Top Ten 2a games of week ending 8-20-16
#1
Well, it's finally here!!! The best time of the year is finally upon us once again. Not only should we be excited about the start of another great football season but, we have reason to be excited about the great slate of 2a games this week. It will start to give us a glimpse into where teams appear to be headed. A lot of teams playing above their heads in classification and a lot of teams playing highly ranked teams, should make for great games. So without further ado, here is this weeks top ten:

1) #4 Newport Cent Cath 2a @ #7 Scott 4a
Wow you talk about what appears to be a great game. This has everything that one should have to qualify for that. First, you have 2 teams ranked in the top ten of their perspective classes going at it. Next you have a defending state runner up going against a team that made it to the regionals last year. Then you have a rematch of a 1 point win by Scott from last year. That's right Scott won this one by a score of 8-7 last year. NCC went on to a 9-6 season as the state runners up in 2a. Scott finished with an impressive 10-3 record in 4a regionals. This will be an epic battle folks. Get there early.

2) #10 Campbellsville 1a @ #14 Glasgow 2a
Here we have a matchup of two teams that are looking to prove themselves among the best of their perspective classes. We also have a revenge match of a 6 point game from last year A's Campbellsville edged the Scotties 22-16. You also have two teams that finished with close to similar records. The Eagles finished at 8-4 in the second round of the playoffs. Glasgow finished at 6-6 in the second round of the playoffs. Both teams will look to use this game to springboard their season. Looks to be another barn burner.

3) #6 Simon Kenton 6a @ #3 Lou Christian Academy 2a
This one only slipped to the three spot due to the score of last years meeting. This should be another great one. On one hand you have a top ten 6a team that regards this as a game they have to win big in order to show that they are among the top of 6a. Then on the other hand you have a top tier 2a team that knows they want to move to the next level and have seen the last 3 titles of their class won by teams that win against big school teams, and realize they need to show they can as well. Last year S-K made it to the semis in 6a at 13-1 on the year. CAL made it just 1 round short of the semis in 2a finishing at 10-3. This game however wasn't close last year as S-K won 50-23. It also should be a packed house on a new field, for lots of excitement.

4) #9 Cov Holy Cross 2a @ Holmes 4a
Here you have a game between a small team creating a lot of buzz and a bigger school team that's middle of the pack. This game went to the wire last year as the 6-6 small team beat the 4-7 big school by a score of 24-20. This certainly appears to be a game that will keep everyone entertained until the buzzer sounds.

5) Hart Co 3a @ Ballard Memorial 2a
Here we have a rematch of two teams that finished in similar fashion last year. We also have a rematch of a game that was low scoring with the bigger school winning 18-0. Hart County finished last year at 6-5 and the Bombers at 5-5. Last year Hart had home field advantage in the win. Can the Bombers reverse this with home field advantage this year?

6) Walton Verona 2a @ #11 Loyd Memorial 2a
Another rematch of a barn burner from last year. Lloyd pulled out the close victory 28-20 on the road last year. Lloyd went on to an impressive 9-4 season last year. WV finished up in the second round of the playoffs at 6-6 last year. Will this matchup be as great as last year? I would love to be able to see this one.

7) Hopkins Co Central 4a @ Webster Co 2a
Here we have a game between two teams that need all the taste of victory they can get. Last years matchup came down to the wire as HCC won 22-14 at home. The two finished up with similar records as well. HCC went 2-9 on the year. Webster finished at 1-10. Can Webster use home field to reverse the rolls this year and get off to a great start?

8) So Floyd 1a @ Betsy Ln 2a
This is a rematch of another great game from last year as So Floyd used home field to win 38-20. So Floyd finished up last year at 3-8. Betsy Ln finished at 0-10 and could definitely use this game to end that streak.

9) Barren Co 5a @ Metcalfe Co 2a
This is a game between two teams that want to get their season started in a different direction than it took last year. This is also a rematch of what appears to be a good game from last year. The big school team pulled this one out last year on their own field 28-14. Barren finished up at 4-7. Metcalfe finished up at 2-9. Can the small school use the home field to make the reversal this yeast?

10) Fairdale 5a @ #2 DeSales 2a
Here we have a game between two successful teams from last year. This game was won last year in convincing fashion by the small school Colts 42-6. Fairdale however went on to an impressive 7-5 season. DeSales used this game to springboard them into another great year which finished in the semis at 12-2. This is also the inauguration of the brand new stadium and field for the Colts. This will be a packed house and should be a great one to watch.

Well there you go ladies and gents. I hope you enjoy. May you all have a great time and be safe. Also take the time to think of all of those that have given us the freedom to be able to enjoy this great game.

Ballard Memorial should turn the tables on Hart County. The Bombers return Marinelli at QB with some nice athletes in Bledsoe (RB), Collier (WR), and Williams (WR). It appears Hart Co lost several to graduation including top notch players (E. Powell - WR/DB) and (J. Walters - OL/DL). The long drive won't help matters.

Evansville Mater Dei, IN @ Owensboro Catholic should be a dandy!!
