Kentucky Speedway season in flux
#1
Kentucky Speedway officials hope to announce the track's 2012 season schedule early next week.

But the details could be out sooner.

IndyCar plans to announce the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule Friday in Las Vegas, spokeswoman Amy Konrath said. NASCAR could release the Nationwide Series schedule this week and the Camping World Truck Series next week, spokesman Kerry Tharp said.

The IndyCar Series has been a Kentucky Speedway staple since 2000, but a return engagement next year isn't a certainty.

The event has been moved from early August to Labor Day weekend to early October the past three years, and attendance has dropped considerably since an event record 66,389 attended in 2008.

The broadcast of the Oct. 2 Kentucky Indy 300 earned a dismal 0.1 rating and was watched by fewer than 200,000 people, the Sports Business Journal's John Ourand reported on Twitter. The broadcast of the Kentucky 225 Camping World Truck Series race Oct. 1 drew a 0.56 rating and 607,000 viewers, according to Speed.

Before the Truck Series race, NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations Steve O'Donnell confirmed there had been talks with Kentucky Speedway officials about adding a second Nationwide Series race for 2012 and pairing it with the Camping World Truck Series race in late September or early October.

The speedway's Sprint Cup Series race has been scheduled for June 30 and again will be supported by a Camping World Truck Series race June 28 and a Nationwide Series race June 29.
