Here's my idea for how the college football post-season should be structured.

The bowl system for non-championship contending teams would stay the same as it is now, with each team receiving bids based on their final standing in their conference.

The top 8 BCS teams will be placed in a bowl playoff bracket with the bowls being the top 6 bowl games that rotate between quarterfinal and semi-final games each year culminating in the BCS National Championship game. The bowls will consist of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the Fed-Ex Orange Bowl, the Nokia Sugar Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, and the Capital One Bowl. This format would allow similar amounts of teams to compete in the college bowl season while also alleviating the controversy over the sport. Each bowl would have the chance to showcase better games and deeper rounds as the cycle goes through. Traditional match-ups may still be upheld as long as the teams qualify for the 8 team playoff and the seeding would not be overly compromised. This would allow for continuing tradition in an evolved format for choosing a National Champion.
