Wayne County won its first state tournament game in 22 years by beating Perry County Central 68-58 in Rupp Arena Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals had gone 0-5 in the Sweet Sixteen since a state runner-up finish to Pleasure Ridge Park in 1989.

Gavin Dunagan led Wayne County with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Hopper had 21 points.

Perry Central was led by seventh-grader Braxton Beverly’s 23 points.

This is the 7th time Rodney Woods has brought Wayne County to the state tournament. Perry Central is making its sixth appearance but first under Allan Hatcher, who also brought Graves County and Marshall County to the Sweet Sixteen.

Where was the Cornett brothers, did they miss the bus? Kyle Huff had a big game for the Commodores.

Congrats Wayne Co, good luck against Rowan.

hey I called this in a earlier thread about predictions. These Wayne county seniors were hungry enough to beat Perry. Now how far can their seniors lead this team? It only gets tougher. Congats and good luck. And hats off to the 7th grader for Perry. He can only get better with coaching or worse.

Congrats to Wayne on the win and Perry on a great season.

Really impressive to see the a 7th grader score that many points in his first sweet 16 appearance. I think that Perry is set for some great years with him being the cornerstone.

Congrats to Wayne County for an excellent game.
I think that college court worked to Wayne County's advantage in this one.
It made that zone much harder to cover all the shooters and it wore Dillon out.

Congrats to the Perry seniors for great careers and congrats to Braxton Beverly for his outstanding performance.
Cameron Mills was at the game and all he wanted to talk about was the youngster.

Bradley played a fantastic game at Rupp - and he's only a 7th-grader. Congrats to Wayne County! IT should be a great game with Rowan County tonight.

Truly amazing that a seventh grader can score 23 points as a 13 year old going against some 17 and 18 year old seniors.
Perry better hold on to this one.
