Highlands girls team has a new coach and for the first time took part of the team to compete in an indoor meet. With only 12 runners (several running first race ever),they were able to place 4th as a team. Some very good looking new young runners this year. When the whole team gets together for outdoor season, they will be a strong contender for a 5th straight state championship. They have a couple good runners to replace from graduation, but, return a lot of talent and have some good younger kids joining the team.

For Rockcastle's girls team, one girl, Michaela Hunter scored three firsts and a second. Yes, that's 38 points by one girl of Rockcastle's total of 76 points. Now, who knows how some of the other girls would have fared on those jumping events as only one girl per event per team is allowed and Rockcastle has some other very talented athletes as well, but, I thought that her performance was pretty incredible. She placed first in all of the jumps which included the long jump, high jump and triple jump and she got off to a bad start in the 55 meter dash and was gaining on the leader of that race when she placed second. With another ten meters, she would have won that one as well. Michaela also plays basketball, but with Rockcastle's early exit from the playoffs, she was of great value to Coach Brummet on this day.
Ben Lake of Rockcastle was a one boy team finishing third at shotput and garnering the six points.
Congratulations to all of the Rockcastle kids and especially the girls. Both girls teams, middle school and high school won their respective championships in Middle School and High School at Mason Dixon.

I meant to mention Hunter in my earlier post. She had a great day and will be fun to watch this outdoor season. Rock gets a lot more numbers out for indoor track then any other school; it will be fun to see how they stack up to the other teams when everyone is at full strength in outdoor season.
