Cross Country, Football, Track & Field are Classed. The list below are for the Team titles only. Individual state champions would be way too much (for me) to list.
Using the Football Class System (1A-6A), below are the Non-Classed KHSAA sports from 2007 through Present (baseball hasn't completed yet). 2007 was the first year the KHSAA used the six class system. Several Female Catholic schools have won multiple state championships, but those schools do not have a football team.
I chose not to list the Competitive Activities the KHSAA sanctions, that's a list for another day.

Look at baseball, boys basketball, and boys soccer and you will learn all you need to know about the need for classification. Only 2 times in all three sports did a less than 4A win. Shelby Valley, which had Elisha Justice and a host of solid teammates, and Mason County, which is now 4A, who had some Miller kid........

The KHSAA Mission Statement
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association was organized in 1917 and is the agency designated by the Kentucky Department of Education to manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth. The Association is a voluntary nonprofit 501©3 organization made up of 280 member schools both public and private. The KHSAA sanctions 40 state championships in 12 sports and 4 sport activities, licenses and trains over 4,000 officials, provides catastrophic insurance for its more than 70,000 member school student-athletes, as well as overseeing coaching education and sports safety programs.
Alright KHSAA, the evidence doesn't lie. Your mission statement says "To manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth."
There is NO WAY any reasonable person can look at the results above and think these sports are being properly managed. Some type of Class system or Public/Private Post-Season split needs to occur.
Volleyball has been a KHSAA sport since 1979.... That's 38 seasons and NO public school has EVER won the state championship.
Boys Swimming has been won by the same team (St. Xavier - 6A) for 28 straight seasons.
Girls Swimming has been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Boys Soccer has been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Boys & Girls Tennis have been won by a 6A school or a Private school since 2007.
Something can be done by the KHSAA. I don't have the best solution, but any type of Public/Private split or Class system has to be better than what we have now.
Have two classes, Small Schools (1A, 2A, 3A) split from the Large Schools (4A, 5A, 6A).
If not a Class system, split the Public and Private schools for Post-Season play.
Telling schools to "up their game" or develop more athletes in their feeder systems, hire better coaches or schedule tougher competition is not an answer. For some teams, winning a Regional tournament and going to the state meet in that sport can set a town on fire with support for their school. Winning a state championship (classed or not, Public/Private split or not) can get more kids involved at all levels in that area. If the KHSAA really wants high school sports as well as middle, elementary and rec. leagues to grow in our Commonwealth, they really need to Class or have a Public/Private split.

big schools, have big advantage

Grammar errors aside, I'm not making the argument that "Big schools" always have the advantage.
Take Wrestling for example, there are reasons why the NFHS & the KHSAA have specific weight classes and require wrestlers to make weight before competing in an event. Having a 160 lbs. wrestler compete for a individual championship against a 113 lbs. wrestler wouldn't be fair. Even though the 113 lbs. wrestler might be the best in his weight class, that big of weight difference is the exact reason why their are different weight classes.
1A & 2A (1A)
3A & 4A (2A)
5A & 6A (3A)
1A, 2A, 3A (Small School)
4A, 5A, 6A (Large School)
Two or three classes would be the best. Or having a Public/Private split are the options I see that would level the playing field for all involved. Sports are about striving to be the best and winning the competition you compete in. However, when a goal is so far out of reach that it doesn't become fun for the players, we have a problem. Giving the schools who've never been to a state championship game or state tournament the idea they can actually win a state title, IMO, would be a great way to rejuvenate participation numbers and community support for the member schools.

The numbers are telling. Just look at the baseball numbers.Soccer, tennis etc.. Theres a lot more to it than just numbers but I can see why some folks break it down to just numbers. Like "bigger schools, more athletes" though theres a bit more to it than that.
Its easier for more urban higher populated areas to have better feeder systems, such as in baseball. Leagues will have many teams, AAU and travel teams that play all year. One of these teams will have more money in their gloves/bats than our whole league will have for its entire budget .Your more rural areas just cant support those types of activities. Heck most LL's around here can barely field 4-6 teams per league. You cant keep telling people to "build better feeder systems" when the area cant support it. Whether its financial, social or low population being the problem. Prestonsburg has one of the nicest set of diamonds around but no matter what Prestonsburg will never have the baseball infrastructure that Lexington,Louisville or Covington will have. Period. Just a "for instance"..

Why does a certain size school have to win a state championship?
It is a state championship. It isn't going to be easy, nor should it be.

I agree with you on winning. Im looking at this from a different point of view than winning. I hear people all the time using the "get a better system" approach. My point is that many areas cant, period. For several reasons. Its nothing to do with jealousy at all, it is what it is and we hillbilly's are realists if nothing else. Ive never said that its "not fair" but reality is what it is. Telling a poor, small town to get a build a better system is like telling a 5'10 kid to grow another foot if he wants to make anything of himself.
As far as the classes go my question is very simple..If you do it for some sports why not do it for some of the others?

All of that aside the KHSAA has made it very clear on their position. They are not going to change it. They say its not in the best interest of the student athlete..Though I would like to hear a little better explanation than that.

I 100% agree. God only knows the heart breaking football seasons I've sat through as a JC fan until we finally cut the head off the dragon. I'm also a 15th region fan. If JC doesn't make it to a state meet, I'm 100% behind any 15th region team or any mountain team that is competing at the state level. And No, this isn't a pity party thread for our poor mountain schools. I'm the person who makes the threads about how many winless teams make the football playoffs or teams that have less than two wins making the district basketball tournaments. The argument about winning a state champion not being easy or being fair is valid, but not the best rebuttal to the situation I've outlined. Let's hear the KHSAA articulate why the sports I've got listed are not Classed. The results are there in black & white. The numbers don't lie. The numbers paint the picture of the current state of high school athletics in our Commonwealth. The Metro areas in our state are dominating athletics (that discussion is it's own thread) and the rural areas are sinking. Is that fair? Some say Yes, some say No. IMO, over the past 100 years, the KHSAA has been the best thing for athletics in our Commonwealth. Thousands of men and women have developed a lifelong love for the sport they played and pride for the school they played for. With that said, times have changed. The Boys Sweet 16 have been seeing low attendance numbers, there's no drama anymore. The days of having a Carr Creek or a Clay County or a '96 Paintsville team cut down the nets are long gone. The allure for the majority of the fans coming to the Sweet 16 for all those years was to see a small school or the underdog come in a win the state title for their hometown. Those days are gone. The majority of the fans that have stopped coming is because they don't wanna see a Metro area or a Private school win. Where's the excitement in that? Seeing a school with 1,500+ students blow a team with less than 300 students off the floor in the first round is not gonna draw fans.
Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I've got it all wrong. I don't think I do, maybe somebody can explain (and make me believe) why using a Class system would be bad for high school athletics.
Some sports are classed, some are not. If the KHSAA really wants to properly 'manage' high school athletics in our Commonwealth, they need to Class the other sports or don't Class any of them.

Let's imagine a KHSAA where no sports were Classed.
About three schools (Trinity, St. X, Highlands) would have a football team state championship. One or two different teams might sneak in there once in awhile, but they would few and far between. Does that mean that teams like Belfry, Bowling Green, Mayfield or Boyle County weren't good enough or didn't deserve to win a state championship during their dynasty years, No. It proved exactly why we need Classes for other sports. The powerhouse team Belfry was in 2016 wouldn't have beat Trinity this past season. Belfry deserved their 3A state championship, they were the best and most dominate team in 3A without question. The pirates would have gave Trinity a game for a few quarters, but the Rocks would have pulled away in the 2nd half. And No Belfry fans, please don't send me Hate mail, just using you guys as an example.
Think of all the other great teams in your part of the Commonwealth over the years that ran in to a 6A powerhouse or a Private school that knocked them out of post-season play. We will never know, but could that team have dominated teams in their Class? I've heard the stories all the time, "Our 1987 team was incredible, but we had to play XXXXXX in the first round of the regional tournament and they ended up winning the state championship."

I've heard the stories all the time, "Our 1987 team was incredible, but we had to play XXXXXX in the first round of the regional tournament and they ended up winning the state championship."

Let's look at the 2015/2016 school year.
Fall Sports:
Boys Soccer - Covington Catholic (5A - Private)
Girls Soccer - Sacred Heart (No football Class - Private)
Boys Golf - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Golf - Madison Central (6A)
Volleyball - Assumption (No football Class - Private)
Winter Sports:
Boys Basketball - PL Dunbar (6A)
Girls Basketball - Butler (6A)
Boys Swimming & Diving - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Swimming & Diving - Sacred Heart (No football Class - Private)
Wrestling - Union County (3A)
Summer Sports:
Baseball - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Softball - Scott County (6A)
Boys Tennis - St. Xavier (6A - Private)
Girls Tennis - McCracken County (6A)
Private schools won Eight of the possible Fourteen Non-Classed Team State Championships. Five of the remaining Six teams are from one of the large metro areas in our Commonwealth (Union County is the only team that is not).
6A schools won Nine of the possible Fourteen Non-Classed Team State Championships. Three schools do not have a football team (Girls, Private), one 5A school (Private) and one 3A (Public).
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury..... The evidence before you proves beyond a Reasonable Doubt why some type of Classification system or separation of the Public & Private schools needs to be implemented in all KHSAA sports.

You can even use the 15th region as a microcosm for the state. Johnson Central over the last decade has been the dominant school in most every non-classed sport. They are the biggest school. Now I'm not complaining just stating facts, its a pretty simple formula.

I can see the other side of it too. When the state championships were first thought up it was under the position that everyone has the same chance to win the title. Small schools like hazard, Harlan, lily high school, and corbin(who was a 1A school in the 30's when they won the sweet 16) had a chance because you only had the kids who lived in your district. Also there were a lot less big schools because bussing wasn't like it is today. Where ther used to be six or seven schools in a county, they have consolidated into one. Also, now days with transfers and social media it isn't the same. Five of the best basketball players in Louisville may decide they "want to be engineers" and end up at manual. Or a kid may think he has a better chance at another school in his region and transfer there to try to win a title (especially in the 13th and 14th regions). Not everyone has an equal shot anymore, and no amount of coaching or development can even it up. The khsaa needs to develope two classes for the non contact sports.

Let's use basketball regions for the 2015/2016 school year I've already broke down. Four of the five largest metro areas in our Commonwealth had a team win a Non-Classed team state title.
Region 1 Paducah
McCracken County
Region 2
Union County
Region 6 Louisville
Butler
Region 7 Louisville
St. Xavier
Sacred Heart
Assumption
Region 9 Covington
Covington Catholic
Region 11 Lexington/Richmond/Georgetown
Madison Central
Scott County
PL Dunbar
More evidence presented to the Jury. This is not me complaining about any school or region not winning a state titles on a regular basis. As Single Wing 77 said, in 1917, the KHSAA had the perfect idea for that time that all member schools had an equal shot at winning a state championship. "One state, One champion." In 1959, the KHSAA began awarding Three State Championships in Football. In 1975, the 4 Class system was introduced. In 2007, we got the 6 Class system.
Now, I realize the BOC can make the decision to experiment or implement with some type of Class system. It's worth at least experimenting with some type of Class system for all sports or a Public/Private split. If I'm wrong and it's a disaster, then I'm wrong and I'll admit it.

Play in the class your assigned. Get better. Shut up. Cry Cry Cry. That is all I ever hear about the private/public nonsense. You're either good enough to win or your not. Everything else is irrelevant.

Wrestling does not need classified for the state individual tournament. I think what the coaches association has done in big school vs little school for the state duals tournament is a good idea for that event.

Class everything.
You'll never convince me that harlan high school should have to compete with Male or Trinity in anything!

There's a reason why the College athletics have Div. 1, Div. 2, Div. 3, the FBS/FCS Divisions and NAIA.
Let's look at an example.
In 2011, UPike won the NAIA Nation Championship. The same year, UK made the NCAA Final Four. UK would have beat Pikeville by 30+ points that season. Does that mean UPike wasn't a good basketball team... No. It means that talent levels are not equal. Even in college, where the object is to get the best players possible by recruiting, talent is not the same.
Nobody will ever convince me that Harlan has the talent on their roster like Trinity does. Different regions, I get it, but they are competing for the same state championship. In the first round of the District tournament, all member schools that have boys basketball begin the journey to championship Sunday. Yes, I'm comparing Harlan to UPike and UK to Trinity. As other people have already said on here, the argument is not about 'getting better', developing better athletes, building better feeder systems or playing better competition. Sometimes you have to call a Spade a Spade. Read my post about not having Classes in football, if the KHSAA and the BOC really thought we didn't need Classes, then we would only have one state football champion. We don't have just one, but we have six. IMO, this is an admission of what we already know, Why add two more Classes bringing the total up to six if they didn't recognize the need to spread out the member schools in a effort to make the playing field more even for those involved. They said it was to increase the number of teams in the Playoffs. Like I've posted on here several times before, in every sport but football, every eligible member school got at least one post-season contest, no matter their record. If earning a playoff spot was that important, we would still have four Classes.

I didn't even read past your first sentence, but the fact you had an entire paragraph trying to convince me we need to give a trophy to everybody is just sad. Your District, your School, and your Community, if they all want it, you'll have a good football program or soccer or whatever. If they don't want it you won't. It doesn't matter if we take privates out of general population. Jenkins wouldn't beat Louisville Holy Cross or Bethlehem. For that matter Jenkins couldn't beat Phelps.
Everything else in this topic is just stupid nonsense. Work hard, get better, win. You're entitled to nothing in this world. The same with football.
Edit: I read your first and last sentences only. 6 classes are a joke. But play in yours assigned, don't complain. Or practice acting or something.

I've not said anything about any teams being "entitled" to win anything.
Lets use Volleyball for an example.
A Private school has won every state title since the sport was introduced in 1979. Only six teams (Notre Dame, Mercy, St. Henry, Assumption, Villa Madonna & Sacred Heart) from two counties (Jefferson & Kenton) have ever won a volleyball state title.
http://khsaa.org/handbook/winners/vbwinners.pdf
There is NO WAY anybody can convince this is fair, 38 seasons and not one public school has ever won the state title in that sport.
That is insane. Volleyball is one sport that may not need to be Classed, but, IMO, a Public/Private split does needs to happen.

Why because they're better than public schools? Get better at your sport.

It's not that simple. If a L-ville. Lex./GTown/Richmond, NKY area public school can't win it with the players they have year in and year out, ain't nobody gonna do it.
I could see a span of about 8-10 years where a few schools go back about forth of being on top. After 38 seasons, something needs to change.

Private/Public is blown wayyyyyyy out of proportion
Enrollment size is very telling.
Look at the small private schools. Just some examples...
Rose Hill
LCA
LexCath
NewCath
St. Henry
Bishop Brossart
Cov. Holy Cross
Lou. Holy Cross
CAL
DeSales
Not exactly beating the brakes off all other schools of equal size because they are a Private School.
Does being a Private School offer some advantages? Sure. But it's also not a free pass to collect championship trophies.
The bigger and better question should be why does no other 6A Public School besides maybe Male and Scott County have the program built strong enough to compete year in and year out with Trinity.
Look at Belfry's record against Private Schools. Belfry is 12-2 All-Time vs. Privates by my count. Granted they have only played Privates of similar size.
Now enrollment... well that's a different bear. If Belfry was playing Privates with 3-4 times their enrollment that number would be flipped.
Classes need to happen, but by and large with the exception of Trinity; Publics and Privates is nothing more than a lot of hot air.
The GCL is very strong but even in Ohio the Publics win their fair share of titles.

Gtown has won it once. Scott County is the most consistent large public school outside of Male and Bowling Green.
The problem with Lexington and NKY is no program stands out. All the talent divides up equally. Lexington also has a very weak youth football program city wide.
Northern Kentucky is a division of the riches. It has always been so competitive that no single larger school has been able toe stablish a foothold as the premier program. The two most well respected programs are medium sized schools in Highlands and CovCath.
Now if those two didn't exist and let's say a program like Dixie Heights sustained 10 years of dominance and people moved to the Dixie District to raise their kids then maybe it would be difference.

I could live with 5 classes, but truthfully KY should only be a 4-class state judging by population.

I would have no problem going to 4-5 classes but I do think we need them. It just dosnt make sense classing some sports and not the others..
