Paintsville/JC consolidation
#1
Just wondering do you think this will happen in the near future ? I hear alot of talk around town that this could happen. If this did ever happen how good could/would they be ? Who would be the coaches of each sport ? Just wondering what you all thought about this ?
#2
This will never happen.

Why do you say this ?
#4
Just NOT happening.

I think alot of teams don't want this to happen just for the fact that they know they would be a powerhouse at every sport there is.
#6
Well, IF and that is a big IF. IMO, I still don't think that they would make it into one school. JC is too big as it is. I could see maybe going to an East/West or North/South and making them 2 or 3A schools. But, It aint happenin'!
#7
That's a good point.
#8
It almost became a reality in the mid 70's when the Paintsville school system was nearing bankruptcy, but the superintendent, school board and some prominent citizens were able to get the system back on it's feet. I for one hope that they never consolidate into one school.

Baseball POWERHOUSE... Although it ain't never gonna happen, the baseball program would be one of the best in the state year in year out.
#10
I agree, they would be a powerhouse in basketball, football, baseball, wrestling etc... I guess I would like to see it happen in a way due to how good they would be in everything.
#11
Never happen. I hope it never does. Great rivalry!
#12
Question:
If this were to happen, who would be the new schools biggest rivals?

Within the region, yes, outside of the region, no.

I never like seeing schools consolidate----you loose that "identity" thing----I went to a consolidated high school ---there was just not that feeling of school spirit that I feel in the community schools. Bigger ain't always better!

That's why you make two schools and create a new rival.

Wouldn't one large school make more sense academically???
A large school with more resources, more class offerings, and more consolidated administration makes more sense than two smallish schools.

While it would make more sense, I too believe a JC/Paintsville consolidation will NEVER happen.

I agree.
Also, Johnson Central and Paintsville combined wouldn't be too big. The new school would have about 1200-1300 students, about the same size as North Laurel, South Laurel, or Clay County.

Not goona happen! It would be like Hazard consolidating with Perry Central! To much alumni from Paintsville that will take care of this if it ever does come into talk just like at Hazard! ALOT OF MONEY PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT SPOTS! And I hope it doesn't happen just because of the rivalries!

Why make 2 schools when you already have two? If you add PHS students to JC's, we still wouldn't be too big. I like the idea of becoming a powerhouse with both schools combined, but my dad says PHS will never let it happen.Sad

I'd say your right but that's some of the talk I've been hearing. I disagree about them only being good in the region, they would compete every year with the big guys. Just imagine how many state titles would be here if this would have happened in the mid 80's til present. There has been an amazing amount of talent come through these two schools.
#21
Not sure if this will happen, it may in the future, but not for the next few years. Everyone on here is saying that there will be more talent and titles will flow into this area if these two schools combine, it could happen, there have been many great athletes come from these schools. Just remember, everyone believed the same would happen when Johnson Central was formed in the late 60s by combining such schools as Flat Gap, Oil Springs, Meade Memorial, and Van Lear. It didn't happen immediately, it took some time for the kids to get along and win some championships. Just keep that in mind!!!

Keeping a rivalry intact would play absolutely zero into this equation, and those that really think that it would are merely just fantacizing. I was around when it almost happened once....... The poster that mentioned that there were too many "money" alumni boosters around to ever let that happen really should face the facts on what it would cost to subsidize an independent school system year after year after year to keep it afloat. There comes a time when it all becomes senseless.

Not meaning to say that there has been the slightest bit of talk about a combination of the two, because I dont think that there has been any at all, but please keep in mind that a reciprocal agreement is helping the city school system, cash wise. If for some odd reason that agreement was not renewed , then financially I think the city school system would be hurt badly. Maybe they could withstand the blow, but I think in the long run over a period of time that a merger would just about have to happen.

I think that all involved with both school sytems have a very good working relationship with each other at the present time and I just cant imagine that anything would take place at this point and time. You have a few alums from both sides that might moan and groan , but cold hard reality, would be, well, cold hard reality.

Harrodsburg and Mercer County which were also rivals and did infact merge just this last year. So everybody, never say never.

Here's hoping that both school systems continue to remain healthy and work for the interest and benefits of the students.

I would love to sit back and see the fight over who's gonna be coaching the big 3, basketball, baseball and football.

It is an interesting process, I WILL TELL YOU THAT!
#28
Won't happen, but if it does, everyone should look out!
#29
I wouldnt want it to happen, and I agree with most of the reasons on here, too many students and plus it is one of the biggest rivalries in the state in basically every sport.

I can remember how this was a very very big thing when everyone in the city school system thought this was a given fact. The alumni from Paintsville will never ever let this happen again, trust me.
