Lloyd Memorial 36, Cov. Holy Cross 35
#1
This game is one both teams will remember for a very long time. Very intense, very competitive, just a great game to be a part of in the stands, on the field and in between. May have been the best game in NKY

Lloyd scores a touchdown with 33 seconds left to make it a one point game. Lloyd QB Dexter Smith convinced his coaches to go for 2, and converted to take the lead. Holy Cross got the ball down to 40, but was intercepted in the endzone on the last play of the game.

Lloyd QB Dexter Smith threw for 244 yards and 2 TDs, and ran for 87 yards and 2 TDs. Tomi Mejolagbe caught five passes for 166 yards and a TD. Holy Cross gained 498 yards on offense, Jalen Beal ran for 227 yards and 3 TDs, but Holy Cross had 6 turnovers and gave up a kick return for a touchdown. Congrats Lloyd on a huge, and well deserved win, they certainly earned it.

With Lloyd trailing Holy Cross by a single point with 38 seconds left in the game, Juggernaut coach Josh Stratton had resigned himself to settling for the extra point against his team’s longtime nemesis.

But his quarterback had other ideas.

Dexter Smith convinced Stratton to put the game in his hands and the senior signal caller rewarded his coach’s faith by tossing a two-point conversion to Zack Riddle to propel the Juggernauts past Holy Cross, 36-35, and end a long string of futility against the Indians.

“We were ready to go for (the extra point) and Dexter came over and told me, “No, we’re going for two. We can make it,” said Stratton, whose Juggernauts are 5-1. “I trust him and if he says he can do it, then I believe him.”

The victory is Lloyd’s first over the Indians (1-5) in seven meetings since the teams became district rivals in 2007. That includes losing to Holy Cross by a combined score of 103-19 in the teams’ last two matchups.

The defending state champion Indians gained 498 yards of total offense and held a 12-minute advantage in time of possession, but were hampered by six turnovers. Despite those miscues, Holy Cross led 35-28 after a 49-yard Jalen Beal touchdown run with under two minutes left in the game.

Already burned by one Juggernaut kickoff return for a touchdown, Holy Cross opted to squib the ensuing kickoff, which gave Lloyd the ball at the 50-yard line with 90 seconds left on the clock.

Smith needed only 60 of those ticks to march his team down the field and scramble into the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown run. Smith followed with the winning two-point conversion to Riddle on a rollout play with a run/pass option.

It didn’t take Smith long to figure out which of those options he was going to go with.

“(Holy Cross) was in man (coverage) and right after the snap (Riddle) broke and he was wide open,” Smith said. “I threw it and a (Holy Cross defender) tipped it and that was the longest two seconds of my life waiting for (Riddle) to catch it.”

Smith finished with 244 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-20 passing. He ran for two more scores on his way to 87 ground yards.

Senior wide receiver Tomi Mejolagbe was Smith’s favorite target, collecting five catches for 166 yards. That included an 83-yard grab in the first quarter for the game’s first score.

Beal led the Indians with 227 yards on 33 carries. The junior running back scored three touchdowns on runs of 32, 16 and 49 yards.

“Their offensive line was opening holes and he ran the ball right down our throat,” Stratton said.
