MOREHEAD, Ky. â Despite cutting a 17-point deficit down to single digits in the second half, Morehead State men's basketball absorbed an 83-73 defeat to OVC-leading Belmont at Johnson Arena Saturday.
Sophomore forward Londell King paced Morehead State with 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while sophomore guard Djimon Henson cracked double-figures too with 14 in an off-the-bench role today. The Eagles slid to 6-17 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
"I think our kids played hard, and we fought today," said head coach Preston Spradlin. "But you have to credit Belmont. They are so good in all areas. You know we only had 11 turnovers today which was good for us, but they turned that into 20 points. So with Belmont they just have so many weapons and ways to beat you. But we worked hard, and I was proud of our effort."
Belmont won holding a 19-7 advantage at the free throw line too. The Bruins were 19-of-24 at the stripe. The Eagles did hold the Bruins to just eight three-pointers after the league's leading long range team entered averaging 12.
Freshman forward Malek Green came up with 10 rebounds as the Eagles were only slightly out-boarded 36-35.
The home team nailed 10 three-pointers, its second-best effort of the campaign.
Belmont built its largest lead at 53-36 with 16:49 remaining, but the Eagles managed to cut that to as low as seven (58-51) with 9:40 left. However, the visitors went on to push their cushion back out to as much as 17 on two more occasions.
Juniors Lamontray Harris and A.J. Hicks also got into double-figures in the scoring column with 11 each. Hicks also came within one of his career-high assist total with seven dimes.
Morehead State closes its three-game homestand on Thursday versus Southeast Missouri. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET.
