Say goodbye to the Orangemen -- and the Orangewomen. From now on, Syracuse University's athletic teams will be known simply as the Orange (the color presumably, not the fruit) and have the same logo, an interlocking SU. The school announced the change as part a result of the identity design program recently completed with partner Nike.

So they changed the school's nickname because Nike wanted them to?

Despite the nickname, the "Orange" is going to be a tough team to send home in March.

"Orangemen" has nothing to do with fruit. It was a reference to Native Americans originally and their "orange" skin tone, much like the Washington Redskins. Nowadays, it is not P.C. to refer to a group of minority people by their skin color, especially if they are Native American.

That might be where it came from but if anyone has watched Syracuse play the past 20 years all they would have saw is that big orange ball they use as a mascot. There was no need to change it. This country is too friggin "PC".
