The 2014 Cats Pause
#1
3A District 5

1. Bourbon County (13-1): The Colonels have only lost twice in two seasons and expect to be a 3A title contender again in 2014.

2. Garrard County (7-5): Jerry Perry compiled a 65-18 record as the Golden Lions head coach from 1990-96 and returns for his second stint.

3. Estill County (5-6): This maybe the Engineers best shot to make some noise since advancing to the regional final in 2008.

4. Bath County (3-7): The Wildcats return several starters on both sides of the ball, including dangerous QB/WR combo DeKeiton Young and Taborn Kissick.

5. Powell County (7-4): The Pirates have big holes to fill after saying goodbye to the winningest senior class in school history, but should be solid up front.

6. Western Hills (1-9): The Wolverines should improve with a 20 plus upperclassmen, numbers they've not had during the struggles of the past two seasons.

Preseason Favorite: Bourbon County

The Colonels have gone 26-2 in John Hodge's first two seasons as head coach. Each of those seasons ended with loses to Belfry in the state semi-finals. Bourbon County has the talent to three-peat as region champs and be in position to push through to Bowling Green.

The Colonels offensive line should be a strength, and they will lean on running backs Brent Holman and Marquaze Hill while they develop a quarterback to replace Dalton Pope. Pope accounted for more than 3,900 yards and 62 touchdowns passing and rushing over the past two seasons. Bourbon County also lost last year's top two pass catchers, Jaxson Hilander and Charles Johnson. But Holman and Hill expect to provide plenty of production after combining for nearly 2,600 yards rushing and 49 total touchdowns last season.

Proven performers return on the D-Line, but the second level of the defense will lack experience. Gone is the school's all-time leading tackler, linebacker Dakota Mitchell. The aforementioned Hilander and Johnson also left big shoes to fill in the secondary.

Sleeper: Estill County

The Engineers have an exceptional athlete in senior QB Trevor Jones, who threw for 1,351 yards and 13 TDs while rushing for 1,180 yards and 14 TDs last season. Head Coach Mike Jones said he has more skill kids than he's ever had in his previous 13 seasons at Estill County. Among 13 seniors is kicker Levi Tipton, who received an invite to Auburn's camp in the offseason.

2014 Preseason Player of the Year

Brent Holman, Bourbon County, Sr., RB, 5-9, 192.

Homan rushed for 1,970 yards and 34 touchdowns to go with 256 yards and five touchdowns receiving last season. The Colonels handed it to Holman 11 times a game on average. That could increase this season and see the senior eclipse the 2,000 yard mark.

Players to Watch:
Nate Brooks, Powell County, Jr., OL/DL, 6-1, 240; Clayton Cox, Bourbon County, Jr., OL/DL, 6-3, 265; Colton Gibson, Bourbon County, Sr., OL/DL, 6-2, 265; Marquase Hill, Bourbon County, Jr., RB, 5-8, 180; Trevor Jones, Estill County, Sr., QB, 5-10, 170; Taborn Kissick, Bath County, Sr., WR, 6-0, 175; Nick Lockett, Western Hills, Sr., RB/DB, 6-0, 175; J.T. Lyon, Garrard County, Sr., LB/TE, 6-0, 200; Nick McCollum, Garrard County, Jr., DB/WR, 6-3, 165; Chance Snowden, Powell County, Sr., RB/DB, 5-8, 160; Levi Tipton, Estill County, Sr., K, 5-11, 165; DeKeiton Young, Bath County, Sr., QB, 5-10, 170.

3A District 6

1. Mason County (12-1): The Royals ran into a buzzsaw in Bourbon County last year's regional final round. This year, the Royals might play a role of buzzsaw against some. The high powered offense (39 PPG) won't slow down much, even with the departure of the Royals' leading rusher.

2. Russell (7-5): The Red Devils and Royals figure to decide the district once again when they meet at Russell.

3. Lewis County (7-4): Quarterback Isaac Weddington (1,626 passing yards, 22 TDs, 11 INTs) and two of his top three receivers return.

4. Fleming County (3-8): The Panthers were porous defensively last year, but they were extremely young. A large senior class, including some quality skill players, could paint a much prettier picture in 2014. They return 10 starters on each side of the ball.

5. West Carter (2-8): The Comets went through some growing pains last season. Depth may still be an issue, but starters at the skill positions give reason for West Carter to be upbeat.

6. East Carter (4-6): The Raiders are inexperienced, overall, with just five seniors and eight juniors. Not all are full-time players. Coach Zack Moore expects the team to "improve daily barring injury." Jordan Ratcliff, one of their top players from a year ago, transferred.

Preseason Favorite: Mason County

A strong senior group should hoist the Royals to the top again. Quarterback Jake O'Mara (3,461 career passing yards) is a four year starter. The 6-foot-4, 215 pounder is receiving looks from Marshall, Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky. Tight end/defensive end Ashton Humphrey has WKU on his trail. Rico Hill, a fullback and linebacker, ran 108 times for 987 yards and 11 TDs as a junior. John Combs Buchanan (226 career tackles) and Ryan Johnson (31 catches for 367 yards in 2013) join O'Mara as four-year starters.

New Direction: Russell

After 37 years under the direction of Ivan McGlone, a period that included two state championships and a slew of success, Russell will have a new coach roaming the sidelines. T.J. Maynard, a former Red Devil player, takes over after guiding Raceland to a Class A regional title last season. Maynard's new squad contains a notable deal of talent in the freshmen and sophomore classes.

Preseason player of the Year

John Combs Buchanan, Mason County, Sr., LB/OG, 6-2, 195.

Buchanan is fewer than 100 tackles away from owning the most in school history. At 6-2, 195, Buchanan earned first-team All-State recognition by the Courier Journal in 2013. Princeton, Yale and Kent State are among the schools recruiting Buchanan.

Players to Watch

Landon Arnold, Russell, Sr., OL/ LB; Jacob Boyd, Fleming County, Sr., QB/DB; Braden Brown, West Carter, Jr., QB/DB; Maverick Burnett, Fleming County, Sr., RB/DB; Nick Conley, Russell, So., RB/DB; Jordan Davis, Lewis County, Sr., WR/DB; Ryan Hall, East Carter, Sr., OL/DL; Rico Hill, Mason County, Sr., RB/LB; Evan Huddle, East Carter, Jr., K/P; Ashton Humphrey, Mason County, Sr., TE/DE; Aaron James, Fleming County, Sr., WR/DB, Bronson Korzep, Russell, Sr., RB/DB; Tristen Marshall, West Carter, Sr., RB/DB, Tyler Mustard, Lewis County, Sr., RB/DB; Jake O'Mara, Mason County, Sr., QB; Darin Phillips, East Carter, Jr., RB/DB; Dalton Stamm, Lewis County, Sr., RB/DL; Zach Walker, West Carter, Jr., WR/DB; Isaac Weddington, Lewis County, Sr., QB; Peyton Wilburn, East Carter, Jr., OL/DL; Wilder Williams, Fleming County, Sr., TE/LB; Kyle Yates, East Carter, Sr., WR/DB

3A District 8

1. Belfry (14-1): Reigning state champion Belfry has reloaded for another run at another title.

2. Pike County Central (7-6): The Hawks fell to district foe Belfry in last year's region title game.

3. Lawrence County (8-4): The Bulldogs opened the 2013 season 7-0 before dropping four of their last five games.

4. Sheldon Clark (0-10): The Cardinals are much more experienced after struggling through a winless campaign.

Preseason Favorite: Belfry

Tradition-rich Belfry is poised to vie for a second straight state title. Belfry lost its top two rushers and quarterback to graduation but returns a host of talented players. The Pirates remain the dominate team in the district.

Leading receivers Keaton Taylor (605 yards) and third-leading rusher Austin Hatfield (703 yards) are back for the Pirates. A junior, Taylor will be hauling in passes from a new starting quarterback. Now a senior, Hatfield is set to help lead the Belfry ground game for a second straight season.

In addition to Taylor and Hatfield, Cameron Catron (QB/DB), T.J. Dotson (RB/DE), RayQuan Horton (TE/DT), Dakota Stanley (TE/LB), Xondre Willis (RB/DB) and Cole Bentley (TE/NT) also return for the Pirates.

Belfry's only loss in the 2013 season came to Johnson Central in the regular-season finale. The Pirates, under the direction of head coach Philip Haywood, the state's all-time winningest coach, outscored opponents 539-248 last season.

Belfry edged Wayne County 3-0 on Austin Woolum 35-yard field goal in the 2013 Class 3A state championship game. Woolum, a sophomore, also returns for the Pirates.

Still Pushing: Pike County Central

Senior quarterback Mac Justice and senior wide receiver Brad Elkins are back to lead Pike County Central's aerial attack. Last season, Justice and Elkins combined to form one of the state's top quarterback-receiver tandems.

The Hawks finished runner-up to Belfry in both the district and the region. Pike County Central knocked off Morgan County and former state powerhouse Breathitt County before falling to Belfry in the region title game.

Pike County Central scored 457 points in 13 games last season. The Hawks, however, allowed 438 points during the 2013 campaign.

2014 Preseason Player of the Year

Austin Hatfield, Belfry, Sr., RB/LB/DE, 5-9, 215.

Austin Hatfield was instrumental in Belfry's latest state championship season as he rushed 109 times for 703 yards and six touchdowns. Now set to take on an even bigger role in Belfry's rushing attack, Hatfield rushed for two touchdowns in Belfry's 21-13 victory over Bourbon County in the 2013 Class 3A State Semifinals. On the defensive side, Hatfield registered 43 tackles last year.

Players to Watch

Cole Bentley, Belfry, So., TE/NT, 6-5, 260; Brandon Butcher, Sheldon Clark, Jr., RB/DB, 5-10, 165; Cameron Catron, Belfry, So., QB/DB, 5-9, 160; Timmy Dalton, Lawrence County, So., WR/DB, 6-3, 160; T.J. Dotson, Belfry, Jr., RB/DE, 5-11, 165; Brad Elkins, Pike County Central, Sr., WR/DB, 5-11, 160; RayQuan Horton, Belfry, So., TE/DT, 6-2, 260; Mac Justice, Pike County Central, Sr., QB/DB, 6-0, 160; Noah Lambert, Lawrence County, Sr., WR/DB, 6-0, 170; Chase Muncy, Sheldon Clark, Jr., RB/LB, 5-10, 190; Dakota Stanley, Belfry, Sr., TE/LB, 5-10, 200, Keaton Taylor, Belfry, Sr., WR/DB, 6-0, 160; Xondre Willis, Belfry, Sr., RB/DB, 5-10, 165

Class 3A District 4

1. Bell County (7-5): Wayne Mills' Bobcats look to get back at the top of the district with nine starters returning on offense and eight on defense.

2. Corbin (9-3): New coach Justin Haddix takes over a team that will return 22 seniors while looking to capture a district championship during his first year as the Redhounds' head coach.

3. Wayne County (14-1): The Cardinals were one win away from capturing a state championship this past season and will now try to replace nine starters on offense and eight on defense.

4. McCreary Central (0-10): The Raiders are coming off a winless season, but have hopes of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

5. Casey County (2-9): The Rebels are hoping to build off last season's two-win campaign.

Preseason Favorite: Bell County

Wayne Mills' Bobcats return the bulk of their talent from last season's 7-5 squad, which includes quarterback Peyton Collet, running back Austin Caldwell, defensive back Hayden Gilbert and linebacker Justin Green.

"This team returns a lot of players from last year's squad." Mills said. "We have nine starters returning on offense and eight starters on defense. We also have 10 seniors on the roster as well. If we can stay away from injuries, we could have a good run in the playoffs."

Knocking on the Door: Corbin

With new coach Justin Haddix taking over the reigns at Corbin, many Redhound faithful like their team's chances of winning the district and making a deep run in the playoffs.

Haddix inherited a squad that will return 10 starters on offense and five on defense. Twenty-two seniors also return to the mix for Haddix's squad.

"I'm excited to get things going here," Haddix said. "Corbin has a lot of tradition, and I'm hoping we can continue the tradition.

"I've got to meet the kids, and they are ready to go." he added. This is an exciting time for Corbin football.

2014 Preseason player of the Year

Jake Coppock, Corbin, Sr., RB/LB, 6-0, 102.

Coppock ran for more than 1,000 yards on the ground last season for the Redhounds. Not only is he a force running with the ball, but he's also a force catching the ball out of the backfield as well. His talents in the backfield will give Corbin an edge in the backfield over most of the teams the Redhounds will face this season.

Players to Watch
Austin Caldwell, Bell County, Sr., RB, 5-10, 180; Peyton Collett, Bell County, Jr., QB, 6-2, 185; Hayden Gilbert, Bell County, Sr., DB/K/P, 6-1, 175; Justin Green, Bell County, Sr., LB, 5-10, 175; Justin Gregory, McCreary Central, Sr., QB/S, 6-0, 160; Zac Ingle, Corbin, Sr., OT/DT, 6-5, 295; Harley Lambert, Corbin, Jr., G/DT, 6-3, 250; Luke Patterson, Casey County, Sr., QB/FS, 5-10, 170; Tanner Powers, Corbin, Sr., FB/LB, 5-9, 205; Nathaniel Prosser, McCreary Central, Sr., C/LB, 5-11, 240.

Class 3A District 7

1. Breathitt County (7-5): A 1-4 start in 2013 was very un-Breathitt like, but the Bobcats reeled off six straight wins to capture another district championship. Breathitt County remains the favorite with five starters back on both offense and defense.

2. Magoffin County (6-5): Scotty McCoy had a memorable first season as coach of the Hornets after taking over from his father, Chester. Magoffin earned the first home playoff game in school history and only the second winning season.

3. Morgan County (4-7): The Cougars lost a big senior class and will need big seasons from senior running back Hunter Adams and sophomore quarterback Hunter Collins to move back up in the district standings. Adams, a linebacker, and junior tackle Jared Branham are back to lead the defense.

4. Jackson County (6-5): The Generals return nine starters on offense, lead by senior halfback, Austin Hundley, senior fullback Cody Byrd, senior QB Jacob Hays, senior tackle Tanner Johnson and senior center Aaron Raider. The defense will feature Johnson at end and the linebacking trio of Hundley, Dakota Tillery and Byrd.

5. Knott Central (4-6): The four wins were the most for Knott since 1996, but four of the six losses came in the district, keeping the Patriots on the outside looking in when the playoffs arrived. With 13 seniors graduating, the Patriots will have a battle ahead of them to make it back it this year.

Preseason Favorite: Breathitt County

A second-round loss to Pike Central was a faster exit than they are accustomed to, but the Bobcats continued to rule the district and should remain there with several key players back, lead by junior halfback, James Fletcher Collins, who had 1,369 all-purpose yards last year with 17.9 yards per reception and 9.0 yards a carry. Collins could see more action at quarterback this year, alternating with senior Cory Grigsby. Senior Braxton Whitmore, who had 43 catches and nine touchdowns last year, is back at receiver. Senior Jordan Turner scored 13 times at running back, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Senior linebacker Michael Hildebrand, with 77 tackles last year, and Turner, a linebacker who added 75 tackles, are back to lead the defense.

On the way Up: Magoffin County

Building on last year's breakout season, which included the school's first home playoff game, will be the Hornets' goal this year with six starters back on both offense and defense. Senior quarterback Ryan Jenkins is a threat as both a runner and passer with 1,941 yards passing and 17 touchdowns to go with 590 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Senior Dalton Keeton is the top returning receiver with 29 catches for 590 yards and five touchdowns. Linebackers Gareth Gray, who had 125 tackles last year, and Josh Poe, who added 94 stops, are back to lead the defense.

Preseason player of the Year

James Fletcher Collins, Breathitt County, Jr., HB/S, 5-11, 170.

A tremendous all-around player, who coach Kyle Moore describes as "dynamic," Collins excels on offense, defense and special teams. He had 1,369 all-purpose yards as a runner. receiver and kick returner to help the Bobcats overcome a slow start last year and win their ninth straight district championship.

Players to Watch

Hunter Adams, Morgan County, Sr., RB/LB, 6-2, 210; Cody Byrd, Jackson County, Sr., FB/LB, 5-10, 185; Hunter Collins, Morgan County, So., QB, 6-0, 165; Cory Grigsby, Breathitt County, Sr., QB/LB, 6-0, 200; Austin Hundley, Jackson County, Sr., HB/FS, 5-10, 190; Ryan Jenkins, Magoffin County, Sr., QB, 6-3, 185; Dylon Johnson, Knott Central, Sr., HB/LB, 5-9, 185; Dalton Keeton, Magoffin County, Sr., WR/CB, 5-9, 180; Tyler Parks, Knott Central, Sr., G/T, 5-11, 275; Josh Poe, Magoffin County, Sr., T/LB, 6-3, 265; Jordan Turner, Breathitt County, Sr., TB/LB, 6-0, 195; Braxton Whitmore, Breathitt County, Sr., WR/LB, 6-3, 190.

Class A, District 8

1. Pikeville (11-2): Longtime frontrunner Pikeville remains the team to beat in the district.

2. Allen Central (2-9): Allen Central returns numerous young players at key positions.

3. South Floyd (3-8): South Floyd knocked off Phelps and a pair of non-district foes in its previous campaign.

4. Phelps (1-10): Phelps managed to defeat district foe Allen Central for its lone win in the 2013 season.

Preseason Favorite: Pikeville

Tradition-rich Pikeville played in its fourth straight regional championship game last season, losing to Raceland. Now, six starters are back on both offense and defense for the Panthers.

Quarterback Austin Charles and wide receiver Cody Estep, now seniors, connected 40-plus times in the 2013 season. Charles completed 82-of-127 passes for 1,589 yards and 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions. A go-to receiver, Estep had 43 receptions for 1,025 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

Ben Maynard (18 carries, 242 yards, five TDs; eight receptions, 151 yards, two TDs) will also take carries out of the backfield and haul in catches for the Panthers. Back from injury, junior running back Daric Pugh will also contribute. Fellow juniors Kory Stevens and Anthony Vanderback will aid the offensive attack as well.

Two starters-center Logan Coleman and right guard Isaac Lucas - return along with Pikeville's offensive line.

Defensively, Estep, Maynard, Pugh, Stevens, Vanderback, Lucas, Austin Salyer and Quenton Little are in the group of leading players back for the Pikeville football team.

Team on the Rise: Allen Central

Allen Central will not be short of talented young players in the 2014 season. Despite losing quarterback Cameron Hamilton to graduation, Allen Central returns multiple skill players along with experienced linemen and defensive standouts.

Offensively, leaders Trey Aldrich, Corey Davis and Steven Howard all return for the Rebels. Lineman Tyler Halbert is back on the field after suffering an injury.

Many Allen Central players will start on both sides of the ball. Defensively, linebacker Chase Soler and safety Jacob Barker are among Allen Central's additional key returnees.

The Rebels knocked off familiar foe South Floyd for their lone district win last season. Allen Central also posted a non-district victory over Jekins.

2014 Preseason Player Of The Year

Cody Estep, Pikeville, Sr., WR/S, 5-10, 175.

As a junior in 2013, Pikeville wide receiver Cody Estep ranked as one of the state's top pass catchers. Drawing heavy coverage from opposing teams, Estep delivered catch after catch. The productive Estep also rushed for one touchdown and scored five other TDs. From his defensive back position, Estep also took on the role of a leading defender for the Panthers.

Players To Watch

Trey Aldrich, Allen Central, Jr., WR/DB, 5-11, 165; Austin Charles, Pikeville, Sr., QB/DB, 6-1, 200; Brett Daniels, South Floyd, Sr., WR/DB, 5-11, 160; Corey Davis, Allen Central, Sr., RB/LB, 5-10, 205; Zack Francis, Phelps, Sr., QB/LB, 6-0, 180; Tyler Halbert, Allen Central, Sr., OL/DL, 5-10, 210; Steven Howard, Allen Central, So., RB/LB, 5-8, 185; Hunter Johnson, South Floyd, Jr., QB/DB, 5-10, 170; Mack Little, South Floyd, Sr., OL/DL, 6-0, 270; Ben Maynard, Pikeville, Sr., RB/DB, 5-11, 165; Daric Pugh, Pikeville, Jr., RB/LB, 6-0, 210; Anthony Vanderback, Pikeville, Jr., RB/DB, 6-2, 190.
