(5) Lindsey Wilson 81 Shawnee State 77 (OT)
#1
COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team used a strong second-half performance to turn a 12-point halftime deficit into an 81-77 overtime victory over Shawnee State (Ohio) on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (21-4, 6-4 Mid-South Conference) used a couple of strong defensive stands late in overtime and a pair of Jordan Hamlette free throws to help secure the win over the upset-minded Bears (12-14, 2-8 MSC).

Bryan Wallace finished with 27 points, a season-high nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. With the steals, Wallace is now the program's all-time leader in steals with 266, passing former Blue Raider Scott Cook (2002-05). Pepper Ben Ofokile set new career highs on the night, pouring in 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Blue Raider. Kel Stotts also finished in double figures with 18 and had five steals.

Shawnee State led for the opening 10 minutes of play with Lindsey Wilson trailing, but never by more than four points as the teams traded buckets. The Blue Raiders took their first lead of the contest at the 9:38 mark after Stotts stole a pass and sped to the hoop for the layup, also connecting on the ensuing free throw as he was fouled driving to the hoop to make it 20-18.

Lindsey Wilson later led 25-23, but the Blue Raiders hit a wall and came up empty on multiple possessions and the Bears took advantage. Shawnee State scored 13-straight points to go up 36-25, part of an 18-4 run that lasted seven minutes and 19 seconds to close out the half and take a 41-29 lead into halftime. In that seven minute run by the Bears, Lindsey Wilson committed three turnovers and went 1-for-12 from the floor.

Lindsey Wilson managed just a 31.3 shooting percentage (10-32) from the floor and 2-of-8 makes from beyond the arc. Shawnee State hit 47.1 percent (16-34) and connected on 5-of-11 3-pointers.

The Blue Raiders began going to work to erase the deficit early in the second half. After a pair of Wallace free throws, Ofokile hit back-to-back layups to make it a five-point game at 47-42 with just over 13 minutes to play. Wallace later hit a pair of free throws to make it a one possession game at 50-47 and then the two teams went back to trading baskets. Lindsey Wilson tried to reel in the Bears, but Shawnee State always had an answer as the lead fluctuated between six points and one point for over seven minutes.

Lindsey Wilson finally pulled ahead after a 7-0 run made it 65-64 with 4:24 to play with Ofokile scoring five of the points. The game went back to exchanging baskets with things finally leveling out at 69-69 after a Wallace layup with 45 seconds to go. Both Shawnee State and LWC missed their respective shots at pulling ahead in the final 30 seconds as the game went into overtime.

Overtime went back to trading baskets before Stotts hit a 3-pointer to put LWC up 76-75. After a Bear bucket, Wallace followed with a three of his own to make it 79-77 with 1:33 to go. Following an LWC miss, Shawnee State had a chance to tie it on a layup, but Ofokile contested the shot and the Blue Raiders grabbed the rebound. Hamlette then iced the game with two free throws to make it 81-77 with 10 seconds to go. LWC put forth one final strong defensive effort on the final SSU possession for good measure.

Lindsey Wilson shot 37.8 percent from the floor but added a perfect 11-for-11 mark from the charity stripe in the second half and overtime.

Four Bears finished with double figures led by Matt Rhodes' 20. Frederick Moore and Tamal Watkins both had double-doubles for Shawnee State.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Thursday against Cumberlands (Ky.).
