Campbell County's Heilman captures hurdle title
#1
It was a challenging day for area girls at Saturday’s Class 3A state track and field championships, where Campbell County was the highest finishing team in 14th place and Camels senior Christina Heilman was the area’s lone champion.

Heilman won the 300-meter hurdle crown with a finishing time of 44.64 seconds. That was nearly a second faster than runner-up Tatiyana Dean (45.41) of Tates Creek at University of Louisville’s Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park.

Heilman also ran a leg on the Camels’ second-place 1,600-meter relay team with Brooke Buckler, Faith Roaden and Molly Kitchen. Senior Brianna Schraer finished seventh in the discus after missing the event last year with an injury. Campbell County totaled 22 points and finished well behind team champion Louisville Assumption (63.5).

“We had some things happen but we still had a good day, especially with Christina getting her goal,” Camels coach Brandon Napier said. “She was second the last two years and she finally got a win.”

A crushing blow for the Camels came in the 800 relay, a race they won twice at state in 2009 and 2010. Campbell County finished a disappointing 10th as leg-runners Heilman and Kitchen were unable to secure a third state title in the event.

“We didn’t do anything wrong,” Napier said. “Other teams were just faster. That was a fast race this year.”

The Camels’ 3,200 relay team of Roaden, Jennah Flairty, Taylor Robinson and Haylee Rose placed sixth. “We took the best we could get,” the coach said.

The rest of the area’s representation finished in the bottom half of the team standings. Ryle (12 points) placed 23rd. Notre Dame Academy (8) finished in a three-way tie for 25th. Simon Kenton (7) was 28th, followed by Boone County (4) in 29th and Dixie Heights (3) in 31st place.

Local individuals had a difficult time cracking the top five. Two occurrences came in the same race when Simon Kenton’s Christina Cook placed third in the 400 meters followed by fourth-place Kiana Lee of Ryle.

Ryle’s Ashlee Howe tied for fourth in the high jump. Boone County’s Jessica Jones finished fifth in the 100 hurdles.http://nky.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...305190062/
