Holmes vs. Central updates

The championship game of the 92nd Boysâ Sweet Sixteen between Holmes (35-2) and Central (19-14) will tip off around 8:12 p.m. in Rupp Arena.

Holmes will be shooting for its first state basketball title. Central will be seeking its third championship. It won the title in 1969 and 1974.

The pre-game hoopla is under way. We’ve had the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” and the national anthem. The lights have been turned down, video highlights of the tournament are being shown on the jumbotrons, and the teams are lined up at opposite ends of the court. It’s an atmosphere the players dream about taking part in.

Central has edged ahead 13-7 as Holmes continues to struggle shooting. The Bulldogs are 3-for-15 (1-for-10 on threes). Holmes has the advantage on the inside, but has resigned to shoot primarily from the outside

Upset in the making? It’s only one quarter old, but this title game is already closer than a lot of people figured it could be. Central leads 13-7. Five different guys have scored for the Yellowjackets, who are out-rebounding Holmes 13-7. Holmes is settling for long-range shots, and it’s 1-for-11 on three-pointers. It’s 2-for-5 on two-pointers.
