Mr. Football: State Champions vs. Non-State Champions

Out of the 30 Mr. Football winners....
10 Mr. Football's have won a Football State Championship in the same season they won the award, 20 have not.

Shouldn't the best High School Football player in the state, in every class, be on a state championship team? Why do we have a 2 to 1 split on this?

Not necessarily. Tim Couch didn't win a state title, but he was the #1 recruit in the nation. Obviously he's going to win Mr. Football. Shaun Alexander was a top recruit, and had no title. It would have been tough for me to give any credibility to an argument that went against guys like that. It's an individual award, so to me, it should go to the best football player. Whether his team wins a title or not.

Being the best player on the best team should not equal winning the award.

With that said, being the best player on the best team should help the chances of being a finalist.
