Towels is redshirting

I know he is redshirting, my question is what did Joker not see in Towels to make him start the two clowns he is starting (Smith, Newton). I know it is a jump from HS to College, but Towels has more talent in one leg than both those guys combined.

Smith is doing an excellent job at qb IMO
