New Floyd Central Coaches
#1
Head - Kevin Spurlock
Assistant - Shawn Hager

Let's see what happens!

Why is the football coach the assistant basketball coach? All successful football programs are lifting and working on strength and body conditioning. Looks like some people have no idea what it's going to take to compete in their football district. Sad for the kids. Is the basketball coach going to be assistant football coach. Looks like a money deal to people outside the programs.

Good luck to them both

You can do both. Most successful programs have kids playing two and three sports. Look at JC. Good at everything. Matney coaches football and wrestling. Their best football players wrestle. They all still workout year round.

Wrestling, football, and weightlifting go hand in hand. Not basketball. You would never see matney coaching basketball or baseball.

Typical Eastern Kentucky. Take care of your college buddies. No athletic hope for the sports program. I am sure the so called powerhouses (Belfry -football, Johnson Central- Basketball) are tickled about these hires. One will probably be the baseball coach as well.

Kevin Spurlock is a nice hire for the boys program. Good guy!

I just don't understand all the negativity. The school isn't even finished and people are already hoping for failure and speaking so negatively??? How about we support our community and this school by building the coaches and players up! It's ridiculous. Let's give people a chance because I think some of us may be eating our negative words later..

Mathey does coach baseball. He coached a league team in Johnson Co and also was involved in the 8u and 10u travel baseball teams

That's not high school

No it's not. Now does wrestling make you better at football. Yes. Wrestling makes you better at everything in my opinion. But when Matney is coaching wrestling or when he coached track he was focused on that sport. That's why he hires a strength coach. Of course he stays in the know but he isn't the one running that aspect of the program. He stays involved in every aspect of the school as he can. But yes it is possible to coach more than just football and be successful.

So Henry will only let teachers be coaches because he doesn't want to pay them and you think he's going to hire a strength coach?

Teachers get paid to be coaches as well as anyone else so that's false.

It looks like all the negativity is really being directed at the district administration, not the hires. People in these two communities have been told for the past two years that this was going to be "The high school" that people in Floyd county never had with every opportunity to be the best academic and atheltic programs in the area. What started out as a project of around $48 million, and with all the change orders, is now running in mid $50 million range, people feel the athletic part is not going to happen. Tax payers are beginning to wonder what did we just build? Then, what was to be an aggressive search for quaility coaches ended up going bust. Not that the hired coaches can't do a great job, but applications didn't pour in from all over for the positions. If they did they didn't get an interview. The process was kept so secret that no one knew anything but gossip and hearsay. A lot of people didn't think that the process was transparent. Football coach is coming in way too late to have any effect on strength and conditioning. There is no track at the new facility. With the aforementioned price tag, why was it left out. People from Floyd has told me that in reality the perception is all the BOE did was build a new ACHS with its location. The negativity started when the property was bought and anything pertaining to the new school was locked up in a secret vault. I'm now hearing the principal will come from an elementary school in the right beaver area. So, let's see how long this story is allowed to spin around until someone either confirms or denies the possibility.

An absolute Joke of a hire for Floyd Central's basketball team. When you hire someone simply upon them kissing your a** then you won't get any production. He quit on the kids of Allen Central already within the first 3 years working there, he'll do it again. Within the next 2 years there will be a thread on here asking about coaching vacancies and Floyd Central will be one of them.
#17
Why did they go through all this to hire Kevin Spurlock. I don't understand.
#18
How and when has Spurlock quit at Allen Central? That doesn't make any sense.

When Spurlock returned to Allen Central, he was named baseball coach, but wound up leaving that job after one season. I was guessing that's what milkcrate52 was talking about.
#20
That doesn't mean he quit on them. He finished the season, then decided to do other things. Nothing wrong with that. That's not quitting.

I agree with you. I like the hire of Spurlock. I will miss his show with Mark Martin the WMDJ Facebook page but I look forward to going out to games to cheer he and Floyd Central on.
#22
He made them believe he was going to coach the 2nd year until one week until the regular season started to make them scramble for a coach. That's quitting on them.

Shawn Hager is a good person and a GREAT COACH. He is all about the kids and a great role model. Shawn knows football, basketball and baseball
#24
I hope Kevin goes well , he was fired from some great schools .
#25
Why did they just hire the football coach as an assistant basketball coach as well?
#26
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think hager is one of only two coaches not Haywood to win this region since close to 2000. The other being Holcomb.
#27
Kevin and Shawn both good hires. Kevin will do a good job if all the talent stays. His hire improves their chances of winning the region.
#28
Hager is a solid hire for sure. Spurlock def knows bball and the kids seem to play hard for him, but the question mark with him has been longevity.
#29
Spurlock is not a very good coach he been let go by some pretty good basketball schools.
#30
This is a joke. The South Floyd coach was the 15th Region Coach of The Year this year. Not even considered for the job. I hope that for his sake someone will give him chance elsewhere.
