(12) UPIKE 79 (18) The Cumberlands 58
#1
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The 12th-ranked University of Pikeville men's basketball team improved to 3-1 against top-25 opponents with a 79-58 win over No. 18 Cumberlands on Thursday night.

Rze Culbreath made all three of his 3-pointers to finish with 15 points, Darrion Leslie led all players with 17 points and Da'Rell Domineck chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Malik Colvin-Seldon paced Cumberlands with 14 points as the only Patriot to reach double figures.

The Bears outshot Cumberlands 50-31 percent and controlled the glass 37-28 and posted a 9-2 advantage in steals.

To no surprise, this one was a defensive battle as the Bears entered with the nation's fourth-ranked defense and the Patriots were close behind with the 16th.

There was the quick start for UPIKE (19-2, 4-2 MSC), leading 7-0 after a Culbreath 3, but even after leading by as many as seven points, it was down to a two-point game at 23-21 with 5:59 left in the half.

It continued like that for a few minutes, the Bears would creep out to leads of five or six points, only to see it be cut in half or more soon after. With 2:28 on the clock, UPIKE found itself still in front by just two at 28-26. About a minute later, Anthony Eaves hit his second 3 of the half to give Cumberlands its first lead.

UPIKE wouldn't stay down long though as it closed the half with a mini 4-0 run thanks to baskets by Jordan Perry and Rodney Hawkins to lead 32-29 at the break.

You couldn't have scripted a better start to the second half for UPIKE as it went on a 15-0 run over the first 5:20. A single free throw by Eaves got Cumberlands (16-4, 4-2 MSC) on the board, but another 7-1 spurt followed and the Bears had their largest lead yet of 23 points after a Culbreath 3 and Domineck layup.

The Bears went on to lead by as many as 25 points as the Patriots didn't make their first field goal until a 3 by Labranche with 10:48 to play. Cumberlands wasn't done though as it came alive with a 12-2 run to get within 15 in less than four minutes.

UPIKE made sure the comeback was short lived though as Chase Parsley, Perry and Leslie made three straight shots at the rim to get the lead back out to 22 points with 3:19 to play. The teams basically traded baskets the rest of the way, including a 3 by Parsley and lob to Domineck to close out the game.
