(10) Union 72 Montreat 70
#1
KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Winning isn't easy, and that was evident Friday as top-seeded and No. 10-ranked Union College narrowly escaped the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament semifinal round with a 72-70 win over No. 5 seed Montreat (N.C.).

The tournament is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 22-7 overall and advance to their fifth consecutive conference tournament title game. Montreat ends the year 21-10.

Union led the vast majority of the second half, but it could never shake free from Montreat's continual attack. Dominique Lindsey (SR/Tyrone, Ga.) drained a 3-pointer to put Union up 50-45 with 14:59 left. However, Montreat countered with a 9-0 spurt to grab a 54-50 advantage with 9:05 to go.

The Bulldogs bounced back and reeled off 16 of the next 19 points to take a nine-point lead. Jakobe Wharton (SO/Louisville, Ky.) scored eight of his 14 points during the stretch, including a 3-pointer to put Union ahead 66-57 with 5:57 left on the clock.

Still, Montreat did not back off. An Austin Butler old-fashioned, three-point play pulled the Cavaliers within 68-66 with 1:35 remaining. Then, a Jeron Hemphill putback made it 71-70 Union with 27 seconds to go.

Union turned the ball over with 21 seconds on the clock, giving Montreat a shot at taking the final shot. However, Butler's 3-pointer attempt rimmed out, and Lance Blakely (JR/Lexington, Ky.) the rebound. Lindsey was fouled with 1.6 seconds left and hit one of two at the line, making it 72-70.

Montreat never was able to get a desperation shot off at the buzzer as Stuart Jackson (SR/Louisville, Ky.) stole the ball, sealing the two-point Union victory.

K.J. Duronslet (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) led the Bulldogs with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Lindsey knocked 14.

For the Cavaliers, Hemphill set the tone with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Butler and Terrell Sheffey chipped in 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Up Next

Union takes on No. 7 seed Truett McConnell (Ga.) on Saturday for the tournament championship. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. The teams split during the regular season with each winning on their home floor. This is the Bears first-ever championship appearance, while it is the Bulldogs' eighth. Union is 5-2 in its previous seven appearances.
