Traveling to Owensboro over the weekend for the regional swim meet, the Calloway County Lakers returned from the trip empty handed after falling just short of their bid to send swimmers to state.
Still, after competiting against 500 swimmers from 30 different schools, head coach Amy Workman said her kids have nothing to be ashamed of. With multiple health issues plaguing them throughout the year, they showed resiliency once again she noted.
“The meet was great, absolutely wonderful,” Workman said. “Every kid, every swimmer had their best time and dropped time. We've had a lot of injuries this year, but, like I said before, those kids are resilient. Everyone of them swam their best, dropped time and had fun and that's the main thing. I'm proud of the kids and we're looking forward to next year.”
For the guys, Marco O’ Bryan found the most success at the meet, picking up top-10 finishes in both his events, the 100 free (8th, :52.51) and 200 free (5th 1:55. 37), followed closely by Andy Anderson (23rd, :58.06) and Phillips Vilardo (33rd, 1:01.66) in the 100 free. Anderson and Vilardo also competed in the 50 free where they finished 29th (:26.25) and 34th (27:37) respectively.
On the girls side, Natalie Hahs provided a big meet, advancing to Saturday in both of her events, the 200 IM (14th, 2:34.87) and the 500 free (10th, 5:56.85). Other top swimmers include Katie Allen, who finished 7th in the 50 free (:32.34) followed closely by Kaylee Roberson in 42nd (:33.70) and Darington Prescott, who clocked in top 30 finishes in both the 200 IM (28th, 2:50. 43) and 100 breast (22nd, 1:26.04). In the 200 free, April Meadows and Claire Umstead checked in at 23rd (2:30.96) and 43rd (2:49.93) respectively.
Meadows (36th, 1:09.54) and Umstead (63rd, 1:20.43) also competed in 100 free where they were joined by Leah Feldhaus, who finished between the two at 44th in 1:13.25. Feldhaus would also compete in the 100 breast where she would finish in 43rd with a time of 1:36.39 while Roberson and Allen would close out the 100 back with 36th (1:25.95) and 38th (1:26.26) place finishes respectively.
Overall though, the girls’ team may have made the biggest impact in the relays where Workman praised their performance.
Finishing with a 16th place (2:21.92) showing, the 200 IM team of Hahs (back), Prescott (breast), Meadowns (butterfly) and Roberson (free) led the way. They were followed by 18th place finishes in the 200 (2:10.60) and 400 free (4:43.83).
That said, though the season will end shorter than she’d hoped, Workman noted how much she enjoyed the time with the kids and what they were able to accomplish
"They're just a great group of kids. I treat them like my very own and I know it drives them crazy but they drive me crazy," Workman said with a laugh. "but I love them and everyone one of them brought something to the table. I am so blessed to coach them. They teach me something every day.”
Still, as the season comes to close, Workman also mentioned that Murray wil be in their thoughts and prayers as they make the trip to Louisville.
“One of the things we want to do is wish Murray High School good luck and Godspeed,” she said. “We're praying for them and are with them 100 percent. I know they're going to represent our community well at state. Congratulations also to Lauren Erickson and Connor McKenna as well.”.
