Murray finds success in regional meet: Tigers send five individuals, four relay teams
#1
Traveling to Owensboro for the regional swim meet over the weekend, Murray High walked away from the event with four individual regional champions as well as a top relay finisher. Senior Lauren Erickson led the charge for head coach John Wand, cashing in two tickets to Louisville with her wins in the 200 IM (seeded 12th) and the 100 butterfly (seated 16th), while Daniel McGee added a win in the 500 free (seeded 8th) as well. As a team, Erickson, Abby Gibson, Nicole McGee and Megan Wilson picked up a bid in the girls’ 200 free relay (seeded 14th).
They weren’t the only ones to earn a shot at state glory though as a handful of other Tigers qualified for spots with their performances. Connor McKenna and Eb Weber will swim for Murray on the boys side in the 50 free (seeded 31st) and the 100 butterfly (seeded 19th) respectively, while Megan Wilson picked up a bid in the 100 backstroke (seeded 24th). McGee and Erickson will also represent the black and gold in the the 200 free (seeded 10th) and 100 butterfly (seeded 16th) respectively.
As for relay teams, the boys will see the 200 and 400 free teams make the trip to Louisville, while the girls will send the 400 free team.
As a whole, the Tigers narrowly missed out on their goal of a top three finish but matched their fourth place showing from a season ago, finishing behind Bowling Green, Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic. Their combined score of 248 was just three points shy off the third place Aces.
Wand will now have the task of preparing his team for what awaits them in Louisville as they’ll ready for a showdown with the state’s best in the two day state meet at Ralph Wright Natatorium on February 23-25.
