I like what Russell is doing with there none district schedule. They are in the same position as Raceland. Both teams district opponents are usually so weak you have to play a tough none district schedule

Russell starts on offense this year with a solid RB in Richardson-Crews, the return of Ethan Oborne in the backfield, the best receiver in the area in Carson Patrick, and the best kicker in the area in Totten. The line will need some work and the QB will need to be replaced, but at least they have some proven players to start with.

The defensive side of the ball would be a concern, though, as 8 of their top 10 tacklers are gone, 7 by graduation and 1 by transfer, and the 2 returners are in the secondary. They're going to need a lot of new names to show up on this side of the ball in order to compete this season.

The coaching staff has several defensive specialists on it, but this may be the least proven bunch of players to start with on defense, though, that they've ever dealt with.

Last year/ this year toughest schedule I’ve seen them have in 20 years, Boone county, Raceland, wheelersburg, Dunbar and Lawrence all are pretty good. No breathers on that schedule. Should be a top 5 3A team this year but could very easily be 2-4 or 3-3 heading into the district games. They have 3 excellent backs with Crews, oborne, and the emergence of Rock last year. Line is very talented the issue there is depth, if they jell the Red Devils will be very good. As 16thregioner said they have a weapon at kicker in Totten and one of the best players in 3a in Carson Patrick

Colby Rock really impressed me last season. I think he only weighed like 145 ponds or so. He ran hard last season. Hopefully he comes back even stronger.

Russell returns a good group to build around. Patrick is the best returning reciever in the area. Question will be, who is throwing him the ball and who can make stops defensively. They lose a ton on that side of the ball.

Ethan Pack may get the nod at qb unless someone beats him out.

After seeing Russell in the Boyd 7-on-7, I think this will be a really decent Russell team. Patrick is the best receiver in the area. They can just throw it up and he will go get it. Their line looks strong as well. I expect their running game of Oborne and Richardson-Crews to be their foundation. Combine that with the best defensive coaching in the area and I think the Devils will be very competitive.

That being said, their schedule doesn't do them any favors. Boone County returns all their main players and visits week 1 looking to avenge last season's loss to Russell. Raceland returns their entire team with additions. Russell visits the new Ram turf in week 2 as the Rams will be looking to avenge their bad loss to Russell last year. Wheelersburg comes to Russell for week 3. Enough said. Russell visits Montgomery in week 5, another team who returns everyone and will be looking to avenge last season's loss. Dunbar visits in week 6. Russell goes to West Carter in week 10.

The lightest part of the schedule is the district games, of which East Carter and Ashland will still not be gimmes. Even though this Russell team isn't a bad team, they could end up 5-5. Depth will be an issue as the season rolls on with lots of players having to play both ways. We will see how they do with the wear and tear of the tough schedule.

I can't think of many years where Russell doesn't have a lot of players playing both offense and defense.
