13th region does, 14th some times, 12th never, 5th does.

So let’s look at it. Let’s say we do both games together. Tip jv at 6. We drive an hour there and get there at least an hour before game (most regions are mandatory). So we leave at 4 get there at 5. We are 2 hours in already. Jv starts at 6 varsity at 7:30. That’s 1.5 hours. Varsity ends around 9. Now we are at 5 hours. Drive home 1 hour. No food due to tired and just want to get home. So 6 hours minimum. Doing both games on average around 110. 18.34 an hour not bad right? Would you take the job for 18.34 today? If so I’ll send you the link because I’m not doing it.

My point is this we do have some that cheat BUT most don’t. Do they miss calls absolutely. I coached for years and I would get tore up over calls. I have even handed refs rule books. Until one day I seen a young official trying his best. I heard all the fans giving him down the road. He looked at me and said coach I may have missed that one. I couldn’t get in position fast enough. I just looked at him and said son you are doing a great job. Hang in there. Now this young man is calling lower level college ball. Very proud of him and glad we stay in touch. Have a great day everyone and keep in mind THEY ARE HUMANS. This young man goes to two camps and works with younger officials every year. I have coached as well and even got tossed twice in 8 years but I hardly ever say anything at a game I may throw my hands a few times in dismay but thats about it. getting older and listening to how stupid some in the stands are has really helped me over the years. you aint gonna get a call changed anyway so just move on to next play like I tell my kids

15th region refs get 40 for jv 70 for varsity. Coaches get 3 scratches I believe. Refs on the other hand can’t scrath any team that I’ve been told. You can however decline a game that you are given on arbitier

According to the KHSAA the referee numbers are all over the place and fluctuate each year... It's just like any other job, there's a lot of turnover. :Thumbs:

It was SO LONG ago, that in order to get licensed I had to get both basketball and football accreditation simultaneously!! And I only did it to help out our little league. We wanted to use licensed officials but couldn't afford it at the time. Again, this was years ago.

It has been my experience that the schools don't withhold taxes and don't send 1099's to officials. So the pay is "tax free" and thus, it's worth even more than the $20 an our including driving. More like $25 an hour when you factor in that it's straight cash homie.

I used to love the 16th. It was old school. No blood no foul and that was as a player in the early 80's. As a player we didn't want the fouls called.

saying that I can not dispute that officials need constant training so that they get better. What would be nice would be if all games were on video. Then each game the officials and the coaches would watch the video in there own comforts and grade it.

It would also be nice if the KHSAA scheduled the same officials for any summer league ball. Give constant training to the officials and also give a pay increase to those that have those reputations.

If you make over a certain amount at a school system through the year they are required to send you a 10-99 for tax purposes. All assignments are made through arbiter and they keep a record also. Would be easy to check by IRS. Officials do claim that money as self employment and have to pay taxes on it at a later date.

To the poster about wishing every game was on video. It is! We as officials would love to get every game we call. But coaches don’t want to be so good with releasing films to officials. We have some coaches who will and some who won’t.

To the poster about shortages being real, the 16th has nearly 100 officials. We are blessed with having Morehead state and draw a lot of young people from There. The downside is these don’t progress through the system at a high rate. Move back home ect, We cover all middle school, freshman, jv, varsity at 16 schools.

On 2/2 there was 11 varsity games in our region (33 officials) 11 jv games (22 officials), seven freshman (14 officials) and our middle school conference tourneys. 16 games. (At least 16 more officials). That’s 85 refs needed to call. Take in account some veterans do college, others have day blocked for family reason and can’t call. So yes there is a shortage of officials. Out of the 100 only about 30-35 are guys who call varsity based on experience and level

That is wrong info and illegal. You have to claim all income on your taxes and the schools do send 1099's, trust me I have 8 of them laying on my table. :HitWall: So it's much less than whatever number someone put up per hour.

It has been my experience that you only get a 1099 if you make $600 or more from a school... That's the IRS reg.

Far from the truth. Ask any official that makes more than 599 from any given school. You get 1099’s.

I actually did that when my kids were in middle school. What a surprise!!!

Video supported the refs wayyy more than not!!!

Case in point tonight. Not saying South would win, but the officiating was horrendous. Short black ref was decent, other two refs were 11th region homers. No wonder the Richmond cops make sure those guys get off the court safely
