Kentucky's Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist receive multiple honors
#1
University of Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis was named 2012 College Basketball Player of the Year by the Sporting News on Tuesday.

Davis is only the second Kentucky freshman to receive one of the national Player of the Year awards in program history. John Wall received three national player of the year honors in 2010 from Rivals.com, Yahoo Sports and The Rupp Trophy.

Davis helped lead Kentucky to a 30-1 record, including a 16-0 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The Wildcats open play in the SEC Tournament in New Orleans on Friday.

Joining Davis on the Sporting News' list of first-team All-Americans were Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Draymond Green of Michigan State, Thomas Robinson of Kansas and Jared Sullinger of Ohio State.

Kentucky freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was named to the second team along with Marcus Denmon of Missouri, Jae Crowder of Marquette, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Tyler Zeller of North Carolina.

Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist — the only freshmen to be named to the first, second or third teams — were also named to the Sporting News' All-Freshman Team, along with Austin Rivers of Duke, Tony Wroten of Washington and Cody Zeller of Indiana.

Kansas' Bill Self was named Coach of the Year.

The Sporting News named Kentucky's John Calipari its SEC Coach of the Year. Davis won SEC player and freshman of the year.
