Manual 24, Male 14
#1
This used to be one of the best rivalries in the nation, and is still a big game in Louisville. Big win by Manual as they take the 3 seed

The Old Rivalry is very special to Manual's Dishan Romine, especially after Friday night's football game on Male's turf.

Romine, who is headed to Western Kentucky University next fall, ran for 207 yards and three TDs on 35 carries, as Manual won 24-14. It was Manual's third straight victory in the rivalry that began in 1893.

"This is a very special game," Romine said. "It's one of the biggest rivalries in the country, and it's the biggest game on our schedule every season. It means everything to us to win this game."

Manual (3-6) capitalized on three Male turnovers in the second half to hand the Bulldogs (4-5) to their fourth consecutive loss. The win gave Manual third place in the Class 6A District Four. Male finished fourth at 0-3. Trinity was first at 3-0 and St. Xavier was second at 2-1.

Manual trailed Male 14-10 at halftime, but Manual's Andre Scruggs recovered a fumble by Marque Northington at the Male 12-yard line. Romine scored on the next play around right end for a 17-14 lead at the 2:37 mark of the third quarter.

Male's Ellis Cain fumbled the ball away to Manual on the Bulldogs' next possession, but Male's defense stopped the Crimsons that time.

Manual added to the lead after driving 74 yards on 13 plays and scored with a 1-yard run by Romine with 1:30 left in the game.

A big play in the drive was a fourth-down, 14-yard pass from Manual quarterback Mason Motley to Jake Rist.

"Rist made a great play on that fourth-down play,'' Motley said. "It all starts with the offensive line. They came off the ball hard.''

Male's Tyler Erny completed three passes for 55 yards on Male's last possession, but his fourth pass was intercepted by Michael Nelson in the end zone.

In the first half Male drove to the Manual 26, but Erny's pass in the end zone was intercepted by Juwan Gardner.

Romine opened the scoring with a 71-yard run to put Manual ahead 7-0 with 2:41 left in the first quarter. Male then drove 65 yards in 10 plays and scored on a 4-yard run by Ellis Cain on the second play of the second quarter.

"I saw a big opening and I needed to break one tackle, " Romine said. "Our offensive line is young, but their biggest asset is they work hard."

"Once again, both teams played hard,'' Manual coach Dr. Oliver Lucas said. "It's tough to lose this game. We always get on Romine's back every game.''

Turnovers hurt Male. "You win 2 percent of your games when you make four turnovers,'' Male coach Chris Wolfe said. "They (Manual) turned the ball over multiple times when I saw their games (on film). Both of our interceptions came in the end zone.''
