, ability , and experience. Cambiasso can help Leicester against Liverpool’s string midfield. The former Inter man has averaged three interceptions per 90 minutes, two clearances per 90 minutes, has completed 76% of his passes, and has not made a single defensive error all season. The experience of the Argentine could be vital for the foxes in this match.

Liverpool edged out Stoke City at Anfield on Saturday, a 1-0 win ending their own baron sequence of six games without victory (all competitions). They are still no higher than mid table and their away record in the Premier League comprises of two wins and four defeats. When visiting the clubs who are quite likely to be involved in the relegation battle with Leicester, Liverpool have won 3-2 at QPR and lost 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Five of their six road trips have seen backers of over 2.5 goals collect with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle bucking the trend.Liverpool have been inconsistent and unpredictable this season. They have not been convincing all season and, without Daniel Sturridge, have no star goalscorers. That said, Leicester have really struggled and it is tough to see them winning this one. While I could see this finishing level, I’m going to go with a Liverpool win to make it two wins on the bounce for Liverpool.

Manchester United vs Stoke City

Manchester United go into their second home game in four days with a renewed sense of self-belief and confidence following an excellent win against Hull City, and Tuesday’s visit of Stoke City should see a continuation of the great form that has seen Louis van Gaal’s side win their last three Premier League games. Stoke will arrive at Old Trafford fresh from a disappointing defeat at Anfield where they were arguably the better side against Liverpool. Make no mistake, Stoke will pose a significant counter-attacking threat and have already won in Manchester this season; beating Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad in August. Much has been made of the extensive injury problems at Manchester United this season, but Stoke will have problems of their own going in to the game on Tuesday night. Glen Whelan and Steve Sidwell will both miss the game following injuries they picked up at Anfield, leaving them a little stretched in terms of midfield options. Going forward they will try to once again exploit the pace of former United player Mame Biram Diouf, but the absence of Victor Moses weakens their counter-attacking threat that has won them praise in previous weeks.

One man who will be available for Stoke is Bojan Krkic. After a slow start to life in England he has really found his feet in recent weeks, and if Stoke are to get anything from the match you would expect it to come through the ex-Barcelona forward. He operates in that number 10 role for Stoke and against Liverpool he was arguably the best player on the pitch. He finds pockets of space between the midfield and defence and in a counter-attacking team like Stoke his quick thinking and ability to pick out dangerous passes makes him their most significant threat. The passes in yellow indicate the key passes he made in the game against Liverpool on Saturday and they are all from areas where it is difficult to pick him up. In a game where United will be expected to dominate proceedings like they did against Hull City, Stoke may only get one or two moments in and around the United penalty area and Bojan is exactly the player they need on the ball because he is capable of unlocking any defence and creating chances for those around him. He is also a source of goals himself, either in the box or from range. He’s already scored at White Hart Lane and came very close on a number of occasions against Liverpool. While they will try and play through the little Spaniard, the pace of Diouf and the trickery of Arnautovic cannot be ignored. In essence, Stoke won’t mind United dominating possession like they did against Hull City because this side has been built to thrive on the counter attack and will pose a threat if not dealt with correctly by Manchester United.

Arsenal FC have been wildly unpredictable this season. Just as it looks like they are in full crisis mode, they string together impressive results. And just as it looks like they are in top form, they disappoint with a limp effort. This teeter-totter play will have the stress levels of thousands of Gunner fans soaring, and one wonders if they won’t suffer another letdown after a strong week. While they did fall to Manchester United for their first PL home defeat in their last 24 matches, they admittedly played rather well in that match and arguably should’ve taken a share of the points. But those woes have been left behind as unlikely hero Yaya Sanogo scored his first competitive goal for Arsenal in their 2:0 Champions League triumph over Borussia Dortmund, and last weekend saw Danny Welbeck get back on track against West Brom as his lone-goal match winner sealed all 3 points for the North Londoners. Now they enter the midweek in 6th place with a chance to further propel themselves up the table. However, they come up against a very good Southampton team that has already eliminated the hosts from the Capital One Cup this season, and while we suspect the tables will be turned here in league action, the going won’t be easy for Arsene Wenger and his men. But it must be noted that in Laurent Koscielny’s first game back from injury, they earned their 4th clean sheet of the season.

A limp 1:1 draw with Aston Villa was a bit disappointing considering the Villains were without arguably their top 3 players as well as their top 3 centre-backs. They followed that up last time out with a 0:3 defeat at home to Manchester City. They conceded more goals in that match than they had all season at the St. Mary’s Stadium, and confidence will surely have taken a hit as the players question whether they are legitimate top 5 contenders or not. However, they still sit in 3rd place and are very much a threat to the traditional top clubs. They have already knocked Arsenal out of the Capital One Cup this season behind a blistering rocket of a goal from breakout right-back Nathaniel Clyne. The Englishman should be able to give the Gunners problems down the flank, especially considering both Arsenal left-backs are dealing with knocks and likely won’t be at 100%. Nevertheless, striker Graziano Pelle has cooled off a bit since a patch of torrid form, and considering the fact that they will be facing a revenge-minded Arsenal side, the Saints may not have enough firepower to avoid their second consecutive defeat.

Incredible Brazilian youth Talisca has been on an insane pace this season scoring 9 goals already over 14 games in all competitions, including the winner in their only UCL win against Monaco. Benfica will need to want this win despite the meaningless implications if they are to come out on top of a deadly Leverkusen team.

Burnley FC have completely reversed their fortunes from looking like the worst team in the English top-flight to suddenly playing as if their lives depended on it. The return from injury of last year’s Championship Player of the Year Danny Ings has given this team renewed vigor and some much-needed attacking quality. The young Englishman has now scored 3 goals and provided an assist in his last 4 appearances for the club, but until Sam Vokes can get back from his lengthy injury spell on the sidelines, the offense is clearly relying too heavily upon one player. This was evident last time out in their 0:2 shutout against Queens Park Rangers, who have conceded the most goals in the Premier League this season. The Clarets posted 15 total shots in that match, but with just 3 going on target, their finishing is a glaring problem headed into the weekend. Coming up against a team that will be determined to get back to winning ways, Burnley are likely to find themselves stuck in the relegation zone for at least one more week.

If it weren’t for some horrendous finishing and a few moments of class from Robin van Persie, points were available. But so goes the unforgivable nature of football and the up-and-down madness of the Premier League, and the visitors must have short memories and storm Turf Moor in a very winnable game. Considering Graziano Pelle’s excellent display last time out saw him return to the score sheet, we fancy the Saints to be rewarded this time for a solid display on the road.

In the Tigers’ return to the top-flight last season, the Blues claimed both matches 2:0, and the hosts’ performance over the midweek serves to reinforce the likelihood of their victory this weekend. Against a solid Sporting Lisbon team in the Champions League, Chelsea steamrolled through the Portuguese club to a comfortable 3:1 win, with Andre Schurrle looking particularly impressive and drawing praise from his manager as a result. Furthermore, Diego Costa, John Terry, and Branislav Ivanovic are all expected back in the starting lineup, and this match could turn into another multiple-goal victory for the powerful hosts.

He will be looked to as the difference-maker this Saturday for an attack that has managed to score just 2 goals in their last 7 PL outings, though even if he can get on the score sheet, keeping Chelsea’s high-flying offense out of their own net on a few occasions will be a near-impossible task. Diame and Snodgrass continue to be absent but are Bruce’s only injury concerns.
