Your team vs. The World

And by world... I mean any team outside of Kentucky.

Since Johnson Central is my team... I will start. And as always, I'm sure somebody will correct me if something is wrong. And my PM box is cleared out, so all my haters can blow my inbox up.

1999: Tolsia, WV. 39-16 (W)
2000: Tolsia, WV. 44-0 (W)

1981: Wayne, WV. 21-0 (W)
1982: Wayne, WV. 14-7 (W)
1983: Wayne, WV. 21-20 (W)
1984: Wayne, WV. 0-6 (L)
1985: Wayne, WV. 18-12 (W)

2007: Wheelersburg, OH. 14-3 (W)

So by my count... JC has played 32 games against teams from out of 'state'. We have a 25-7 record against 17 different teams in our programs history.
That's playing teams from 6 different States and 1 different Country.

Good thread and subject.
Id have to dig out my old programs to see Whitley records against out of state teams.
I know they haven't played many out of state teams. You would think there would be a lot of TN teams they've played against being on the border, but its honestly not that many. Since 2000, of the top of my head, the only teams out of state I remember Whitley playing was a Cincinnati Aiken team a couple of times, which both were wins, and a loss to Morristown West last year. I really think that's all since 2000. I have a program here somewhere with Whitleys records against every program they've ever played.

There's no way I could find out that stuff. Maybe ole Bucslover can help. I know we have string of losses against Ironton with only one win. And then last year we won against Christian Academy of Knoxville and a win against Gallia Academy out of ohio. That's all I got.

Best Team on this list IMO was Archbishop Alter. Jeff Graham was their QB that year he went to Ohio ST and he played 11 seasons in the NFL as a WR. I have to wonder what Ronny Wells was thinking when he decided to play Alter??? He had a pretty good team that year but played IMO the one of the toughest schedules in JC history. JC was in the district with Russell and Belfry. Belfry had played in the 3A title game the year before and would make it to the carpet again in 86. Russell was a solid program that had won a 3A title in 78' Paintsville had Joey Coach and had played in the Class A title game the year before. Cumberland had Fred Maggard and won the Class A title that year. Throw in Ashland and Breathitt CO. I can't remember the other teams on JC's schedule that year. Playing Alter was IMO crazy. Did JC play Prestonsburg that year?

Would require way too much work lol! As you said Belfry only beat Ironton once, but I believe they used to play Coal Grove, Ohio and then of course they played Williamson and Matewan and others back in the day.

I don't know where I would even find this stuff. I know we have played Tolsia WV about 20 or more times and Wayne WV, Winfield WV, Cabell Midland, and Huntington High that I know of. Lawrence County is right on the border of WV and we have played a lot of teams from that state.

On a side note...

Johnson Central has NEVER played these teams in the regular season. And we've only played the bolded teams in the playoffs.

Ft. Thomas Highlands
Covington Catholic
St. Xavier
Male
DuPont Manual
Trinity
Beechwood
Lexington Catholic
Newport Central Catholic
Henry Clay
Lafayette
Bowling Green

I for one would LOVE to see a Home/Home series with Trinity, St. X or Male. Johnsonville would be rockin'!!!!

Would need some form of database.

In addition to the games you mentioned Belfry I know has played and beat Coal Grove, OH and they used to have a rivalry with Williamson, WV back in the Day in the King Coal Bowl.

The Ironton series would cause Belfry to have a losing record. The Pirates drew the Fighting Tigers when Ironton was still a powerhouse and the majority of the series was during Belfry's weakest stretch of the past 25 years.

The funny thing bout the Ironton series though is Belfry lone win was against arguably the Tigers' last powerhouse team. Belfry beat Ironton in 1999... that was Ironton's last trip to the Ohio State Finals and they featured the Harmon kid who went on to be a star at Michigan State. That 1999 Belfry team wasn't very strong either... finishing 8-4.

Ironton though started to decline but still got their revenge. The 2003 and 2004 Belfry teams went a combined 27-3 during their two title runs... 2 of those 3 losses...including the only loss in 2004 came at the hands of the Tigers in a pair of games that Ironton actually dominated.

Also played Ceredo-Kenova and Man in WV. I'd have to dig out my book, but I think there were some games against Virginia teams in the 60's. I want to say Haysi and Grundy. But I can't recall any outside games other than WV, OH, TN, and VA.

Just wait for the Pike Co Bowl program to come out it gives our all time record individually against every school we have played if I'm not mistaken.

Here's some info for the Belfry Pirates Vs. One out of state team:

Belfry Vs. Williamson (WV)

WHS lead the series, (24-20-3)

First Game was September 18th 1932
Final Game was October 28th 1988

Belfry's first win in the series didn't come until 1961, at WHS, 27-25
Williamson's final win in the series was 1973, At WHS, 22-16

From 1932-1940, it was the first game of the season for the Pirates and Wolfpack.

The Three Ties occurred in '54,'71, and '74.

Series wasn't played in: '41,'42,'43,'44,'45,'46,'49,'50,'51,'52, and '53

Sure do wish I would've been around to seen atleast one of these games....

Clay Co was a district champion that year. Belfry barely beat them in the playoffs 6 to 0.

Who were the backs for Johnson Central in 86?

Don Carlo Wrote:Who were the backs for Johnson Central in 86?

Emmitt Gamble, Wayne Arrowood and Paul Caudill. Paul was the FB in the T formation. Jimmy Daniels was the QB for about half of the season. JD got knocked out a few times that year. He tried to play the next season but concussions have took out a many a good QB at all levels of football. I always felt big Brian Hall should have got more time in the backfield that year. There was a bunch of guys from this team that went on to play College football. Brent Anderson, Chris Gamble, Bill Adams, Lee Hamilton Steve Estep, Chris Deaton, just to name a few. A couple of those guys got college National title rings. I am not meaning to knock Ronny Wells at all but IMO Jim Matney might have beat anybody in the state with the 86 group at JC. I always liked Ronny Wells but the fact of the matter was he lacked the experience needed to win. The next year 87' Matney beat Wells over at Sheldon Clark with a group of kids that hadn't seen a football 2 years before. The 87' JC @ Sheldon Clark game is the famous game were a penalty that would have prevent a game winning kickoff return got declined. I was at that game and had a clear view of what happened and the penalty was declined by JC.
