MOUNT VERNON — The Casey County girls won their first district championship in three years Thursday night, coming from behind to defeat Pulaski County 57-46 in the girls 47th District Tournament final at Rockcastle County.
Jasmine Johnson had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Casey (17-14), which trailed 27-21 at halftime but opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take a 32-30 lead.
The lead changed hands twice more after that — and seven times in all — and the Rebels went in front to stay with an 8-0 run that included six points by Johnson and a layup by Tiara Cochran that gave them a 40-36 lead with 1 minute, 38 seconds left in the third quarter.
After Emily Forbes hit a 3-point shot for Pulaski (21-11), Casey scored another seven straight to take a 47-39 with 5:19 remaining. The Rebels then began taking time off the clock, and they hit eight of 14 free throws in the final 4 minutes.
Casey's defense forced Pulaski into 25 turnovers, including 14 in the second half, as the Rebels beat the Maroons for the third time this season.
Lakken Miller scored 12 points and Sarah Beard had 10 for Casey, which was the top seed in the district but had lost eight of 11 games since star center Megan Pittman suffered a torn knee ligament in a Jan. 17 win at Pulaski.
Pittman had a successful surgery to repair her knee earlier Thursday, and she sent word to her teammates after the game that she would try to greet them at the school when they returned to Liberty.
Brittany Warren led Pulaski with 20 points, but she had only one point in the final 12 minutes.
This is Casey's second district title in seven years in its current district.

MOUNT VERNON — They would have liked nothing more than for their fallen teammate to have been with them. But for the Casey County girls, the next-best thing was winning without her.
Left for dead after star center Megan Pittman was lost to a knee injury, Casey came back to win its first district championship in three years Thursday night.
The Rebels defeated Pulaski County 57-46 to win the girls 47th District Tournament, and they said they derived a great deal of satisfaction from doing so after it appeared their season was lost.
“People really doubted us, that we could do it without Megan. And Megan was one of our key players, and we lost her, but everybody stepped up and proved what we can do,” Casey guard Jasmine Johnson said. “I just like proving people wrong, and that’s what we did.”
Pittman wasn’t at Rockcastle County for the game, but she wasn’t far from her teammates’ thoughts. She had successful surgery to repair her torn knee ligament earlier in the day, and she sent word to them after the game that she hoped to be at the school to greet them when they returned to Liberty.
Casey (17-14) has traveled a hard road since Pittman suffered her second knee injury in 18 months in a Jan. 17 game at Pulaski, losing eight of its 10 regular-season games following her injury, including five in a row before its semifinal win over Somerset on Monday.
“This was really one of the most satisfying district championships we ever had, because really, even though we were the No. 1 seed, we were probably the fourth-best team,” Casey coach Randy Salyers said.
Johnson led Casey with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and she had 17 and eight in the second half, when the Rebels took control of the game after they had fallen behind in the first half.
They trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter before opening the second half with an 11-3 run, and they outscored Pulaski 15-3 over a 7-minute stretch to go up by eight early in the fourth quarter.
Defense was a key to Casey’s comeback, as the Rebels forced Pulaski into 14 second-half turnovers and 25 in all.
“The first half we didn’t press at all, and the second half we picked our spots to press and, I think, caught them off guard,” Salyers said. “And one of the biggest keys, I felt like, was we switched Lakken Miller on to (Pulaski guard and leading scorer) Brittany Warren. Lakken’s a little bit taller and a little bit more athletic, and I felt like she contested a lot of shots by Warren.”
Warren led Pulaski (21-11) with 20 points, but Miller and her teammates held her to a single point over the final 12 minutes.
“Lakken did a great job on her in the second half, and Christin (Terry) and Katie (Douglas) did a good job on (Pulaski center Mariah) Meeks,” Johnson said.
Meeks scored 17 points, but only seven in the second half. Casey frequently made her earn her points at the free-throw line, and she missed six of her 13 attempts.
Casey made 24 of its 32 free throws — Pulaski committed 27 fouls — as Johnson went 8 for 9, Sarah Beard was 7 for 11 and Miller was 4 for 6. The Rebels were just 8 for 14 in the final 4 minutes, but that was enough to hold off the Maroons, who were 5 for 11 over the same span.
Johnson scored five straight points in the first minute of the second half to kick off a run that gave Casey a 32-30 lead.
The lead changed hands twice more after that — and seven times in all — and the Rebels went in front to stay with an 8-0 run that included six points by Johnson and a layup by Tiara Cochran that gave them a 40-36 lead with 1:38 left in the third quarter.
After Emily Forbes hit a 3-point shot for Pulaski, Casey scored another seven straight to take a 47-39 lead with 5:19 to go, then began milking the clock.
“That was hard. You get a little excited once it gets down to a minute or so,” Johnson said. “We ran a lot off the clock, and I was pretty stoked about that.”
Miller scored 12 points and Beard had 10 for Casey, which won despite shooting just 27.1 percent (13 for 48) from the field. The Rebels hit just four of 26 3-point shots, including three of 19 in the first half.
“Coach got us fired up (at halftime). He told us what we were doing wrong and what we needed to do to win,” Cochran said. “We just played our game, played good defense and kept our heads up.”
