2023 Class 1A Talk
#31
Good lord. There’s one in every county boys. Some cry baby die hard hatin troller that is so but hurt over their own problems they gotta blame someone else. Tell you one thing about Raceland and Pikeville, neither one gripes about anyone having transfers. You play who is on your schedule. Whoever that may be has a roster approved by the KHSAA. Go have a snowflake nor’easter at Tacketts house if it’s that bad.

6. Newport Central Catholic- They return 2400 yards of offense abs quarterback with possibly the best arm in the class. The down fall he is gonna need players to step up. Defensively they return 4 of its top 7 in tackles from last season and a secondary that forced 5 INTs.

7. Sayre- They return over over 2800 yards of offense and return nearly everyone both offensively and Defensively. The secondary that returns also hauled in 13 INTs last season. They where a very young team so expect them to take the next step in 2023.

8. Louisville Holy Cross- They return over 2200 yards of offense in 2023 but will be breaking in a new quarterback but he will have solid talent around him to make it better. Defensively they return 9 starters with a secondary that returns 12 INTs.

9. Hazard- Life without Max Johnson begin in 2023. But they will be another Johnson on the team in Gavin Johnson. They return just over 1100 yards of offense. Defensively they return 6 starters and possibly in my opinion the best front 3 in Class 1A if healthy and a secondary with 4 INTs.

10. Paris- They return over 2800 yards offensively. They will return nearly everyone from last season. Defense brings back everyone and a strong secondary that brings back 13 INTs for 2023. They will need to pick up that signature win to prove to us they belong here.

The funny thing is that it’s the larger schools complaining about transfers.  Personally I’m glad we don’t play Greenup anymore because after winning 12 straight with most of those being a running clock it became a pointless game on the field that had no benefits outside of the gate.  I wish we could have kept Russell though and I’m sure they have their reasons for ending the series but I can almost guarantee they wouldn’t have dropped us if they had hammered us last year like they had done in the 3 years prior.  That’s my only real gripe about that series ending.  Overall though we’ve done a great job replacing those games and from a competitive standpoint we will be better off in the long run.

These two ought to hook up. That way you would have a real bird dog that lies, flies, and cries.

11. Williamsburg- 1400 yards returning but needs a new quarterback in 2023. Defense returns 8 starters.

12. Covington Holy Cross- New to 1A, but a team to follow closely because they return quite a bit of talent and 9 starters defensively.

13. Bethlehem- The least they’ve returned in sometime offensively. Will have a good playmaker at wide out just find the quarterback to get him the ball. Defensively returns 6 starters and 10 INTs.

14. Harlan- Brings a good core back including its quarterback and top rusher. Defense to return 7 starters.

15. Nicholas County- returns it’s top rusher and 5 of its top 7 in tackles last season. Over 2300 yards of offense.

Others who may climb up. Newport, Frankfort, Russellville, and Paintsville.

Paintsville may of hit rock bottom again.. hope I’m wrong but it doesn’t look good for them

Paintsville when through some rough times in the late 90’s I believe. They bounced back but I believe with JC building a new school with all new facilities it will get very tough for the Tiggers. It seems that parents love new things that shine…like schools and fields. Trust me I know haha. I believe once the new JC school is built Paintsvilles numbers will drop even more.

I hope they can get back to being a top team again.  Our rivalry from 2014-2020 made football very fun to watch with several memorable moments.  My favorite game from that stretch was the 2017 playoff game when Gunner Lewis had the pick 6 to put the game away and hearing the crickets on their sidelines.  That also ended a 5 game streak of Paintsville taking it to us.  It was a fun heated rivalry that I hated to see fizzle out in the last 2 years.

Paintsville lost their Prestonsburg pipeline.
