Another running clock game for Mayfield. Watch out for the onside kick.

Mayfield but either the are one heck of a team or they are playing in a weak area for football. Mayfield in another running clock game

I did my usual work on their schedules. This should shed some light. I used the same format as in years past. Metcalfe’s opponents have a combined record of 44-85. They have played 1 team that is still alive in the playoffs, in 1a Ky Country Day. If you look at the scoring I have used in the past for schedule, which is you get a minus whatever for any team you played in a lower class and a plus for teams you played in a higher class, such as a 2a playing a 6a would be a plus 5. In figuring that Metcalfe is a plus 1. Mayfield is a plus 15. None of Mayfield’s nondistrict oppenents were 2a or 1a. Metcalfe played 4 nondistrict games against a 1a team. Both are undefeated but, Mayfield appears to have played a tougher schedule. Mayfield has put up a running clock in all of those games except for 1. That 1 was against a 3a team that is still playing.

Sorry, I forgot to add, Mayfield’s opponents combined schedule is 51-84.

We are a long way from Kroger field, you say our playoff is weak. I say if we are fortunate enough to get there, our playoff run will be way tougher than beechwood who will play nobody

Gotta agree with what most have said on this one... Good ole game of size vs speed in this one.. Iv watched film from Metcalf an i dont see the athletes to stay on the field with Mayfield.. only thing that troubles me is the power running game an metcalf knowing how to use it.. if a team ever lines up with a big back an plays old school football with mayfield an clock control it could mean bad news an a long night for the cards.. iv seen several teams do this, and have success 3 an 4 yrds at a time driving the ball getting 1st downs. Then to only switch in a passing play or two an get intercepted or try to out run the cards around the corner to only get stopped, let the air out an change their momentum an from there it was just panic mode and cards dominate... I say this bc Metcalf has a pretty good size dude that gets the hand off... and in my eyes if they fed him the ball in power formation they could stand a chance to keep this close with near profection.... but i do not see this happening, Metcalf will get behind be forced to pass or commit turnovers unravel an Mayfield will see yet another running clock... I just hope we come outta this one healthy with next weeks LCA/O Cath game looming... Metcalf has some big boys an mayfield is mildly undersized... but mayfield is in this situation year in year out... either way our starters have to play 4qters in this game.... its going to play hell on us in 4th an 5th round bc our starters have only been playing 2qters all year...

Mayfield starters won’t play 4 quarters. They will be out in the third quarter for the JV.

The Hornets will be facing a tough run defense and their passing game won't threaten Mayfield at all. They can hit a slant on occasion and some screens, but it won't be very effective in this matchup. Key on the run and the Hornets probably won't score more than 1 TD unless some sort of turnover / special teams score. On the other side Mayfield's line will open holes and the speed will be too much, with an advantage on the edges as well. Metcalfe's secondary will have issues covering the Cardinal WRs.

Mayfield by about 50-60.

If the Cards spot Metcalfe 7, it’s still a running clock.

Metcalfe has had a great year, but it will end on Friday. If the Cardinals don't win by at least 21, I will be surprised.

I am saying they need to play ,100% 4 qters bc we need them to be ready to play 4qters in the next two rounds.... I 100% feel like this game could be a running clock .. but we need to keep starters in so when the time comes we actually have to play all 4qters we will be ready...

Looking at the voting, 3 or so people are outside their minds. There is absolutely no way in hades that Metcalfe wins this game.

I don’t disagree that the Cards starters need to play 4 quarters. However, it would be foolish to risk injury after the clock starts running just to make sure they can handle playing a full game.

The weak schedule will finally catch up to the Hornets. Just don't seen anyway the Hornets can compete in this one. They have had a terrific season and have a lot to be proud of. But, Mayfield is just too much in this one. I hope I'm wrong and Metcalfe can at least keep it close.

I'm not sure Metcalfe's schedule is weaker than Mayfield's schedule.

Metcalfe's opponents record is 35-64 (regular season)
Metcalfe has played 3 teams with a winning record. Two at 7-3 and one at 8-2
Metcalfe has played 3 teams that completed the regular season with winless records
Best win (IMO) is an overtime game against 1A 8-2 KCD 29-28

Mayfield's opponents record is 37-63 (regular season)
Mayfield has played 2 teams with a winning record. Both at 6-4.
Mayfield has played 2 teams that complete the regular season with winless records.
Best win (IMO) is against 3A 4-6 PT 16-14

Just looking at these stats I would say both schedules are pretty similar. Not sure how you think Metcalfe's schedule is weaker than Mayfield's schedule?
#21
Its highly probable that five of Mayfield's opponents (Graves Co, Hopkinsville, Tilghman, McCracken Co, & Madisonville) go undefeated against Metcalfe's schedule, so those numbers are a bit skewed. Scheduling will have no effect on this game though.

Metcalfe just doesn't match up with Mayfield and they probably wouldn't have gotten past Danville without the 2 onside kick recoveries. This isn't a knock on the Hornets or their accomplishments. Its high school football and the unfathomable happens on rare occasions. The Hornets will at least get to have that opportunity.

Not sure about highly probable but I get your point. Schedule's will have no impact on this game. Mayfield has a great program and will probably win this matchup but Mayfield's schedule is pretty weak too! I watched Owensboro put a running clock on Graves and OC beat Owensboro. I was not impressed with Graves Co. and McCracken only won 2 games. I just think it will be closer than most people think. Good luck to both teams!

No doubt, Mayfield's schedule was unusually weak. Graves, McCracken, Murray, and Caldwell were way down for their standards. Even Calloway is usually better than the horrid year they suffered through. Throw in district foes Ballard Mem and Fort Campbell and its woefully bad.

As for Graves and McCracken, the list of 1A and 2A teams on the Metcalfe schedule would be hard pressed to win against either. I'll give Campbellsville, Green Co, and KCD credit though as quality teams.

I believe the top 4 have a legitimate shot to win the 2A trophy. The OC win over Owensboro is impressive, as well as the near win they let slip away on the road at Union Co.

Yes the Owensboro game was no fluke. And yes they had the Union Co game won and let it slip away. They were up 10 with 3 minutes to go and failed to recover an onside kick. Could have beat a good Daviess Co game but had 8 turnovers and still in the game going into the 4th quarter. And they dominated a good 7-3 3A Elizabethtown team 43-9. Should be a good game at Steele Stadium on Friday night when a really good LCA team rolls into town.

How many of those opponents, including their best game, did Metcalfe play against 1a opponents. This while Mayfield was playing against 3a,4a,5a and 6a.

You're right 55! But sometimes a 1A or 2A might be better than a 3A, 4A, 5A or 6A. I get your point and that's why Mayfield's RPI is much higher. At the end of the day you have to play the game. I just pray both teams play their best, come out injury free and let the best team win. Good luck to both teams.

Metcalfe County's season should have ended last week. They are playing with bonus money now and that's going to run out Friday.

I'll agree with James on that one.
