Ashland played very aggressive from the opening whistle and Belfry was never in this game. Ashland is a very dangerous team right now that is playing as good as anyone in 3A.

At the beginning of the year when they played Raceland I didn’t think they would finish the season over .500. This team has grown up and improved tremendously. Coach Tackett has done a great job with his young team this season.

Belfry has scored 10 points the last 2 games at Putnam against the Tomcats. They definitely don’t want another trip here anytime soon.

I would have liked to seen Raceland play the late season version of Ashland. That would have been a lot closer than the opening season game.

I wouldn’t read too much into this. No doubt Ashland was impressive. However….Belfry just isn’t good. Honest Belfry fans will say this isn’t surprising. They are what they’re record indicates. Decent at home. TERRIBLE on the road. The Pirates were just mediocre. Nothing wrong with that this year. They’re going thru a rebuild. A lot of uncharacteristic play all season. The team didn’t mature…and really didn’t improve. All of this in what could arguably be one of the weakest districts in 3A this year. I knew Belfry was average at best ….and it took 4 2nd half turnovers for LC to beat them in Louisa. District was terribly weak. Congratulations Ashland and good luck next week.

Ashland played outstanding tonight but I don’t see anyone beating CAL in 3A. They are by far best in 3A. Ashland has shot at getting to Lexington but what they will meet there is a much better team.

Ashland wins the “most improved” award for the area. I, too, thought the Tomcats were average at best at the start of the season…and they still may be. Let’s be honest. This was the worst Belfry team I’ve ever seen. Unbelievably bad. It’s clear all the good players in that part of the state must be going to Pikeville.

Strader, Houston, and Jennings are going to be tough to deal with next season. These are the types of players who could have D-1 scholarships if they went across the river.

That would be farther than anyone could have ever expected out of this team.  I agree CAL is on a different level and will likely run through 3A but the turn around Ashland has had is very impressive.  At the beginning of the season I remember hearing people say this was going to be one of Ashland’s worst teams in a long time and here they are deep in the playoffs with a legit shot to make it to Kroger.

I don’t listen to a word you even say ASHLAND is the only team in this immediate area thats won a State Championship recently. Ashland is the Top Program in this area Basketball Football and Ironton. F Ironton and their turf field no one cares. They aren’t the premiere $&$&.

Jennings is the son of a former NFL player.  That in itself can help him get recognition regardless of what side of the river he plays on.

Wow!!!! Man I was bad wrong on this one!!! Hats off to Tomcats . This team may end up in finals!!!

Way to go Tomcats!

We will see.  I’m no Ironton supporter but I call it like I see it.  The coach over there is clearly the real deal and is connecting kids with big time schools better than anyone in the area perhaps ever has.

I hope Ashland, Raceland, and Ironton win state titles this year.  It’s good for the area.

We agree there.  Boyd sucks at football.  Ironton doesn’t, though.  As far as turf fields in the area go, I prefer Raceland’s as I think it looks the nicest.

Time for haywood to retire?

I know everyone likes to show the utmost respect to coaches like Haywood, but watching this Belfry team did remind me of some of Ivan McGlone’s last teams at Russell after he had lost his mojo.

No doubt Pendleton is the best in the tristate for getting kids to big time schools.  My point was Jennings has a dad that has those same types of connections that other kids don’t have access to unless it comes from a coach like Pendleton.  I hope that group from Ashland stays together.  In 2 years they will be just as good as the 2020 state championship team.

Glad it looks good as I agree as far as Ashland taking a back seat to anyone will never happen. Ashland is everyone’s rival in entire tri-state. No one is sending kids to Ironton F-N Ohio to get a scholarship.

FYI…..Haywood just won his 8th state championship last season.     He’s not lost his mojo….he just didn’t have a good team this year.  Tough schedule.  Couple devastating injuries…and a….freshman QB.Belfry isn’t done folks.   Just give them a little time.

I’ve got to say, Dicky…it’s good to finally correspond with you on here.  I’ve been a fan of your work for years but have never gotten to actually meet you.  You’re the best, sir.

I like you 16 and agree with you on a lot of things but this post should've stayed in your head. No need to go across the river for anything. Ashland is a legitimate contender the next two years so there will be plenty of noise right where they're at....

All the Ashland Haters and that’s a long list, they still own Belfry and will be a force to be recon with in 3A or 4 A.
