Lincoln County officials have postponed tonight's girls 12th Region Tournament semifinals in anticipation of today's forecast of severe weather.
The tournament has been pushed back one day, with the semifinals now scheduled for Saturday and the championship set for Sunday at Lincoln.
Travis Leffew, Lincoln's assistant athletic director, said the decision to postpone tonight's games was made about 11 a.m. today, although no watches or warnings had yet been issued.
"We called it off based on predictions from The Weather Channel," Leffew said. "Some of the other regions had postponed their games, and we thought for the safety of the kids it was the best thing today," Leffew said.
He added that Mercer County officials told him they didn't want players and other students traveling on buses during the kind of severe weather that is forecast for today. A National Weather Service statement issued late this morning said severe storms that could produce tornadoes are expected to arrive in the area around 4-5 p.m., which would be around the time that many people would be traveling to the games.
The semifinals will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday with the Mercer-Lincoln game, followed by the Wayne County-Casey County game at about 7:30. The winners will play in the championship at 3 p.m. Sunday.
