Trinity vs. Fern Creek (1-12-10 in LIT)
#1
ROCKS RETURN TO LIT FOR NINTH STRAIGHT YEAR
SHAMROCKS HAVE WON TITLES IN STATE’S TOP TWO HOLIDAY TOURNAMENTS

Appearing in the Republic Bank/ Coca-Cola/ Louisville Invitational Tournament for the ninth consecutive season, the second best active streak in the tournament, Trinity looks to claim its second title in event history, beginning the quest with an opening game with Fern Creek.
This is the 63rd year for the Louisville Invitational Tournament, the nation’s oldest invitational tournament.
It is the first meeting between the Rocks and Tigers since a 49-31 Trinity victory on Feb. 9, 2007. Trinity’s most notable win in program history over Fern Creek came on March 12, 2004 at the Louisville Gardens, a 65-40 win over the Tigers in the regional semifinals after the Rocks had suffered a three-point setback to future Louisville wide receiver Mario Urrutia on Feb. 6, 2004, 63-60.
Trinity is hoping to claim its third in-season tournament title of the season this week. The Shamrocks have already won titles at the 2009 Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass and 2009 Republic Bank Holiday Classic. In 2004-2005, Trinity reached the finals of the King of the Bluegrass, Republic Bank Holiday Classic (know as Fifth Third Bank Classic at the time) and Louisville Invitational Tournament. The Rocks claimed two of the three tournaments that season.
Trinity hopes to earn the 799th win in program history tonight. The Rocks are 798-610 all-time in 1408 games entering tonight’s matchup with the Tigers. Mike Szabo has accounted for 163 of the 798 wins in his nine seasons with the Shamrocks.
Trinity is coming off a 66-46 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. The Shamrocks used a 23-6 run during the second half to take control in the game. The streak included 14 straight by the Rocks, seven of which came from freshman James Quick. Quick flirted with a triple-double in the game, scoring 17 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals.
Senior Josh Sewell has established himself as the leading candidate for the Mr. Basketball award in the state of Kentucky. He has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass and Republic Bank Holiday Classic this season, becoming only the second player (Chris Lofton) to win both of the awards over the course of their playing careers.

Trinity’s Jan. 27, 2009 game at Doss and Jan. 30, 2009 game against St. Xavier in Freedom Hall were cancelled due to weather problems in the area. The cancellations allowed the Shamrocks to add a Jan. 31, 2009 game against Warren East at Bowling Green High School in the State Farm Shootout. It was not the first time that a game had been cancelled due to weather problems or other situations. Below is a listing of delays or cancellations during the Mike Szabo era.

• Feb. 12, 2008 and Feb. 13, 2008: Snow and ice delayed the play of Trinity’s meeting with Male in a seventh region showdown that saw the Shamrocks the end of an 18-game home winning streak. After falling behind 2-0, the Shamrocks showed promise early with an 8-2 run, capped by a Matt Chambless three-point field goal. The Bulldogs answered with an impressive 17-2 run to take a 23-12. Chambless’ 12 first half points, including nine in the second quarter, and a plethora of blocks by the Shamrocks allowed the Rocks to keep the game close at 29-21 at halftime. Trinity cut the lead to 31-28 before the Bulldogs closed the quarter on a 13-3 run to end the third period when Male took their largest lead at 44-31. The Shamrocks responded in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bulldog 16-4 to cut the lead to 48-47 in the final minute before costly turnovers and a questionable intentional foul call cost the Shamrocks a chance at the end as the Bulldogs escaped with a 52-47 win. • Jan. 29, 2008 and Feb. 6, 2008: Trinity and Doss completed a game that began on Jan. 29, 2008 and was halted due to a power outage in Steinhauser Gymnasium. A rare line of tornadoes recorded havoc in the Ohio Valley region as multiple deaths and massive damage occurred. The St. Matthews area was hit hard as many signs were knocked down and cars destroyed just a mile down the road from Trinity. When the lights went out, Alex Kupper was at the line to shoot two free throws with Trinity leading 32-17 with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter. Josh Sewell led the Shamrocks with 14 points while Kupper added seven points and six rebounds. Aaron Tierney was unavailable for the finish of the game after suffering an injury in a Feb. 5, 2008 game against Waggener.
• Dec. 27, 2004: A leak in the Lexington Catholic roof forced Trinity’s opening round game with Montgomery County in the Fifth Third Bank Classic to be moved to the school’s old gymnasium. The move was a positive one for the Shamrocks who pounded the previously unbeaten team from Montgomery County, 71-39. Kyle Saxton had 17 points while Jeremy Abell added 10. The Shamrocks hit 8-of-15 three-point field goals and had 21 assists on 29 field goals in the game.
• Dec. 13, 2003: Burnt popcorn led to a short delay in the second half of a game between Trinity and South Oldham at Oldham County. South Oldham jumped to a 17-9 lead before the Shamrocks scored 51 points in the final three periods, but came up short in a 63-60 decision. Blake Nix had 21 points and seven rebounds while Kyle Saxton had 15 points and seven rebounds.
• Feb. 19, 2003: After the early season meeting between Trinity and Moore was cancelled, the game was made-up on Feb. 19, 2003 at Moore. The Shamrocks made just 2-of-18 three-point field goal attempts and suffered a 49-42 setback.
