Friday nightâs battle between Western High and Doss for the Class 4-A District 4 title proved not just a test of skill, but also of endurance.
The visiting Warriors defeated the Dragons 18-12 in four overtimes. The game lasted three hours and 15 minutes.
Junior running back Doreon Gordon scored two of Westernâs touchdowns.
Itâs the fourth straight district title for the Warriors.
âWe dug ourselves in a little hole early in the season; we werenât playing very well,â Western coach Lavell Boyd said. âBut the guys stepped up and it was a team effort tonight.
âBoth teams have very good defenses. We struggled a little on offense,â he said.
With the game tied at 6 in the third overtime, Doss (2-7) sophomore quarterback Jerry Coleman handed off to senior Darryl Lewis, who ran the ball 5 yards for a touchdown.
The Dragons were unable to convert the extra point.
Warriorsâ quarterback Javon Armstrong carried the ball into the end zone from the 5-yard line on third down to tie the game at 12.
Western (5-4) wasnât able to convert on the two-point conversion try.
The Warriors went ahead 18-12 on Gordonâs 8-yard run on second down.
Doss moved the ball to the 9, but on third down, the Western defense dropped the Dragons back to the 20. They stuffed a running play on fourth down to secure the win.
The Dragons lost senior quarterback Craig Williams to an ankle injury just before halftime. He was unable to return.
âThese kids fight,â Doss coach LaKunta Farmer said. âThey fight every day. Thereâs a lot of things that donât go their way, a lot of things that donât go our way, but thatâs life.â
Doss took a 6-0 lead with 1:11 left in the first quarter thanks to a key defensive play.
On first down from the Western 49-yard line, quarterback Mark Whiteâs pass was intercepted by senior defensive back Rex White, who ran it into the end zone for a touchdown. The Dragonsâ 2-point conversion attempt failed.
Armstrong led the Warriors on a nine-play drive that led to a touchdown with 2:11 left in the first half.
On third and 10 from the Doss 25, Armstrong lofted a pass to junior wide receiver Dion Sutton that just missed.
The Warriors went for it on fourth down, and Armstrong replicated the play. This time, Sutton snagged the throw for an 18-yard completion that put the Warriors in prime field position at the Doss 7.
On the next play, Gordon ran the ball into the end zone to tie the game at 6. The Warriorsâ 2-point conversion attempt failed.
