Heard that Sean Damron would be the boys head coach at June Buchanan School next year. Said he had already recruited several players to the school from surrounding counties. Sean will do an excellent job if this is really true.
I know for a fact they are starting the program back next year, not sure about anything else though.
Dont know where you are getting your info, but Sean wont be at JBS. JBS has already hired a coach for next yr. He used to coach at Garrett Christian, but i cant remember his name. Sean would do a good job, but that wont happen. He may however be at one of the county gradeschools as a head coach from what i have heard. So, you can drop the rumor of him recruiting kids over there.
Drop the rumor. You have to recruit in order to build a team. They dont have the numbers at JBS to have a varsity high school team do they? Well I heard from a pretty reliable source that Damron would be the man running the program at JBS. Several kids from Perry, Hazard, Knott, Floyd, and other counties are coming. Kids that are Freshmen and Sophomores. No older transfers. Hope to see JBS get things going again soon.
I would love to see them get the program going again as well. I had heard from someone that they were going to have a varsity team for this past season but, that obviously did not happen.
i would say that you may want to call JBS and tell them about it since they already hired a coach. He may want to know that himself.hahahahaha. Not sure what your motive is for this rumor , but i can tell you it wont happen......

How do private schools with no state funding usually stay afloat?

JBS charges tuition and has donors from all over the country with ALC degrees.
My question to you is why anyone would NOT want to see a school give their students a chance to play basketball?!

It's illegal to recruit in high school basketball in KY. But you already knew that. Its really obvious if you have kids from several different counties playing for them next year.

JBS does charge tuition..however they also gave scholarship money to basketball players they wanted that they did not have. (old news) NOW, they do not have enough students paying tution to keep the school running..pay teachers..provide lunch.. etc. So technically I guess they are out of fairy dust..
I don't just want their basketball program to go under..I want the entire school to close.
JBS has zero opportunity for social interaction, their teachers are teachers who could not get hired in the public school system, and they do take students from the Knott feeder system..not just athletics..academics..numbers..etc.
I despise the private school system. period..which is pretty well known.
ALSO, I hate the way parents complain that their students cannot participate in our gradeschool tournements, junior athletic feeder programs, etc. ... Hazard doesn't participate in the Perry County grade school tourney. It's ridiculous.
THEN, if JBS takes a special education student from the county..we are required to pay for that said student's accomodations..
I apologize if it offends anyone, but I think it is ridiculous..especially when Knott County has some of the highest test scores in the state.
Furthermore, if a student at JBS would like to participate in athletics..they should probably consider attending the public school in the county they are from.. Knott, Perry, Letcher, etc.
I think JBS has an excellent school. Who needs all the social interactions and drama that the kids have to go through on a daily basis at the public schools? I say if you can afford to go to JBS, go for it. Socialism is highly over rated.

Do you honestly think students at JBS do not have drama between students/teachers? That happens at any school.. the only difference is at a larger school you can find other friends or stay away from those people..at a smaller school that is almost impossible.

They have a tight budget but they make it because of rich donors, tuition, and the fact that pretty much every job at the school that doesn't require a teaching degree is paid for by Uncle Sam via Alice Lloyd's "Work Study" program.
I won't argue with you on the social interaction thing too much...
but some kids would definitely benefit from smaller classes.
I worked at Camp Nathanael and there were a lot of Christian School kids, private school kids, and home school kids that came through....
it isn't for everybody lol

I think it would be cool if Cameron Justice and Braxton Beverly went to JBS. That would be pretty interesting. It will never happen. But would be interesting.
Maybe they will hire Mr. Allen back he can get things moving in the right direction, maybe he can get his Rowdy connection Denny Fugate to take the Job and they can recruit an allstar Team. What about the Stepp's? What role are they going to have?
I don't see the Stepp's having a major role because to my knowledge there are no little Stepp's left to play

For the past 3 years KCC's basketball teams have been comprised of kids from JBS. The parents who have chosen JBS for their children are exercising their right. As for them complaining about their children not being allowed to participate in the county school sports, they pay school taxes and should have some of their money go toward their child's county sports program. As for KCC having the highest scores in the state Ha Ha. Also look at the bias against certain kids being allowed to play sports within thier own schools in Knott Co. It is who you are and what part of the county you live in. Parents are fed up with this bias and if Knott Co wants to regain these students, let them treat all kids the same. If your child does not attend JBS then you really don't know what happens there. You are either making it up or are listening to someone who also hates JBS.
Spoke to Sean Damron a couple days ago over at the Sportsplex and he said he was only helping out with coaching and recruiting for JBS. Said a few people would be scratching thier heads shortly. Several kids will be moving near Pippa Passes not from just all over Eastern Kentucky, but from all over North America and maybe even Europeans. Said they hoped to make JBS like University Heights used to be. Said they have the funding from Private Donors already. Good luck JBS.

Just for clarity: Alot of retired teachers work there so obviously they were able to work in the public school system. As far as complaining about participating in the county tournaments the only thing wrong with that is that students are being punished and those same student's parents pay school taxes, why shouldn't they be allowed to play. Fact: since JBS does not have a special education program no money has been taken from you or anyone to fund it. Everyone has the right to like or dislike public/private school however at least tell the truth about it and let people decide for themselves.

Unfortunately, my parents forced me to attend JBS for a couple years. They realized the teachers were horrible..and the mistake they had made and I transferred back to the public school system, so I feel as though I have a pretty good idea.

Our feeder schools also lead the state. We are looking at almost 100% proficiency.
I don't think Knott County has to "Regain" students..they have them all?

I hear his son will be, but not to JBS.
