Man's foot amputated after being shot during game celebration
#1
A Louisville man's foot was amputated after he was wounded in a shooting incident early Tuesday at South Limestone and Virginia Avenue in Lexington, police said.

The victim's name was not immediately available, and police were looking for the person who shot him.

Police also said the shooting victim has "outstanding felony warrants" pending from another state, said police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.

Lt. J.J. Lombardi said the incident occurred about 2:15 a.m. near the area where celebrations were going on after the University of Kentucky's NCAA national championship victory over Kansas.

The victim was in a vehicle with some friends, he said.

"They were up here for the celebration," Lombardi said.

Roberts said friends of the victim stated that they had stopped to talk with some girls who were standing in the crowd on the sidewalk.

According to Lombardi, the victim got into an argument with another man who was on the street, then he stepped outside the vehicle, where the disagreement continued.

"The suspect then brandished a handgun and fired multiple rounds," Lombardi said. "One of the rounds struck the victim in the foot, and three other rounds struck the vehicle."

Police said the suspect fled.

According to Roberts, officers combed the area, using search dogs, but were not successful.

Lombardi said the victim was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, just across the street, where his wounded foot eventually was amputated as a result of the injuries.

A description of the shooting suspect was not immediately available.

No one else was injured, and no other vehicles were hit, police said.

Lombardi said the incident apparently was related to the post-game celebration.

"They were in the general vicinity of the celebration that was going on down around Elizabeth Street, and were just leaving that vicinity," Lombardi said.

Fire department spokesman Ed Davis was in the area when the shooting occurred.

"I was probably standing about 40 feet from it," he said.

Davis said a fire engine was involved in a minor collision with a pickup at Lime and Virginia about that time and he was there to do a report.

"I was standing in front of my truck with a police officer exchanging some information, and we heard some yelling and looked across the street," he said. "A guy began firing shots, and the person who was shot was between us and him so the shots were coming our direction. It was on the sidewalk directly across from us.

"We could see the guy shooting; we could see the muzzle flashes; the gun was pointed in our direction.

Throughout the night, firefighters answered almost 60 fire calls, Davis said, 55 of them involving "nuisance fires" started by people celebrating the Wildcats' victory. Most of those involved couches or trash that had been set on fire, he said.

Two garages also caught fire on State Street, Davis said, and one was heavily damaged. The second garage was damaged slightly by a firecracker that struck the eave of its roof and then started a small fire, he said.

Davis said the department also made 25 ambulance runs during the evening, all of them involving minor injuries except for the shooting.

Over 12,000 people were on twitter with a link to the Lexington Police Scanner. I listened from around 12:30-3:00. Pure gold. A little after 2 you just herd "Shots fired! Shots Fired! Man down!".

Some of the lighter quotes were:

"Two nude male suspects on Kentucky Ave...." A few minutes later "They've either found some pants or gone back inside"

"just let them let off the fireworks as long as they're not shooting them at people"

"there's a party going on the middle of an intersection...just let it go"

"They are trying to put out the fire with rocks and bottles"

"suspect is surfing on top of a car right now"

"We're just going to let that burn" Lexington: Where there are bigger problems than public fires in crowded areas.

"possible shooting victim somehow got up and started walking down the street!"

"Large white male in jeans...possibly a shooting victim." Wait, what!?

Did that Dispatcher just call out an 11-26?! ABANDONED BICYCLE?! REALLY!?!

"We just had a flash mob. Everybody said they're gonna shoot everybody."

"Forget it that ones not in the roadway its in their driveway let them deal with that"

"Uh We have a partially nude male with a propane tank"

"theyre trying to break a tree."

"There's a mob heading north breaking store windows right now."

"unknown male subject was walking westbound, disappeared...don't know if they fell in a manhole or what"

"Complainant says there is a 4wheeler in her back yard and she doesn't know whose it is"

"WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR CITATIONS DAMMIT!"

"We got a woman in a tree, throwin empty beer containers yellin "**** Kansas" request backup"

"Suspect described as a white male in blue t-shirt." He should be pretty easy to find then, eh?

“Can you get a truck down here for another couch?” “Sure you need a sanitation truck?” “No a fire truck. Actually the garage is on fire now too. Yeah a fire truck for sure.”
