5A Region 4 Playoff Seeding
#1
District 7

District 7 is pretty cut and dry.
Next week will decide the seedings.
We do know the following.

The winner of the Southwestern and Pulaski game wins district and gets the one seed. The loser gets the two seed.

Same goes for the South Laurel and Lincoln County game. Winner gets the 3 seed and loser gets the 4 seed. This should be a good game.

As for a prediction, I think the following happens...
1. Southwestern
2. Pulaski County
3. Lincoln County
4. South Laurel

District 8

District 8 is not as cut and dry.
One thing we do know for certain is Letcher Central has been eliminated from playoff contention, even if they were to upset Whitley next week.

Assuming Harlan County beats Perry at home and Whitley takes care of business at Letcher, there will be a three way tie for first and a tiebreaker would have to decide the outcome.

Lets look at the different scenarios if unexpected outcomes happen this week.

If Perry beats Harlan County, and Whitley beats Letcher....

1. North Laurel 3-1 (would own head to head over Whitley)
2. Whitley County 3-1
3. Perry Central 2-2 (would own head to head over Harlan County)
4. Harlan County 2-2

If Perry beats Harlan County and Letcher beats Whitley...

1. North Laurel 3-1
2. Whitley County 2-2 (would own head to head over Perry and HC)
3. Perry Central 2-2 (would own head to head over Harlan County)
4. Harlan County 2-2

If Harlan County beats Perry Central and Whitley loses to Letcher...

1. Harlan County 3-1 (would own head to head over North)
2. North Laurel 3-1
3. Whitley County 2-2
4. Perry Central 1-3 (Would own head to head over Letcher)

Now the fun part....

If Harlan County beats Perry Central and Whitley beats Letcher Central....

Tiebreaker would come in to effect. So theres no confusion, here is the tiebreaker rules....

b) TIE-BREAKER (more than two teams). Should three or more
teams tie for the a district position based upon the win-loss
record, the position shall be determined by the following:
i) If one of the teams has defeated each of the other teams
tied in games contested between them, that team shall be
declared to hold the highest position, and the winner of the
game between the remaining teams (if less than four) shall
be declared the second highest position. In the event of more than three teams being tied, where one has defeated
each of the tied teams, that team shall be declared the
highest position, and the tie-breaking procedure shall be
re-applied for the remaining tied teams.
ii) If the tie remains, each team tied for the position shall
receive one point for each game won by any four of their
defeated opponents in all games, except for the games
played between any two of the tied teams. All games played
shall be counted in applying the tie-breaking procedure,
including out of state games, with the exception that a
defeated school may be counted only once in the procedure
regardless of the number of games played against that
particular school. Teams awarded forfeit victories (whether
or not a forfeit fee is paid) may count the defeated opponents
of the forfeiting team, provided the game was not replaced
on the schedule.

iii) If the tie remains after application of provision (ii), an
additional defeated opponent’s wins will be added to the
point total for each team until the tie is broken and the
winner of the tied position declared, or until all games are
exhausted.
iv) If the tie for the position involves only three teams, and the
application of (ii) and (iii) results in one team being declared
the winner of the tied position based on point totals, the
highest point total from the application of (ii) and (iii)
between the two remaining tied teams shall be declared to
hold the next position.
v) If the tie for the championship involves more than three
teams, and the application of (ii) and (iii) results in one
team being declared the winner of the tied position based
on point totals, the procedure shall then be re-applied to
determine the next position.
vi) If the tie for the position involves more than three teams,
and the application of (ii) and (iii) results in two teams
remaining tied for the position based on points, the head
to head game played between them shall break the tie, and
head to head competition will break any remaining ties.
vii) If a tie results after application of all provisions of the
above plan, the tie shall be broken by the Commissioner.

North Laurel

(Bolded are the 4 wins that would be used)

South Laurel- 3 wins. 2 games left.
Prestonsburg- 5 Wins. 2 games left.

East Jessamine- 5 Wins. 2 games left.
Grant County- 0 wins. 2 games left
Perry Central- 6 wins. 1 games left (note this is with a loss to HC)
Letcher Central- 0 wins. 1 game left. (note this is with a loss to whitley)
(Norths only game left) Clay County- 1 win

Current points using 4 highest teams- 19
Possible total points left- 26

Whitley County

(Bolded are the 4 wins that would be used)

Leslie County- 4 wins. 1 game left.
Bell County- 5 wins. 2 games left.
East Jessamine- 5 wins. 1 game left

Perry Central- 6 wins. 1 game left. (note this is with a loss to HC )
Letcher Central- 0 wins 1 game left (note this is with a loss to whitley)
(Whitleys only game left) Hazard- 5 wins- 1 game left (would lose to WC to count for WC)

Current points using 4 highest teams- 21 (only 20 if they lose to Hazard and have to use Leslie instead)
Possible total Points left- 26

Harlan County

(Bolded are the 4 wins that would be used. Note HC will only have 4 wins total to use)

Ashland- 7 wins. 1 game left.
Letcher Central- 0 wins. 1 game left (note this is with a loss to whitley)
Perry Central- 6 wins. 1 game left. (note this is with a loss to HC)
(Harlan Countys only game left) Bell County- 5 wins. 1 games left. (assuming HC beats Bell the point total would be the same for Whitley. If they lose to Bell, Whitley gains while HC doesn't.)

Current total points using 4 highest teams- 18
Possible total Points left- 21

Under this tie breaker scenario, we know a couple of things.
Whitley or North will be the one seed and win district.
Harlan County will be the 3.
Perry will be the 4.
Letcher is eliminated.
We wont know who wins until after the final week of the regular season.

1. Whitley/North
2. Whitley/North
3. Harlan County
4. Perry Central

Note: If North and Whitley are tied on points after the final week, then another team can be added until the tie breaker is exhausted. Meaning, If Whitley beats Hazard, then they could also use the Leslie win to break the tie and win district. North wont have another win to use besides Clay who only won 1 games to Leslies 4.

If Whitley loses to Hazard and they are tied with North in tiebreaker points, then North could use Clays one win to win the tiebreaker since Whitley would not have any more wins to count.

Thoughts?

My mind is blown reading that. I would assume that Whitley beats Letcher and HC beats perry. Then I’ll predict that Whitley gets beat by hazard. North will kill clay, so I’ll go with North winning district.
#3
Whitley wins district given no pcc upsets.
#4
Lot of good work on that, appreciate it. Gonna be surprised if it's not Whitley one, North two, just don't see Perry winning at HC. Both then win first home playoff game, making region semis North at Southwestern, Pulaski at Whitley. Region finals Whitley at Southwestern. Southwestern should be favorite, but I think North or Whitley either one could knock them off.
#5
I now need Tylenol. Thanks for the research though.
#6
This could change dramatically with a bunch of these teams having two games where they could add to their win total. Prestonsburg at Perry Central and Harlan County vs Bell are big games. Leslie only has Hazard left so they are not likely to add to their win total. Wins over Perry Central and East Jessamine cancel each other out. South Laurel has Clay County left which should be a win. Whitley just needs to beat Hazard. No easy task.
#7
Reading all that gave me a headache!!
#8
Looks like it is pretty cut and dry to me, Whitley beats hazard they win district
If they lose to hazard North wins district
Either way we are third pretty much, what talent we have tj finish third 🙄
Maybe we can start season over in the playoffs and pretend it is week one again
#9
Not much difference between top 3 in Whitley, North or Harlan.
#10
It is definitely not out of the question this year that Harlan Co. could go on the road and beat Pulaski Co. in the first round if the seedings shake out that way.
#11
All three teams are capable of beating Pulaski at their place this year.

Whitley County will pull a big upset and move on to Lexington to face The Colonels
#13
I think it turns out one of two ways.

4. Perry @ 1. Southwestern
3. Lincoln County/South Laurel @ 2. North Laurel/Whitley

4. South Laurel/Lincoln @ 1. Whitley/North Laurel
3. Harlan County @ Pulaski County

IMHO the only close first round game will be Harlan County/Pulaski County
#14
SL has 3 wins and games against Lincoln Co and Harlan Ind.
#15
Boy there is a whole bunch of scenarios. In this mess.
#16
Comes down to the last week in the tie breaker. Whitley beats Hazard and they are 1 seed. If they lose it gets very convoluted.
#17
North Laurel

(Bolded are the 4 wins that would be used)

South Laurel- 4 wins. Should beat harlan for 5 wins.
Prestonsburg- 6 Wins. 1 game left against Perry so North will get one point either way there.

East Jessamine- 6 wins. Season over.
Grant County- 0 wins. 1 games left
Perry Central- 6 wins. 1 games left again prestnsburg so north will get extra point either way.
Letcher Central- 0 wins. 1 game left.
(Norths only game left) Clay County- 2 wins

Current points using 4 highest teams- 22
Should finish with 24.

Whitley County

(Bolded are the 4 wins that would be used)

Leslie County- 4 wins. Season over.
Bell County- 6 wins. 1 games left.
East Jessamine- 6 wins. Season over

Perry Central- 6 wins. 1 game left.
Letcher Central- 0 wins 1 game left
(Whitleys only game left) Hazard- 6 wins

Current points using 4 highest teams (with win over hazard) - 24
If perry beats Pburgs and bell wins over HC 26
Whitley could pick up extra points with a bell win over Harlan County and cancel out a North point if perry beats Pburgs.

If the tie remains after Friday, a fifth opponent would be added to the score for each team. Whitley could add Leslie's 4 wins while North could only add clays 2 wins so Whitley would win in that scenario. It doesn't go to a head to head until all wins have been exhausted.

I really think the district championship is going to rest in two things.
1. Whitley beating hazard obviously
2. The winner of the perry-Pburg game has HUGE implications. If perry wins and Whitley beats hazard, North can't catch up but it really doesn't matter anyways. Even if that happens, so long as Whitley beats hazard it would go to a fifth team where Whitley could use Leslie to seal the win on points.
#18
Hopefully hazard rest all their starters for the playoffs.
I know I would against a team on a mission with a lot more to play for.
#19
Hazard will be a tall task for the Colonels.
#20
E's Army Wrote:Hazard will be a tall task for the Colonels.

If I'm hazard I don't care about this game at all
#21
Hazard always cares about winning. They can rest against Pineville
#22
In the case that Whitley loses to hazard, both teams would currently sit at 22 points.
After Friday North will have 24.
In order for Whitley to get to 24, Bell would have to beat Harlan County and Perry would need to beat Pburg forcing a tie once again that Whitley would win after going to a fifth team.
So Whitley would still have a shot to win district with a loss to hazard, but they'd need big time help from bell and perry to do it.
