#1
The body found Tuesday in the old Alexander Hotel on Public Square has been identified as belonging to attorney and former UK basketball player James “Jim” Dinwiddie.

Dinwiddie, 63, died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a press release from the Leitchfield Police Department.

Police do not expect any foul play in relation to the incident.

His body was discovered at around 10 a.m. by his secretary, who called the police to alert them as to what she had discovered in an upstairs bedroom of the partially renovated hotel where Dinwiddie worked and lived.

Prior to the discovery, the Judicial Center was abuzz as it was noted that Dinwiddie, who was scheduled to represent several cases, was absent from court. It was generally noted throughout the early morning that this was uncharacteristic of the man, and confusion persisted as to the reason for his absence.

Following the 911 call, LPD Detective Kevin Smith headed up the case with assistance from Glenn and other officers. Grayson County EMS also responded to the scene, as did Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, Hudson and Deputy Coroners Howard Tomes and Marcus Clark.

According to Smith, the identity of the deceased was not immediately released in order to give authorities time to contact immediate family members.

Dinwiddie, who grew up in Grayson County, attended University of Kentucky, where he played basketball under legendary coach Adolph Rupp in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

Listed as a 6’4” guard who wore jersey number 10, Dinwiddie scored 277 points during his 72 games with the Wildcats.

In 1971, He was drafted by the Philadelphia 79ers in the 10th round of the NBA drafts.

Rather than continuing on with basketball, however, Dinwiddie returned to Grayson County to build a successful law practice, which he continued until the time of his death.

Funeral arrangements for James “Jim” Dinwiddie will be handled by Watson and Hunt Funeral Directors, of Leitchfield.

His family released a statement to the media on Thursday morning, which reads as follows:

"James Frederick Dinwiddie, age 63, sadly for reasons not entirely clear, by his own hands and on his own terms, decided that ti was time to move on.
