Game Report Hurley, Va. 36 East Ridge 14
#1
East Ridge falls to Hurley, Virginia, 36-14.

This was one of those games that the score really does not indicate how close these two teams come to be equal in talent.

Three events took place in this one that changed the tone of the game and left one team looking like they won easily and the other team saying what if?

Things got started in this one with Trey Oliver from Hurley showing off his speed, with an 18-yard run. Mr. Hurley easily looked a step or two faster than anyone else on the field all game long. The run occurred just fifteen second into the game.

The East Ridge defense led by Jacob Skeens hit Oliver for a one-yard loss forcing a fourth and two. East Ridge seemed to learn from that first run, that they would have to gang tackle the speedy back and wrap him up.

The Hurley defense would return the favor when they held the East Ridge runner for no gain. Chris Hardin was the Rebel player who got to the runner, with 8:33 left in the opening quarter.

With 6:42 left in the scoreless first quarter, Hurley ran a sprint out with their quarterback, Nick Gibson but the Warriors Jacob Skeens and Dalton Smith was not fooled as they stopped the play for no gain.

Then with 5:23 left in the quarter, Chris Spencer had his number called on a reverse play, but Michael Fields and Warrior teammate Elijah Eplimg stopped that play for no gain.

Hurley was able to avoid disaster when Oliver fumbled a punt but his teammate, Nick Gibson pounced on it, with 2:29 left in the quarter that seen defense rule.

Oliver got the 2nd quarter started off, with a nice eleven-yard run.

Caleb Skeens would make a nice tackle on the Hurley quarterback, Nick Gibson holding him for no gain, with 11:19 left in the half.

Gibson would throw the ball up for Chris Hardin, who was covered like a blanket, but the talented receiver leaped up and made the big catch.

Then with 9:26 left in the scoreless first half Dillon Bailey powered in for the score, from nine yards out. A two-point try was stopped by East Ridge leaving the score, 6-0.

Jacob Clark would bring the Warriors crowd to life, with a 72-yard run, if not a great play from Gibson the game would have been locked at, six. Gibson came from no where to save the touchdown.

Caleb Skeens, would tie things up with a two yard run, with 8:35 left in the half. The point after try was wide leaving things locked at, six.

Oliver had his number called, with 8:13 showing on the clock and the warriors were waiting for him as Caleb Skeens and partner in crime, Epling teamed up to stuff him for no gain.

The Rebels tried another running play at the 6:21
mark but once again Caleb Skeens was got to the back, this time for a four-yard loss.

Gibson would complete a pass to Oliver, who broke a tackle and blazed a 58-yard trail to the end zone to put Hurley up six points, A two-point conversion increase the lead to, 14-6. The half still had 4:58 left in it.

Ethan Duffy got to Jacob Skeens for an eleven-yard loss with 2:08 showing on the clock.

With 45.3 left in the half nobody knew at the time this was when the bottom started falling out for East Ridge. Michael Fields was wide opened and the ball was thrown right to him, but he was unable to bring it in for the catch, a catch that he would have scored on.

In the 2nd half there would be three events that occurred that really continued the down fall of East Ridge. Two players would go out with an injury on two different plays and a blown non- call by a ref standing right by the play that would have given the Warriors possession of the ball when they really needed it. From there things went down hill like a wild fire out of control.

9:10 showed on the clock when a bad snap caused the East Ridge quarterback to fumble the ball, but Trey Little looked to have saved the day when he recovered it, But as Little tried to make something out of nothing he too put the ball on the ground, this time a Hurley player pounced on it.

Just a little over a minute later Hurley was able to make the Warriors pay, when Gibson hit Oliver for a 17-yards score. The Warriors were able to regroup as they stopped the two-point conversion try, leaving the score 20-6.

4:45 was left in the third, when East Ridge got a nice catch by 6-3 Jacob Chaney, who made a nice run after making the catch but before he was brought to the ground he coughed the ball up and Tyler Coleman pounced on it for Hurley.

With 3:23 showing on the third quarter clock Andrew Hylton got into the backfield and stopped Ethan Duty for a four-yard loss.

East Ridge looked to have taken the ball from the Hurley player at the nine yard line but the ref standing right in from of the play did not make the call. The Rebels used that break to score on a run from Nelson Mullins, from nine-yards out. Dillon Bailey easy converted a two-point run to push the lead to, 28-6.

The quarter ended with Steven Stacy recovering a fumbled pitch by Jacob Skeens.

With 8:38 left in the contest Barry Young over threw a Wide opened Chaney, as things contiued to go down hill for the Warriors.

East Ridge continued to play hard even with the game already decided, and with 3:55 that play paid off, when Dalton Smith pounced on a fumble by Hurley.

Hurley would score one final time, with 1:52 left in the game. Dillon Bailey would score on a two-yard run and a two-point conversion run by Brady Justice made the score 36-6.
