Bowling Greenâs softball team didnât take long to start the year in style.
The Lady Purples (1-0) scored 13 runs in the first inning Monday, and they opened their season with a 15-0 win over Russellville in three innings at BGHS.
âIt was nice to come out for our first game and have a good first inning,â BG junior outfielder Tessa Lindsey said. âRussellville is underestimated. Theyâre not bad and got better as they went, so this was good motivation for us. Weâre very confident, and it helps to start like this.â
The Lady Purples scored five runs before recording an out. They had six hits in their 13-run first inning, but drew six walks and stole seven bases in the frame.
Bowling Green batted all the way through the lineup twice before junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Brittany Vaughn flied out to center field to end the onslaught.
âWe got up to the plate and got the bats going early, so I was happy with the offensive output,â BG coach Lisa Correa said. âWe had good team speed on the bases and took advantage of some passed balls and hard hits to advance our runners. That first inning went very well.â
Russellville sophomore pitcher Laura Marksberry was charged with 13 runs in one-third of an inning before being relieved by Tara Gilbert.
Gilbert gave up one hit in 21⁄3 innings of work, but walked six batters, including two straight with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third to bring the game to a close.
The Lady Purples reached base 21 times in the game, including seven hits.
Lindsey finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior pitcher MacKenzie Brumit added two hits and drove in a run.
Junior third baseman Tori Dillard walked twice, hit an RBI single and scored three times. Bowling Green walked 10 times and stole nine total bases.
Senior catcher Amy Kovanda and Vaughn drew the final two walks that sealed the victory. Every player in the BG lineup scored a run except Brumit, but her pinch-runner Ramsey Williams came around to score twice.
âWe usually donât have that many stolen bases,â Lindsey said. âWe just want to keep improving from that.â
Brumit struck out four batters in three innings for BG, allowing three hits and a walk.
Senior Emily Woodson had two singles for Russellville (0-1).
âWe had some good hits in the first inning and kept battling,â Brumit said. âIt was great to have that big lead in the first inning, especially as a pitcher. We have a lot of potential and talent this year. We just have to put forth the effort.â
The Lady Purples continue a three-game homestand to start the season at 5:30 p.m. today, when they host Barren County. Russellville hosts Barren County at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
âWeâre trying to get better each game,â Correa said. âI keep telling them itâs not how we start this season, but how we finish.â
