I'm not surprised at all, in fact I kinda suspected it... He's assistant principle now and likely not long from retirement all together..
I wish him the best, he's a good guy, now the hunt is on.. I hope they take this choice seriously, it would really help out girls Vollyball ...
I know them ladies backs are killing them from carrying the entire athletic department :D

Who they calling first?

Shawn Hager is a football guy. Played quarterback at Belfry, coached along Jim Matney at Sheldon Clark. Took over for Matney when he took the Johnson Central job. Led the Cardinals to a 2009 Class 3A district 8 and regional 4 championship. Lost to Somerset in the state semis. He would later become an assistant at Prestonsburg and head coach of the baseball program. In 2017 he was named the head coach the new formed Floyd Central high school where he had 2 really good seasons.

I don’t think Shawn will ever get the credit he deserves. I had a friend that was a part time journalist for the Big Sandy News back when Hager was at SC and I was with him the night Hager agreed to call him after a game and give him an interview. He couldn’t have been more professional, respectful, and patient to a 19 year old that was nervous and trying to get his feet wet in journalism.

Shawn Hager knows football and he has given much of his life to the sport and has passed down this same passion to his son, Wesley Hager who now coaches at nearby Prestonsburg.

You can tell based off the social media comments that coach Shawn Hager is beloved by his players he coached at Sheldon Clark and Floyd Central.

Again, he’ll always have my respect for how he treated one of my best friends over a decade ago.

I’m hoping Wes can get his dad on staff at Prestonsburg. I’m sure coaching with your son would be sorta a dream come true. Hopefully that’s how it works out.

Whoever takes the job, will have an uphill battle. I don't see a lot of talent at the high school level, and the middle school struggled this past season. There are athletes walking the halls who should be playing, but that has always been the issue at Floyd Central when pertaining to football, It seems as if basketball has always been and always will be the top priority for the administration and the community. There is very little community support for the football program and all of the best athletes seem to play other sports, especially in high school. Hopefully, they can get a coach who can breath life back into the program.

Matthew Bottom is an intriguing name. Has some relatives and family out in the area. Long time MS Coach at Boyle County, current JV HC for the Rebels. Would think he could do a good job getting kids out.

That would be a big loss for the rebels. He does a great job with that program. They just won their jv conference as well.

Running an offense that is similar to Haddix's would also help with getting kids out and bring exciting times to the mountains. The more I think about it, the more I think it would be a homerun hire.

After seeing this name pop up I called some of my contacts at BC and have confirmed that Matt Bottom does not have any relatives or interest in Floyd Central. The comment was made that he is a true Rebel for life.

Floyd Central won’t go outside of Floyd County to make a hire. It will more than likely be someone from the current staff. Too political to make a decent hire.

Won the District last year finished 16-14. First District title since 2019, which was the year Hager took over for Kevin Spurlock, who resigned midseason. Floyd Central is 0-3 in 15th Region Tournament games in their history. They've won 3 District titles in their short history- 18, 19 and 24 seasons.

they've had a couple pretty good seasons the last two years but I think their overall record is something like 85-97, before the last two seasons they had about four in a row that were like 6-25,7-22, 7-15 then one like 13-15... The first season in 17-18 was a good one where they won district, they didn't have a winning season again until 22-23..

They have made some good progress the last two seasons though..

I’ve heard that Trevor Hoskins from Paintsville is the name to look at. I heard yesterday he already accepted a job at Floyd Central and the news came out this morning that Hager resigned. Hoskins Contract at Paintsville ran out 2 weeks ago.

If he can bring a couple guys with him it might not take to long to turn things around at Floyd Central. Without all the injuries Hagers record would have been much better.

I talked to Matthew this morning after I saw this. He said he's not been approached yet, but if he was it was something he for sure would have to think about.

I do believe Trevor Hoskins will have interest in this job.

Known Shawn forever. Has always been good to me and our crew from Belfry.

Shawn did things his way and did them the right way. I hope he finds his way back to the Blackcat sidelines with Wes because I feel like there is a lot of success to be had there. Well deserved retirement for one of the good guys!

While you did in fact talk to him this morning and yesterday morning the Floyd Central job was never part of that conversation. I spoke with him this morning as well and he is in the 100% not leaving Boyle County camp. I have heard that PC head coach Travis Burns may be looking at going further east once his season at PC ends. The rumor is that he really wants to coach at a mountain school and PC just isn't exactly that for him.

I don’t see someone moving into Floyd County for this job. It’ll be a local hire either from within the district or 15th region itself.

Matt Bottoms would be a great hire. He does a very good job running a successful JV program at Boyle County. Runs a similar offense to Haddix. He does a great job of misdirection like Haddix and gets them to chase the cheese so to speak

No offense to my friends in the Southern part of Floyd County, but there are no jobs/industry to bring in families/players, Prestonsburg & Betsy Layne are on the rise and so many families with school-aged kids are leaving the area for better careers.

I wish the Floyd Central program well... but this position will probably be filled with somebody looking for their first head coaching job that can commute.

I talked to him directly. He seems genuinely intrigued at the challenge of building another program. What he’s done with the JV group at Boyle is impressive. I just hope he doesn’t take any kids with him if he goes.
