Johnson Central goes to top of Super Seven

By RICK GREENE / The Independent

A new team has taken the top spot of The Independent’s Super Seven high school football poll.

Jim Matney’s Johnson Central team, which has outscored its first three opponents by an average of 36-7, moves to No. 1 after Russell’s 24-21 triple-overtime loss to Ashland on Saturday.

In Friday’s win over Logan (W.Va.), Shane Grimm rushed for 139 yards and a score, but Golden Eagles quarterback J.K. Ratliff left the game with a broken collarbone. Johnson Central is ranked No. 8 in Kentucky’s Class 3A poll, which was released Monday.

Raceland comes in at No. 2 after its convincing 46-7 win at East Carter.

Quarterback Scott Grizzle connected on 11 of his 17 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams scored 26 points in the first quarter, led 39-0 at halftime and were never threatened. The Rams moved to No. 7 in the Kentucky Class A poll.

Ashland moves up a spot to No. 3 after its win over Russell.

Junior running back Matt Thomas exploded for 198 rushing yards as Ashland outgained the Red Devils on the ground 270-176. Following its season-opening loss to Raceland, the Tomcats have rebounded with victories against Belfry and Russell, top-ranked teams in Class 2A.

Ashland also made its first appearance in the Kentucky Class 3A poll, coming in at No. 10.

Russell slips from the top spot to No. 4.

Mr. Football candidate Kasey Clark still put up good numbers with 150 yards on 32 carries for Russell, which fell to 1-1 and lost to Ashland for the first time since 2003. Russell’s top-ranking in Kentucky Class 2A was erased and the Devils fell to No. 3 behind Mercer County and Louisville Western.

Boyd County remains at No. 5 after its 19-12 win against visiting Pike County Central.

After taking a 19-0 halftime lead, the Lions had to hold on for their second victory against one loss. Gatlin Barker led Boyd County with 58 yards on 12 carries.

Greenup County was off last week and is still No. 6.

The Musketeers have used the off week to prepare for Raceland, their backyard rival that won last year’s game 22-14.

West Carter makes its first appearance in the Super Seven this season at No. 7.

After a season-opening loss to an improved Bath County team, the Comets have posted wins over Nicholas County and Lewis County.

West Carter visits Rowan County next week before opening district play at home against Powell County.
