Eastern Kentucky 75 Morehead State 73
#1
RICHMOND, Ky. – JacQuess Hobbs drove the length of the court to hit the go-ahead basket and EKU held on for a 75-73 victory over Morehead State Saturday at McBrayer Arena.

Hobbs went 94-feet after taking the ball at the baseline on an inbounds pass to hit a heavily contested layup that put the Colonels up 74-72 with 3.8 seconds remaining. Eastern fouled with 1.7 left on the ensuing Eagles possession and sent A.J. Hicks to the line, where he had made all five attempts to that point. Hicks hit his first free throw, but hit rim on the second and the Colonels grabbed the board.

A Morehead foul sent DeAndre Dishman to the line, who nailed the first of his two attempts. The second free throw rimmed out and the Eagles put up a heave from half court that missed wide right.

Nick Mayo followed up his career-high 36-point performance on Thursday with 18 on Saturday, nailing back-to-back threes to open the game. Dishman scored 13 points and came down with a game-high nine rebounds, while Zach Charles and Hobbs both contributed 15 points.

The Colonels (9-18, 3-11 OVC) out-rebounded Morehead 32-28. The Eagles came into the game with a +3.5 rebound margin. The lead changed hands eight times and was tied six times, two of those ties coming within the final 30 seconds.

Eastern drained three straight trifectas in a row to propel an 11-0 run to take a 55-52 lead with 7:29 left in the second half. Morehead used the free throw line to battle back to a 63-60 lead with 3:30 remaining. The Colonels responded immediately with seven unanswered to retake a 67-63 lead with just over a minute to go. The Eagles never reassumed the lead.

Morehead State (6-19, 2-12 OVC) was led by Jordan Walker's 16 points and three rebounds. Hicks contributed 15 points, including 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line.

EKU scored the first 11 points of the game courtesy of Mayo's consecutive three's, a layup by Zach Charles, and another three pointer by Dishman.

Eastern Kentucky hits the road next week for back-to-back games in Nashville, Tennessee, facing Belmont University on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
