COLUMBIA, Ky. â A Bryan Wallace steal with less than 10 seconds to play thwarted a potential game-winning shot by Fisk (Tenn.) as the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team held on for a 75-72 victory on Monday night at Biggers Sports Center.
With 13.8 seconds to play and down by a point, Fisk (10-5) had the ball for a potential game winner. But Wallace had other plans as he was able to strip the ball from Joshua Madison, and then tossed it up to teammate Jordan Hamlette for a layup at the buzzer to help the No. 2-ranked Blue Raiders (19-1) avoid a second-straight loss.
LWC trailed for the majority of the second half, from the 13:43 mark all the way to the 1:58 mark before Kel Stotts nailed a three pointer, his fifth of the night, to put the Blue Raiders ahead 73-72. The teams then combined for five-straight empty possessions, the game going scoreless until Hamlette's last-second basket.
Stotts finished with a career-high 27 points on the night. Charles Sutton was one rebound shy of a double-double, posting 19 points and nine rebounds. Hamlette finished with 12 points and Wallace had 11 points, six assists and five steals.
Lindsey Wilson started the contest just 1-for-7 from the floor, which allowed Fisk to build a 9-3 advantage. That lead was short lived though as Stotts hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers to put the Blue Raiders out front 12-9. Sutton later capped the 11-0 run with a layup to make it 14-9 with 12:48 to go in the first half.
Fisk slowly closed the gap over the next six minutes, cutting it down to a single point at 18-17. That prompted a 6-0 LWC run to extend the lead to 24-17 with 5:37 left in the half.
Once again though the Bulldogs had a response, this time outscoring the Blue Raiders 19-9 for the remainder of the half to take a 36-33 lead into halftime. The LWC defense was unable to deter the aggressive Fisk guards from driving towards the rim as the Bulldogs scored 22 of their first half points in the paint.
LWC's shooting struggles amounted to a 34.5 percentage (10-29) at the half, the Blue Raiders hitting 3-of-11 from deep. Fisk shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the floor in the half, making 3-of-9 attempts from three-point range.
Lindsey Wilson erased the deficit early in the second half and pulled ahead 44-42 after Hamlette completed a three-point play at the 14:39 mark.
The two teams traded the lead for the next five minutes, neither able to pull ahead by more than two until Fisk scored six-straight to go up 58-53 with 8:36 to play. Hamlette hit a three on the ensuing possession as the Blue Raiders attempted to claw closer, but Fisk continued to drain shots left and right and built a 70-61 lead with 5:05 to play.
But from there it was all Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders continued to fight and claw and finally pulled ahead after a 13-2 run capped off by Stotts' three with just fewer than two minutes to play. The Blue Raiders held Fisk without a basket from the floor for the final five minutes, the Bulldogs scoring just twice on a pair of free throws.
El Paso Pitts led the Bulldogs with 19 points in the loss.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday night as they host Campbellsville (Ky.) at 8 p.m. CT.
