Morehead State 70 Eastern Kentucky 66

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team fell at in-state rival Morehead State, 70-66, in its season finale on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Arena.

EKU (11-20, 5-13 OVC) pulled to within one, 65-64, when junior Nick Mayo sank a pair of foul shots with 1:51 remaining in the game. The Colonels forced a miss on the other end and a had a chance to take the lead, but sophomore DeAndre Dishman's shot was blocked by Lamontray Harris.

Morehead State (8-21, 4-14 OVC) then got a jumper from Djimon Henson, forced a turnover and got a two free throws from Jordan Walker to grab a five-point lead, 69-64, with 44 seconds on the clock.

A tip-in by Dishman made it a three-point deficit with 26 seconds left, but a Colonel turnover with five seconds left sealed the loss.

Mayo finished with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Dishman added 12 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Senior Zach Charles grabbed 10 rebounds for the Colonels.

Walker led Morehead State with 23 points, while Harris recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards.

Eastern jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the game as the Colonels stifled the Eagles to 1-of-14 shooting from the field in the early going.

Morehead State slowly clawed back into the game and took its first lead, 28-27, when Walker converted a layup with four seconds remaining in the first half.

EKU rallied out of the locker room and took a four-point advantage, 36-32, on a free throw by Mayo with 16:26 remaining.

The hosts, however, responded with a 19-4 run and took their largest lead of the game, 51-40, on a layup by Harris with 11:16 showing.

The Colonels were not done. A driving layup by freshman JacQuess Hobbs sparked a 10-0 EKU run and made it 51-50 with 8:19 on the clock. A dunk by Mayo tied it at 60-60 with 4:55 remaining, but that was as close as the Colonels got.

The loss eliminates EKU from OVC Tournament contention.

I hope this loss also eliminates any chance of McHale coming back. Time for a change at the top. Maybe a new AD while they are at it.
