Thomas Varney was out of this world tonight.. but credit has to go to the whole team. Our defense stepped up in a big way!! I was a little worried in the first quarter, but the Pirates completely dominated from that point on.
Congrats Pirates.

So my girlfriend teaches at grayson High School here in Atlanta. Grayson is the #2 rteam in the State of Georgia and one of the best teams in the nation so I went to watch them take on their rival South Gwinnett tonight, despite badly wanting to listen to this game. I kept updating on my Blackberry and was shocked at how this turned out.
Belfry has clearly put themselves back into the 3A Title discussion. I said before the season started that this year's edition of Pirate football would take it's lumps but I could see them improving like the 2005 team who was an illegal procedure call from being the State Champs in my opinion. Tonight, it proves that the Belfry we have seenin Week 1 and 2 is simply metamorphasized into a tough, gritty team.
The Pirates make the 3 hour trip, take on a 5A Semi-Finalists who returned most of their team including a massive O-line, and play them after they had what many thought was a "wake-up" call against Bell. This is the same team who should have beat LexCath earlier this season. For Belfry to dominate like they did speaks volumes.
The key for Belfry now is to stay the course. Don't forget what is getting you where you are at, hard work in practice and the drive to improve. As nice as the wins over LCC and Whitley are, they don't mean anything. Coming up is Pikeville (your rival), Pike Central, and Sheldon Clark. Those three games mean much more than the past two weeks and if Belfry stops doing what they are doing, they will come away empty handed.
Bowling Green isn't so far fetched anymore. The Pirates now have two quality wins and their losses came to Pburg (possibly the 2nd best 2A team in the state) and Ashland ( a top 5 5A team who just beat Ironton) by a combined 9 points. If Belfry continues to improve like they have been, the sky is the limit!

congrats to belfry on a huge victory.....thomas varney sounds like an excellent player....is he better than ivan lee

Very impressive Belfry. I'm starting to think Whitley was a little over hyped this year. Not trying to take anything away from Belfry but no way should a young 2A team destroy a top 5A school coming into the season. None the less, Pirates made a big statement in this game. This team will be capable of making a run at a state title at this rate.

Alot of people may not realize it but Thomas was Belfry's leading rusher last year, not Ivan.

Pulled halfway through the 4th Quarter once the game was in hand as well as the other Belfry starters.
Unlike some HC's you won't see Haywood leave his star back in during a blowout to pad stats.
Keep in mind this was a 27-23 game in the 2nd Half and then Varney decided he wanted to put Whitley out of their misery.

It seems after a somewhat "slow" start, Belfry is beginning to come into their own. Coach Haywood always says his teams get better as the season goes on, and they're proving that point each week. Congrats Pirates on a very impressive win!

No offense Wildawg but Belfry is a 3A school and yes Whitley may be overrated but did you expect this??
09-19-2009, 12:25 AM
Well i picked this one wrong looks like the pirates have righted the ship at pond creek.

Heard he broke one of Doug Howard's records in the game?
and also heard Mr. Rich Brooks requested Thomas' address?

I picked belfry to win 20-13 but wow congrats to belfry i knew you guys would win!

This doesn't really surprise me. I knew after Bell handed it to Whitley that Whitley wasn't as good as we thought they may be. I don't know if they have some injuries or what, but I knew Belfry would win this one.
Congrats Pirates!
