Highlands' tennis looks to repeat in 10th Region
#1
Highlands' tennis teams are attempting to repeat as 10th Region champions with first-year head coaches, beginning Saturday at Harrison County. Opening-round action starts at 8 a.m.

Girls' coach Kris Laskey wants to continue a trend that began long before she took over the program. The Bluebirds are seeking an eighth straight regional team title. Coach Collin Shadwell is hoping to make it two in a row for the boys.

Individuals are playing for singles and doubles berths in the state tournaments May 17-19 in Lexington. Regional quarterfinals are scheduled for Monday, followed by Tuesday semifinals and Wednesday finals. Team champions move on to a sectional round of the state tournament at the home of the 10th Region winner.

"Hopefully, we'll pick up where (former coach) Shelby Jones left off," said Laskey, whose lineup is bolstered by two daughters, including three-time defending regional singles champion, freshman Meredith Laskey. "Even though we're going for eight as a team, we haven't had a doubles champion that whole time. Our goal this year is to get a win."

If seeds hold, the Bluebirds would attain the doubles final with some extra sister power. Highlands junior Hannah Laskey and eighth-grader Lexi Herman are the top-seeded tandem and teammates Abby Herman and Sarah Hoffmann are No. 2.

"If seeds hold true, this could be a lot of fun," coach Laskey said.

Bluebirds junior Mallory Martz is the No. 4 singles seed.

Highlands' boys are led by No. 1 singles seed and defending champion Drew Freyberger, No. 4 Ben Emery and the No. 1 doubles team of Atlee Mitchell and Aran Coughlan.

"I'd love to see both in the final," Coach Shadwell said of his singles entries.

In the Ninth Region, Covington Catholic is shooting for an 11th consecutive boys' team crown and Notre Dame Academy is aiming for its 17th straight girls' title.

The boys' tournament begins at 8 a.m. today at Boone Woods and Cooper. Monday quarterfinals, Tuesday semifinals and Wednesday finals are at Boone Woods.

CovCath freshman Austin Hussey is the top singles seed and Villa Madonna's Deuce Gibson is No. 2. Scott's A.J. Berk is No. 3 and Preston Kohls from Holy Cross No. 4. CovCath's Scott Drees and Stephen Schafer comprise the No. 1 doubles tandem and teammates Ryan Cunningham and Joe Kendall are No. 2.

The Ninth Region girls' event is at Lloyd. First-round action starts at noon Monday. Quarterfinal play begins Tuesday, followed by Wednesday semifinals. The finals are scheduled for Friday.

Notre Dame senior Madie Cook, the No. 1 singles seed, is defending champion and looking for her third title. Dixie Heights' Brooke Warden is No. 2, Scott's Summer Manning No. 3 and the Pandas' Kelli Taylor No. 4.

Notre Dame also has the top doubles seeds. The team of Katriona Shaughnessy and Alyssa Kennedy are No. 1. Beth Slay and Abby Roebker are No. 2.

The Highlands girls shouldn't have much trouble, just like they haven't in any since being moved into the 10th region.
On the boys side, Montgomery Co and George Rogers Clark are their top challengers.
Montgomery has the 2 seed in singles, and the 1 and 3 seeds in doubles.
GRC has the 3 and 7 in singles and the 4 in doubles.
