Harlan County vs. Clay County Updates
#1
Game will tip shortly after the conclusion of the Corbin/Knox Central tilt.

Some Keys to the Game:

Harlan County--
Win the boards and limit Clay County's second chance points; stay out of foul trouble; what contributions do you get from Noah & Huff's supporting cast; managing expectations as the favorite and not tightening up if things get close;

Clay County--
Shooting percentage(s) and shot selection; win the rebounding battle; limit turnovers and unforced errors; can your depth get into Harlan County's legs; playing with nothing to lose as the underdog while controlling emotions and not getting too high or too low;

Roughly 25 minutes from tip in this one.

Imagine that there's going to be a fairly nice crowd for this one. Clay County folks are glad to be back after Gray's disastrous tenure. Harlan County fans watching Noah's senior season. A lot of Corbin fans sticking around to see who they'll get in the final. A lot of casual fans looking on to see the Jones brothers match-up. If not for the Kentucky-Tennessee game or both of the Laurel schools already being eliminated, I imagine you'd see an even bigger contingent, but still looks like a nice crowd.

WYMT is streaming the game online and a handful of the local radio stations are also broadcasting. About to go to the floor for starting lineups.

Harlan County:
Trent Noah (Sr.)
Maddox Huff (Sr.)
Reggie Cottrell (So.)
Jaycee Carter (Jr.)
Caleb Johnson (Sr.)

Clay County:
Hayden Harris (Sr.)
Jerrod Roark (Jr.)
Elijah Bundy (Sr.)
Adon Grubb (Fr.)
Ethan Jackson (Jr.)

5-4, Harlan County lead after a Maddox 3 and Noah dunk. Bundy has all four points for Clay County.

5-4, Harlan County leads. Bundy picks up his second foul. Wagers checking in for Clay County. The Tigers jumped out 4-0 and had a lot of momentum, but Harlan County weathered it well and has settled in since.

Harlan County's Johnson with a single-leg takedown of Clay's Harris.

Johnson is given his 2nd personal. I think Clay is a little deeper than the Bears, so this is something to monitor. I've seen Harlan County a couple of times, but they don't go to their bench very often.

7-4 with 4:08 left in Q1 when Johnson went out. Clay County cuts it to 7-6 and Roark picks up a technical after he scores a basket.

A lot of whistles after the kerfuffle-- expect that to continue for awhile as both teams are playing with a lot of emotion and getting after one another.

It's now 8-6 with 3:44 remaining in Q1.

10-9, Harlan Co. after Grubb converts an and-one.

Teams trade turnovers and it's Tigers ball with 1:08 remaining in Q1. Harris at the line for two, Tigers trail 12-9.

14-11, Black Bears lead after Q1. They have possession.

14 all after Harris converts an and-one. 7:51 remains in Q2.

21-18, Clay leads and has possession after a Roark three.

24-18, Clay County after a Harris three.

24-21 after Noah answers.

26-21, Clay County leads with 4:26 remaining in Q1.

Tigers getting a balanced effort from Harris, Roark, Grubb, Bundy and company. It's been mostly Noah for the Black Bears. Quiet night for Maddox Huff outside of an early three.

29-21, Clay leads after a Roark three.

29-24, Clay leads after Maddox Huff hits another three.

Cottrell gets the and-one on a block and will be at the line for the old-fashioned three after a media timeout. It's 29-26, Harlan as we're just past the midpoint of Q2.

Caleb Johnson has two fouls, as does Elijah Bundy. See my note above about this being a 7-4 game when Johnson picked up his second.

Huge development as Harlan County's Caleb Johnson is called for an intentional foul. This is his third foul and we're just past the four minute mark in Q2. Harris at the line and he converts. Coach Kyle Jones is sticking with Caleb Johnson despite his three fouls.

Caleb Johnson just picked up his 4th foul. He was lucky not to get a tripping call in the sequence right before he picked that one up. 32-26, Clay County leads and Harris is at the line for two. 2:24 remaining in Q2. This is a very emotionally charged game.

36-26, Clay County after a Roark three.

36-28, Clay County leads with 56 seconds remaining in the half. Huff had made a really tough shot while looking to draw a foul to bring the lead back to single digits.

36-30, Clay County leads at the half. This one is a WAR. I don't think Clay County's last full possession in the half (excluding the half-court heave at the buzzer) went as they'd drawn it up. Tigers have had a couple of similar possessions, otherwise they could be up even more.

Will be interesting to see the second half. Again, an emotional game with a lot of physical kids getting after one another. Caleb Johnson has four fouls, Elijah Bundy with two for the Tigers. Harlan County has only played six kids (starters and Brody Napier) so far. Clay County has played at least eight (starters, Aiden Wagers, Grayson Hooker, and Tate Rice).

Clay shot 12/29 from the field and 4/6 from three. 41% from the field and 25% from three for Harlan County. Noah has 14, Huff has 8 for Harlan County. Clay County winning the boards 17-15. Tigers with 9 assists to the Black Bear's 6. Both teams have 6 turnovers.

Ethan Jackson with a tripe to open Q3. 39-30, Tigers lead. Immediately after, Harlan attacks Bundy and he picks up his 3rd foul. Michael Jones is leaving him out. 39-32, Clay. Tigers add another 2 after a Grubb basket. Such a balanced attack so far for Clay.

41-34, after a Noah basket. Harlan County has possession after a Clay County turnover. With 5:24 remaining in Q3, Harris picks up a foul and it's back to Harlan.

Harlan County's Brody Napier just picked up his third foul. Another development to watch given Johnson's four. Kyle Jones has brought Caleb back at the 4:51 mark in Q3.

Jaycee Carter just picks up his third foul. Fouls starting to really mount up for Harlan County's supporting cast. Harlan County brings Sophomore Brennan Blevins into the game. 43-34, Clay leads with 4:00 remaining in Q3 after Adon Grubb sinks another huge basket. Just a great game for Grubb so far.

Clay's Harris just picked up his 3rd foul with 2:50 remaining in Q3. Noah will be at the line and looks to cut into the 43-36 Tiger lead. Michael Jones bringing in Wagers to protect Harris from further foul trouble.

Noah gets back to the line after a foul on a rebound. 43-38 with 2:20 remaining in Q3. Black Bears have some momentum as Noah has already eclipsed the 20 point mark.

45-40, Harlan trails but will be back at the line with 1:43 remaining in Q3.

Harris and Bundy both back out there for Clay County as the lead is cut to four.

Noah picks up his first foul and Harris is at the line for Clay County. Tigers leaving some points at the line already tonight. 46-41, Clay County leads.

Bundy with a HUGE and-one and gives Noah his 2nd. 48-45, Clay County leads with 29.5 seconds remaining in Q3. Harlan County had tons of momentum.

Jaycee Carter just picked up a personal foul and Clay's Jackson will be at the line. Announcers seem confused, saying that they thought it was on Noah. Jackson converts and it's 51-47, Clay County at the end of the third quarter. This is setting up for quite the finish.

Carter picks up another foul after leveling Harris. This is his fourth foul (earlier reset where I'd said he had 3 was incorrect). 51-47, Clay with 7:00 remaining in Q4. Two Black Bears starters with four personals.

Maddox Huff just picked up his fourth foul. That's 3 Harlan County starters who are one foul away from disqualification. 51-47, Clay County leads with 6:17 remaining in Q3.

Brody Napier just picks up his fourth for Harlan County.

51-49, Clay leads after a Noah basket. Bundy misses and gets fouled by Brody Napier on the rebound. Napier is out, Blevins back in for the Black Bears. 5:08 remaining in regulation. The scoring pace has slowed in the second half, but the physicality hasn't. Again, Huff, Carter, and Johnson all have four personals as well.

52-49, Clay leads with 4:07 remaining in regulation. Noah just picked up a personal foul and Clay's Grubb will be at the line. Bears' crowd was not happy with the whistle.

Noah coming on. A huge three. 53-52, Clay leads. Harris just picked up his 4th personal. 2:58 remaining in regulation. Momentum is back on Harlan County's side.

53-52, Clay leads. 2:42 remaining in regulation. Clay with 2 timeouts remaining, Harlan with 1. Out of the break, Adon Grubb will be at the line for the Tigers.

Noah ties it at 54 apiece. 2:20 remaining. Trent has 35 on the night so far.

Clay's Bundy just picked up his fourth to put Noah at the line. Tied at 54 with 1:37 remaining. Harlan has not led since very early, but they have a chance to recapture it here.

Huge three from Huff to give Harlan County a 59-55 lead. Huff picks up his fifth on the other end. Harris at the line. 55.4 seconds remaining.

60-58, Harlan County leads with around 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Black Bears' ball out of the timeout.

Harlan County with a deep pass over the top of Clay's pressure (they'd sent three at Noah). Fans not happy with the Bears getting a timeout on the catch. 60-58 with 25.7 seconds remaining in regulation and Harlan set to inbound with no TO's remaining.

Noah gets to the line as Bundy fouls out. 62-58, Harlan County leads with 14 seconds remaining. Noah has 39 and can add to it from the stripe.

64-60, Harlan County. Noah at the line for 2 with 9.1 remaining.

Noah is the real deal! Can you imagine what Jones could have done with some of the tiger teams in recent past years!!? Congratulations to Harlan County well deserved.

Huff is a junior, I think.
