Do you consider sports to be entertainment?
#1
Entertainment: Noun
- The action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment.
- An event, performance, or activity designed to entertain others.

Question.....
Do you consider high school athletics to be entertainment?
Leave your comments below.

College & Pro sports have become a massive spectacle on all fronts. Just about every major arena has a video board. Every team has their own hype intro video, their own music, some type of pyro and/or light show & promotional posters.

This has flowed down to high school athletics.
Fireworks, inflatable tunnels, uniform variations, Hudl highlight videos on social media, custom intro music... the list can go on and on.
High school payers want that same type of big game environment atmosphere the see in college or the pro's, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Like most members on this site, I've been to so many high school stadiums and gyms, I can't remember them all. In the past 5-6 years, they all follow a similar format.
The home team usually has some type of large visual object they huddle around, wait for the music to hit and come running out to their sideline.

The days of coming to a game, on any level, just to see a game are long gone.
Sports have way too much to compete against nowadays. Players that love the sport will play whether it's in front of nobody or 50,000 people. Without the fans though, professional sports do not exist.

Good teams/Good players draw fans.
Fans pay their money to see said good teams/players.
Advertisers spend insane amounts of money on their product to attract fans to their business..
Leagues and teams get insane amounts of money from said advertisers to pay said good players to be on their said good team.

People will drive hours and spend crazy amounts of money on tickets & travel to see their favorite team and favorite player..... 98% of the time, those people have zero attachment to that team or player other than just being a fan. All in the name of being entertained.

It's something that entertains me so...I guess my answer is yes.

Did I pass?

No. Entertaining allows those playing said sport to Express their opinions and being they're baggage into the game. Names should never be put on the backs of jerseys.
What is wrote on the front is what matters.

Now FoSho you know it entertains you when you are on the winning side but read the meaning for entertainment enjoyment and amusement some don’t enjoy the losing part. In high school that’s a tuff question some are entertaining and some aren’t so much like when the running clock gets involved. Most games Are like suspense movies they keep you on edge now to me that’s entertaining that’s just my thought.

I agree Gut what’s on the front is what matters, can remember the old days when that was all there was. If you enjoy the game like most of the people on here they know the players by their # anyway. Gut I know you enjoy the game so it has to be some form of entertainment

#12
Absolutely I consider all types of sports entertainment, nothing I love better than seeing a grand performance by two great teams going to war.

I'm sure I have made more than my fair share of less than stellar threads on this site, but this particular thread reminds me of how desperately we members of Bluegrass Rivals need week 0 of the KHSAA football season to get here. :flush:

In leu of nothing better to do than respond to mundane questions like this LOL...…

HS football is definitely entertaining. To those involved as players, coaches and officials, I would argue that it is a job and they do it for the love of the game and see zero amount of entertainment value. Just my opinion.

There, I have jumped on the "hurry up and get here Aug 17th!!!!!!" wagon. Smile

WrestleMania is the best show in Live entertainment and it's not even close.

Final Four, Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, MMA & Boxing events..... nothing compares to WrestleMania on the entertainment level.

Before I get demolished for this, here is my disclaimer.
Yes, I know Pro Wrestling is Booked & Scripted. Even though we know the performers know the outcome and the matches are not considered true athletic competitions, it is still a major business.
How does that relate to true sports? I'm glad you asked....
The principles between the two are the same. Pro wrestling & sporting events can be considered half brothers, but belong to the same family. Those that are fans attend & follow your team to watch them play hoping they make big plays and win games. All in the name of being entertained.

The less I am tied to one of the teams, the more entertaining it is. If its a school I have close connections with, or if I have a strong like/dislike of one of the teams, it's a different kind of enjoyment.
